"United We Stand Strong" was stamped on the coins of the Kingdom of Bulgaria after 1878, after the liberation from the Ottoman Empire. Around the lion and the slogan, there was a wreath of wheat, laurel, and roses. The White Wheat of Moesia, the Green Laurel of Macedonia and the Red Roses of Thrace - the lands with dominant Bulgarian population. So this is the meaning of the colors of the flag as well. United We Stand Strong was literally meaning the lands of Moesia, Macedonia and Thrace united once again (and it's clearly visible on one of the maps from those times shown in the video. min 8:50) in one Bulgaria as it used to be during the times of the First and the Second Bulgarian Empires. This is the original and true meaning of the slogan and the colors of the flag.

There are some other possible interpretations of the colours as well, besides the standard "white = purity and freedom, green = nature and fertility of the land, red = blood of the fallen heroes". One theory, for example, links it with the Bulgarian Garibaldines and the influence of the Italian revolutionary movement on our own, particularly on Georgi Rakovski and the two Bulgarian Legions he created in Serbia. Another possible view is the representation of the three main regions of Bulgaria - Moesia (modern Northern Bulgaria, the first to be freed from the Ottomans), Thrace (Southern Bulgaria, with its fertile fields) and Macedonia (which was largely left out of Bulgaria and became the main reason for all the 20th century wars we took part in). This three-region division is also quite well illustrated by a couple of pictures by Nikolay Pavlovich from those times and is also another interpretation for the three lions in our coat of arms (while the three lions in the medieval CoA versions would supposedly represent the "three Bulgarias" from the late 14th c., centred around Tarnovo, Vidin and Karvuna). Of course, a more "vulgar" (pardon the pun) modern interpretation of the tricolour could be a parallel with our famous Shopska salad and its main ingredients - the white Bulgarian sirene/cheese, the cucumbers (green) and the tomatoes (red). Needless to say, that's definitely not very idealistic, though some people might still find it patriotic enough.

Actually the colours are so old that they are very old tradition and we have a lot in common with Italy for example a lot of bulgarians in the past ( centuries ago) emigrated to Panonia in north Italy and almost created country there. These colours can be seen in every indo-european nation like kelts, Iranians and many others. These colours are far older than the Roman empire.

@@-unionforhelptothepoorpeople The Shopska salad was indeed created by Balkanturist in the 1950s, along with several other salads named after Bulgarian regions, which didn't catch on quite so much (f.e. I think the Thracian salad was similar to what we now call Snezhanka). This is all well known and documented and I'm afraid you're not doing any favour to Bulgaria's image with your claims and reaction.

@@Email5507 The Chuvash people are mostly descended from the Suvar, who were originally not part of Volga Bulgaria (they were "joined" in the 10th century, during Volga Bulgaria's expansion). And the Suvar are likely descended from the Sabir Huns. The Volga Bulgars themselves were descended from several Kutrigur tribes (and the Kutrigurs themselves were likely a Hunno-Bulgar mix) and their descendants today would be the Volga Tatars (which got that name due to being conquered by the Golden Horde in the mid-13th c).

The Cyrillic alphabet (30) is much more extensive than the Latin alphabet (26), hence it's understandable some letters can't be interpreted literally. Such letters, for example, are я, ъ, ч, й, ш, щ, ь, ц, ж, ю (although some can be depicted with multiple Latin letters and do the job fine: ш sh, ч ch, etc). Nevertheless, the same applies vice versa: w and x don't have an exact match in the Cyrillic alphabet.

The first to raise the red flag was Attila's favorite son Irnik who restored the Bulgarian statehood after his father's death. Irnik raised a red flag with a crescent/trident above it. Dulo dynasty is a Bulgarian rulers dynasty. Gazan, Attila, Irnik, Kubrat, Asparukh, Kotrag, Arpad, Rurik etc. all are from this dynasty. Dulo clan symbol/tamga was the Baltavar (trident) Balta(axe)var(bow) symbolise the rule over the forests and steppes. Western Huns = Kara Bulgar, eastern Huns = Ak Bulgar.

