Fun & simple - APRS via ISS 🛰️🌎 using a handheld radio and whip antenna

Using APRS with the International Space Station (ISS) digipeater is fun and simple. All you need is an APRS-capable handheld radio and whip antenna. In this video I'll demonstrate sending and receiving APRS packets via ISS using my Kenwood TH-D74 HT and a Diamond RH77CA whip antenna. Your radio only needs two settings adjusted - frequency of 145.825 MHz and digipath (pathname) of ARISS. I used the GoSatWatch iOS app for tracking the ISS. Have you been wanting to try APRS and there's no digipeater nearby? Just wait until the ISS goes overhead and work the ISS, it's fun & simple. For your contact to show up on the internet it needs to be digipeated down do a ground station with a s-gate that is monitoring that frequency, or will any I-gate do the trick ? Or does the ISS upload all contacts to the internet via a different method ? Thanks !

@@DangleBerriesPL the first statement is correct. Has to be received by a ground station that’s an igate. There’s several very dependable ones. Check out ariss.net

I have been an Amateur Radio Operator for 70 years. It started dying when the " no code " Technician Class license was put into the making. It has done nothing but go down hill since then.

I disagree wholeheartedly. I’ve been a ham for a little over 20 years. Like you, I had to learn CW to earn my upgrades before the requirement was removed. As best I can tell, the hobby is doing just fine with room enough for experimentation and exploration for everyone. Not sure what this has to do with working the international space station, which is 100% RF (no Internet).

There is a heck of a lot more to amateur radio than working CW on HF, way more. CW is a fun thing to do for some people, like camping or riding a horse. But, for all practical purposes, the world has moved on from CW.
