Brilliant, Kath. Some great ideas in there, as usual, which I'll start with Rocky. Thanks so much for making and sharing these vids. Your relationship with your dogs is something for us all to aspire to :-). Sian.

I am already using a couple of your ideas and will definitely use the ones new to me. They are making our walks fun and developing a happy dog with consistent recall. I share my life with a 2 year old cocker spaniel and typical to the breed she loves to go exploring and "hunting" out interesting smells.

Great variety of ideas for training and exercise off leash. It's such a pleasure to see the fun and willingness of all concerned (human and canine). I think a lot of work/training and bonding has happened, to make these exercises look so much fun. Thanks for posting. :)

than ks for response Kath. Makes sense. I remember a friend used Cheezels but I was no willing to use them as I won't eat these myself -but my sons LOVED them so I would imagine the boys (dogs) would too.

Thankyou. the treats i feed my dog are part of their daily diet, instead of getting one meal a day in a bowl my dogs work for their food. as dogs developed as scavenger by our campsites years ago, it is more natural & stimulating for a dog to work for it! I also incorporate toy play or just praise, i use food when learning something new to help the dog understand better the behaviour required. working in this way builds up an immense trust in the dog with you and an incredible bond.

Thats great and thankyou for your comment. i started off in the home working one and rewarding the others for waiting on the settee or their dog beds as i was working that one. Initially i may tie one up to help prevent it from learning to come when the other is working, but in the initial stages always reward the waiting one nearly every time you reward the one you are working to help it lean and then phase it out to just at the end. good luck and enjoy x

Hi Thankyou. The treats i used were pieces of yellow cheese so that they stood out. If you look for the video on scavenger games on my site..you will see how i condition them to a hand signal to help them with direction and knowing that something has been thrown, then they use their scent. Also if you find a field might be a prob then try it on a concrete or tarmac type surface where things can be more easily visable. hope this helps x

Hi Kath, thank you for sharing your teaching skills and outcomes. Could you tell me what treats you use for throwing size colour etc as my dogs would not see them in a field. They are not working dogs so sight is not as sharp as your dogs would be.

Great video! I'm impressed with your creativity. However, I realised that you often throw treats on the ground for your dogs. I have a question on that. Is it ok that my dog does not see the treat and was searching around for treat?
@fiocified
@fiocified 14 жыл бұрын
Amazing -I'm going to try all of these! But how did you teach your dogs to go TO then AROUND the cattle feeder? You didn't throw a treat out there, so I presume they're responding to your different body/hand signals, right? I'd love to learn how to do this :)

How do you play the games so that your dog is still clear on when to sit in front of you or when they can run around you when you call them? Since you're using "come" for both, don't they get confused about what is expected? I am new to your videos, and they are wonderful!

3-19 Still trying to get a reliable recall, so far I can start with Loki by my side and toss a treat to my left and when he returns I toss another treat to the right. So far so good. I'll continue this way for a week or so and they try to have him touch my open hand before tossing the next treat. Can't wait until he no longer needs to be on a rope.

@EnglishSaint1 Hi thanks. sorry havent got back to you before as i had a lot of personal grief. Dont forget to reward regularly to get the behaviour well learnt, many people dont use rewards enough! Have you got a friend you could walk with and have play sessions with so that you could practice, recalling and sending away to play? I do a lot of work starting at home where i let them play and then ask them to stop or recall, reward and send them away to play again.

This is great...What do you think about feeding your dogs treats? does it make them only want the treats? Or do they still come because they love you
@KathCharlton
@KathCharlton 14 жыл бұрын
@Parenchym Thankyou..they are conditioned to wait calmly as puppies when they first come into my house. The pup is trained first then restrained by a lead on its bed while i work the others in turn. While i am working the others i am also regularly rewarding the puppy for staying on its bed. Now as soon as i start working a dog in the field the others just drop and wait without been asked, each will have a turn and each will be rewarded for waiting.

Hi very impressed with your video. I need some advice on my 9 month dog. He’s excellent at recall, expect when he see’s another dog, then he’s OFF to play! When he’s on the lead and see’s a dog he’ll sit, lay down, stare and refuse to move dying to go off and play. I cant seem to break his focus, I’ve tried squeaky toys, food, running the opposite way calling him and nothing seems to work. Any help or tips would be greatly appreciated.

@MyaandKoda Hi if you check out the rest of my vids..i have one on 'Hand targeting' i recommend this as one to get your dog started with...as it can work very well as a visual that they just think oh i know what you want now. Then there are the 'Attentiveness to you' series of vids...i REALLY recommend you watch these, as they explain all about how to get focus and how they learn their names. I also never skimp on rewards and especially not when they are just learning behaviours.. gd luck...

@newbear95 Hi if your dog is not used to treats been thrown for it, then start with something highly visable like cubes of cheese or chicken. Try the games at home first where they will be more noticable on the carpet..then once your dog understands progress this to outside. If your dog does not see the treat then let it search for it and recall as soon as you notice yr dog eating it. Set your dog up for success at all times:) hope this helps.

@Ahmenti If your dog has got a strong scavenger instinct then this should help stimulate and channel this instinct into a more acceptable form. If scavenging is put on cue and the dog is allowed to scavenge at acceptable times their desire to scavenge at other times should reduce. I would also teach a good 'leave it cue, to help with this learning. check out my scavenger hunt recall games vid another way to help stimulate and focus your dog:)

hi , like what you are doing with your dogs but I have the same problem with my 2 year old black lab as English saint1 does with his dog . my dog will come to me on a recall if no other dogs are about but if we come across other dogs then he is pulling me like mad on the lead or if he is off the lead then he will run to the dogs at full speed and will start playing with them or jumping up at the owners . I have tried to get he back with treats but he will not come to me at all , so when I am in a park with my dog I tend not to let him off the lead . any advice !!!!!!!!
