Totally agree Tom. If your watching this video, your an enthusiast to some degree and owning a convertible at least once is a must no matter where you live. Just as an FYI, I own an AMG C43 Cabriolet, which is also in this BMW's price range, but also comes with heated seats, neck warmers, 4 seats and 4 wheel drive. I drive it in the dead of winter with snow tires and you'd never guess it's a drop-top. So no more excuses, you owe it to yourself to try the open air experience at a touch of a button.

I purchased an X3 M40i in June and was told that Apple Car Play is $80.00 annually after the first year or $300.00 for 20 years. I don’t know if that 20 year subscription can be carried over to the next BMW. I’m not a fan of Apple Car Play. It doesn’t interface well with the BMW Navigation system. Far too many screens to go through to be able to use Apple Car Play for music playlists, Podcasts and audio books and iDrive for navigation. You’re probably asking yourself why not just use the BMW iDrive interface. Great question. The answer is I’m not able to access my playlists, Podcasts or audio books using iDrive. When I purchased the car in June I was told by the BMW Genius that these issues would be fixed soon. I’m still waiting. Other than that complaint I’m very happy with this SAV. You’re the best Tom. I’ve always subscribed and look for your reviews every Tuesday morning.

Could be because the Z4 you tested has iDrive 7. My car has iDrive 6.

2004 z4 3.0...absolutely love it for those interested in a more aggressive exhaust note(s)...check out the exhaust cutouts on amazon. The one I have offers 4 different sound levels (ranging from stock quiet to a symphony coming from the inline 6) and is installed behind the catalytic converter so it only affects the sound, not the emissions. It really adds to the driving experience. Also, I wouldn't trade my manual transmission for all the paddle shifters in the world...😊

Well that's because you cant drive on a track. If you track it like me and want to push the car to the MAX in corners or the straights, a manual slows you down. You Americans grew up with nascar and fast and furious. Those aren't motorsports. In Europe we have formula 1 ans they had paddles since the late 90s because it's faster and keeps you more focused so you take corners faster. Anyway I sadly live in awful America now and constantly have to hear drag strip Queens or straight line warriors or people who don't know how to properly drive or have never been on a track once and if they have get awful lap times, tell me constantly how "manuals are better". Manuals are good on sub 300hp rwd cars in canyon roads where you want to just have a "fun" experience in corners, and on tracks, are useless now especially with higher power cars

A gorgeous vehicle. And a 0-60 time under six seconds is easily enough for the "ultimate tanning machine." If acceleration and quarter mile times are high priorities any roadster is a lousy choice compared to other options. If it were my money, however, I think I'd opt for two Miatas (with a volume discount). At least then I could seat four passengers. :)

I'm looking to switch from my SLK R172 350 (love it but time to try something new and looking for a more drivers roadster this time) but stuck between the 718 Boxter and the 2019 Z4. The 718 is probably on top of the list but the Z4 is almost neck to neck. Tough call...

I like the new Z4 but the Boxster is just better. Of course it should be for $9k more but unless you've only got exactly 50g's to spend, just go all the way.

Have you any experience taking a convertible for machine wash? I've had my Audi A3 Cabriolet for 5 years and last week was the first time I took it for an auto car wash because I no longer have access to water and hose like before. It was a machine with cotton cloth-like cleansers rather than a big bristle roll, so the overall feeling was that it was quite gentle. I didn't find any leakage or damage so I have decided this is the way to go, saving valuable time and effort. What do you think of car wash for convertibles?

I would love to give convertables a try. But I refuse to buy a car where I can't lean the seat back and get comforatable on a long road trip. (Or a car with no legroom, or a steering wheel that doesn't telescope out far enough - and yes, I'm 6'-4" - so this is a tall man's issue....)

I'd say the Supra is about 90% Z4 coupe so there is both this gen. So Z4 M40i or new mid-engine Corvette for almost the same or less money.....

This is just untrue. The M40i, which is the one with the same engine as the supra, costs $63k to start. The Supra starts at $50k. If you really wanted to compare the base level Z4, I guess that does start at $300 less than the Supra, though I wouldn’t compare the four-pot Z4 to the I6 Supra. One is clearly a better drive than the other for $50k and options. I’d still buy the BMW, but I wouldn’t do it because it’s cheaper, I’d do it because I want the soft top.

To my eyes the previous generation looked more beautiful and feminine inside and out. This one can look like so many other vehicles, not bad looking but not as beautiful as that prior version even if it drives better.