Great job! Greetings from Bulgaria! Another popular interpretation of the colours is that they represent the three main historical areas of Bulgaria - Moesia (white), Thrace (green), and Macedonia (red). No offence fellow Macedonian and Greek neighbours ;) Less known, but intriguing hypothesis of the origins of the tricolour, is that it's been influenced by the Italian flag. Many Bulgarian revolutionaries, most well known amongst them is Kapitan Petko Voyvoda, fought alongside Guiseppe Garibaldi, and later took part in the Bulgarian uprisings against Ottoman rule. It is thought by some that they might have influenced the symbolics of some of the self-organised resistance groups. There was great variety of revolutionary flags, most often representing a standing lion on green, or more rarely red background. The flag of the Stara Zagora uprising from 1875 was white-green-red and it is thought that the official national flag is modelled after it. No matter the true origin, it seems that those colours were traditional since the official flag was quickly accepted as a symbol by all Bulgarians within and outside the Principality's borders.

Amazing video dude! You're quite good at presenting corect information! :) I just wanna add about the green part of the flag. It may come from the first bulgarian revolutionary cometee created in Belgrade (circa 1830) which did use green/white/red horizontal tricolor flag. I'm of course not sure just my theory :)

There is an inaccuracy in the video. At the Battle of Nicopolis, the Turks were not alone against the Crusade. Our Serbian "brothers" on the Turkish side are participating in the battle. In fact, the decisive attack that turned the battle came from the Serbian heavy cavalry. They are the most loyal ally of the Ottomans, not only at Nikopol but also at Rovine (where Krali Marko was killed) and at Ankara, where Tamerlane defeated the Ottomans and captured Bayezid. They are the only ones among the Balkan peoples who did not participate in the campaign of Vladislav Varnenchik.

Great video! I am Bulgarian and an art historian and I must say that you have researched well and the video is quite educational! The only thing that I can add is the symbolism behind the green in the flag - we are taught at school that it symbolizes the Bulgarian mountains and forests where the rebels against the Ottoman occupation were hiding during the struggles for liberation. Generally the green symbolizes the Bulgarian nature and freedom. Thank you for the great video and the way you have honoured our history and the respectful way you have presented the information!

Impressive video video, to put it mildly. The tremendous level of depth and detail here is easily overlooked. There were even some stuff I as a Bulgarian wasn't aware of. The only thing that's not mentioned is perhaps the strong tradition with the number 3 that seems to persist through out the ages and dating back to at least the Bulgar khans (Kanas is the more precise title). The Sun & Moon is similarly related, as the historic sources mention that these were the two main deities of the Bulgars. So I guess their presence in some flags is in that line too. Thanks for this great video. :)

I am sure that the colors white, green and red have no slavic roots. Actually slavic nations often use Pan-Slavic colors: white, blue and red. The example is Russia, Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, Slovenia and Czech republic. In the other hand white green and red are the colors related to Giuseppe Garibaldi used in Italy, Bulgaria and Hungary

Great video. Very in-depth analysis and a thorough research. But as a bulgarian myself I would like to add a few things: (Warning, this comment turned out to be a long one) 1. The year 681 is considered as the begining of the Bulgarian country. Why that and not Old Great Bulgaria? Well, the story is very interesting. It all starts during the time of khan Kubrat. One day he gathered his five sons (Bayan, Kotrag, Asparukh, Kuber and Altsek) and asked them to break a bundle of sticks. (This is actualy the story depicted here 2:14) So one by one they all tried, but none succeeded. Then Kubrat started pulling the sticks out and breaking them one by one. His sons told him that everyone can do it one by one and Kubrat replyed "Exactly". If they were to split up after his death, they would be eliminated one by one, but if they were together they would stay strong. Despite his warnings, after he died his sons eventually separated and indeed faded out. All, exept Asparukh. In 861 he moved to where our counry is today. 2. 6:34 Veliko (Велико) actualy means Great. 3. 6:56 Indeed. Shishman in Cyrillic is Шишман. The accent is actualy on "a". As for the letter itself, its pronounced more like "shu", the "u" being the same as in the word "up". We have that sound in the end of every consonant letter, similarly to how you have the sound "e" in the end of B, C, D, G, ect. Also the "a" in Tarnovo is pronounced that way. 4. 13:56 A closer translation would be " Unity makes strength" Anyway, I'm glad I found this chanel and I can't wait to see what else you have in store, General.

Great video! But only I can not agree that the bulgarians are not native. Bulgarians are actually native people. Tracian people were many, they can not just disappear. New evidences show that ancient chroniclers call the tracian tribe Moesians - Bulgarians, much earlier then 681. Asparuh and his people just have returned back to their native lands. The title "Khan" is a mongolian title and has nothing to do with us. The tracian title is actually "Kanas u Biggi" which means "Prince in the Lord" - many tracian people have became christians in the first centuries, so it is not a surprise. But, anyway, thank you for the video! I like your videos. Best regards!
