What sold Wildstar to me was it's movement. It was so, so unbelievably "right" - running, jumping, hoverboards, you name it. I'm still waiting for some private servers to pop up, but it's definitely a gargantuan task, especially considering that it does need further improvement.

It fell into the WoW Wannabe trap where the endgame was the same as WoW. The other thing that the game was really demanding at the time even compared to WoW. Had to really tweak the settings down to get a descent frame rate.

Rift was mismanaged, and that eventually caused its downfall. While there is still an active player base, it could of been so much more. Tera imho, still to this day, has/had the best action combat of any mmo.

Ya I liked rift when it came out, got into the beta and it was pretty smooth, and what impressed me the most was I fell through the world (common issue with mmorpgs back then) and instead of dying it teleported me back to the ground. But like most games back then I couldn't get my friends to leave WOW to try it out and gave up after a month.

I feel the deal with Wildstar was that it marketed itself as this fun goofy, spontaneous MMO that had a lot of checklist features! Professions that had depth, side careers that encouraged your playstyle, jumping puzzles, lore pieces, lots of small hidden areas to explore, a movement system that encouraged platforming, etc. etc. Though when it came to the endgame was lacking, in fact there wasn't much endgame at all! they were still working on it at the time. When it finally did get a sizeable endgame however it was a grindy and tedious for no other reason then to service the "Veteran" MMO player, one who liked "Hardcore" raiding or PvP. A contradiction to all the PR saying it was built from the ground up to let you play how you like! Getting gear took a while and even after that you still had to socket it with mods and enhance it for it to be useful. On top of its telegraphs which felt bulky and hindering visually in a wide raid setting because you could see your team mates (I think there was a way to turn down the amount of it, but i cannot recall.) By that time it had lost almost all of it's players. it tried to entice them back with a system similar to a catch up mechanic to get people ready for Redmoon Terror. Yet again, too little too late. It couldn't really find it's niche , it was having long spells without content, and NCSoft was not happy with the failure to meet expectation. So the plug was pulled. Visually still one of the best MMO's We've ever gotten. i followed its development like a hawk, i played it's betas, i even found a box copy of it and played before it went free to play! and a little later down the road i played a dps Medic in the raid tiers that were out and i was barely scraping by to access the first few tiers, and the newest raid was coming out at the time, that being Redmoon Terror. I want them to use the IP for smaller single player or co-op action games. it's a very in depth world that far surpassed that Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic.

Imho not only visually was it superb, but the gameplay was snappy & responsive, the class fantasy was S tier, right up there with WoW, & the ability to tailor your gameplay, abilities, & quests around combat, lore finding, exploration, or base-building via their "path" system was genius & still to this day not replicated in any other MMO. Wildstar had true GOAT potential, but like you said it fumbled the bag with the endgame.

Really hope Nixxiom plays a bit more GW2 to see just how massive those events can be. The sheer coordination between players in that game isn't something you see in a normal MMO. For example: Triple Trouble. You need *THREE* full raid groups, spread to 3 points in a zone. All 3 raids need to coordinate with each other to kill 3 separate heads of a world boss (yes, this is a world boss. Something that's just a DPS rush in most MMOs) at the same time. Keep in mind, these are pugs. It blew my mind, the first time I saw this and when it finally clicked with me what was going on. It's been my main MMO, ever since. Absolute best open world content in the genre, and I'll die on this hill.

6:33 quick note on DDO alot of quests are locked behind a paywall but twice a year, (and last month was the most recent) they release a code that unlocks ALL quests for free, forever so even if u dont intend to play now, if u see this code, make an account ,redeem it, and in the future if u ever play. u got em. now, recent one just ended, but theres still alot of f2p quests to play. and the unlock all for free coupon will be coming around october or november again. add to that. there is a hardcore server league that happens every 3 months or so that is....well..hardcore, perma death. win major prizes. if u die and u want to keep character, u can xfer them to any non hardcore server!

BDO being p2w is a big misconception. Clearly, Nixxiom's not actually played it. Shame that people just regurgitate reddit opinions about the game because its far from p2w, especially with the changes to the game over the past 4 years. It's extremely new player friendly and not only is the "p2w" not really even worth it, but pretty much all of the PvP content is gear capped at extremely low gear requirements so p2w is actually impossible in those game modes. Another mmo I enjoy, Dungeons & Dragons Online, is way more p2w to a disgusting level.

Wildstar tried to appeal to the old school raiding scene with 40 man raids, and then only added a single new raid after the initial release. Also, they had capacity issues at launch, in addition to DDoS attacks, so they opened up a ton of extra _realms_ instead of extra _servers_ for those realms, which fragmented the playerbase and led a lot of people to quit early

Wildstar is my favorite video game of all time. Loved the art style, the world, the story, the humor, the music, the combat, the raids and dungeons, the phenomenal housing. Warhammer online was such a bizarre game. I, to do this day loved the first PvP map where it was a C shaped map and at certain points a nuke would go off and kill everyone, so you had to hide in the centre cave but as all the other players were there sometimes you just got pushed into the nuke. It was so much fun to play and then you hit lvl 10 and were forced to play a boring map...and then I quit, to go from 10/10 memorable experience to 0/10, can't even remember a single thing about it.

