In January 1982 I went through this White Sands, New Mexico Checkpoint for the first time and an Agent instructed you have to say "I'm a U.S. Citizen, not an American" and when I told my mother about the Stop, she said the same; in 2024 I've proven it's possible to earn a living doing neither. Absolutely brilliant, these border patrol agents made themselves look absolutely ridiculous on camera and social media, and Robert didn't need to say and do anything, he just waited patiently in his vehicle until he was given permission to go and continue on with his journey. Reminiscing about the first time I ever went through an Inland U.S. Border Patrol Checkpoint in January 1982 and when returning home on Holloman Air Force Base, I asked my mother about it, when she confidently recited, "Oh yeah, you have to tell them you're a United States Citizen, not and American" The following year when I was stationed at the base I recall everyone's anticipation as the town waited for it's first McDonald's and how we'd plan trips from the base to Alamogordo to eat there. It was surprising to learn Alamogordo has 2 McDonald's now and sadly the original McDonald's closed earlier in the day.
