Fun Watercolor Technique Plastic Wrap (cling film) Hydrangea Painting

FUN WATERCOLOR TECHNIQUE PLASTIC WRAP | HYDRANGEA PAINTING
I wanted to share a fun watercolor technique with you today. It’s a bit unusual for me because I usually just use the paint and because it uses a kitchen supply you probably already have - cling film (plastic wrap).
When I paint flowers (or anything for that matter) I go for a loose expressive style rather than a realistic botanical sort of approach. But one of the things I really like about hydrangeas is their composite blooms and that is not something I really focus on in my usual loose style. Today I want to use a bit of negative painting to bring out some of the tiny individual flowers in the composite blossom. To give me a bit of a head start I am going to use cling film (or plastic wrap) in a first layer.
It requires juicy paint and considerably patience to let that first layer dry under the scrunched cling film. Once that layer is dry the effect is a variety of random shapes that I can build on to create a little more of the detail in the flower with negative painting.

Your hydrangea painting is spectacular, Kerrie! Your plastic wrap technique is wonderful and gives that feeling of a composite flower as you add in your details, and leave those lost and found edges where the eye can complete the missing bits. I agree it draws you in where your mind can complete the image. I am intrigued to give this plastic wrap technique a go with watercolors. Wonderful Thankyou. Sepia produces lots of beautiful rocks under water; good for walls and castles. Mix lamp black with Prussian blue in equal parts. Try it

I have to add a second comment. Watched it a few times. EXCELLENT. Beautifully explained. Always thought it was very complicated but you’ve broken it down into easy steps. Yes, I do use clingfilm. A little trickey to handle. Like it for large blooms like Hydrangeas and foliage. Still learning how to manipulate it. Learnt though that the paint underneath needs to be juicy since the clingfilm lifts quite abit off. Thanks for a great tutorial.

It's called pareidolia, when you start to see images within random pattern or texture. My own art uses this psychological perception phenomena... I mainly do faces and charater montages.