The slip up mentioning Star Trek made me wish you put STO on here. It's one I wish I could put in the fun category but the pay to win ships, rough gound combat and low server populations make it not as fun as I wish. I largely agree with the list, though I can't say I have very much fun with DDO. Coming into it from games like LOTRO and SWTOR, it's progression was really hard to adjust to, the combat (at least for non-magic classes, I can't speak to casters) felt a bit boring at the point I got to, which I will grant was not very far at all, and the heavy instancing of the world along with more emphasis on dungeons (which, given the title, honestly fair enough), I really struggle to get into the game every time I try to get back into it. Ultimately, it seems to be an acquired taste mmo, but if you can acquire that taste before leaving, I think you will absolutely love it. Similarly, with LOTRO, while it is easily my favorite mmo of all time, I can see why some people might not enjoy it. The pacing of the game is much slower than just about any other modern mmo. In the time you can get to cap in WoW, you will maybe be getting to about level 40 out of 140 and not even being out of the base game yet. Still, I think the game is well served by the slower pace, especially if you are going into the game wanting to be immersed; the game feels like it lets you get into the many stories you can experience in the world and even immersing you into each zone rather than how most other games will try to shuttle you from one zone to the next as quick as possible.

Wildstar had massive amounts of endgame, but it was all extremely difficult with it's 40 man raids where everyone had to do mechanics correctly, tons of gating thanks to attunements. Max level left nothing for the average player. And there the player base wasn't big enough to attract the sweaty try hards the end game required.

Ive played my fair share of MMOS over the years. My friend absolutely adored BDO for a while (basically until genshin came out), and no matter how many times i tried to get into it with him, i could never get over the fact that the game is just 100% mindless grinding and occasionally bosses. Basically no really engaging story or lore going on, no cinematic dungeons of any sort. Just go kill thousands upon thousands of this one mob group and hope for either enough exp to level up or to get a enough of a rare drop to participate in the gold sink that is upgrading items.

They're reworking the main quest story and they're already adding more cutscenes than their current playerbase would enjoy watching. 7:50 Dude, WildStar was the best. I did play it a ton, but I do remember a lot of WoW content released in tandem with WildStar updates, which didn't help for WS's engagement. Raids and dungeons had no "easier" modes and they were balls hard at the launch, which probably turned off a lot of players. Progression and stats were also not intuitive. I've said before, if WS had given players stats like Strength instead of 'Moxie', the game would have been much better received and had people playing more. There was a STEEP learning curve in that game, and it was hard to see the payoff. On the lore side, I think they resolved the big "Mystery of Nexus" far too early and then lore/PvE players just grew disinterested with the story after that. There was also not much in the way of story for the Empi- err, the Dominion vs. Rebels side of the plot. PvP was fun, but it was an unbalanced mess. I remember slogging through BGs on my warrior that I had looked up all the guides for and statted perfectly and getting beat to death meanwhile just pressing whatever I felt like on my Spellslinger and nuking half the enemy team. All-in-all, this game is at the top of my wishlist of MMOs I'd like to see come back. If they tweaked some stuff, balanced others, and reworked some of the story, it could be a much better game. Oh - and they need to go easier on the collection aspect of the game this time as well. The sheer number of pets, mounts, toys, AND housing props was quite overwhelming for a game in the launch expansion.

What about new world, also nixxiom would you be hyped if they made a viking/old norse inspired mmorpg?

Hmm. Maybe? The groundwork is all there, so I don't see why a Viking themed MMO wouldn't be possible. Would be a neat idea!

Imho the best MMOs ever made (other than WoW) were Warhammer: Age of Reckoning & Wildstar. I was very sad when those games went under -- I completely left WoW for both of them.

Albion (mobile or pc) good fun. It’s more of a traditional sandbox mmo though. So storyline is kind non existent. But the pvp/pve is solid. My wife and I have been playing that for about a month. Decent if you haven’t checked it out. Oh it is F2P but a premium membership does move things along a bit faster as well as a host of other things. Memebership is not needed though.

The big reason why WildStar failed for most of their playerbase was.. well quite too hard content, especially raids. If i mean hard, i mean mythic raid level in WoW and even above. The devs catered more and more to that audience. Same as weve seen in WoW for quite some time.

I wanted to like Wildstar but the player character models sucked imo. The textures were sooooo low fidelity. Your character doesn't even have nails. Why play a game where characters in a old game like Classic WoW look better. I have this problem with most newer MMOs too, something about the characters doesn't look right.
