We need to mention a story that is about where our flag inspired from. (last form) Once upon a time, Ottoman Empire was having a war with Christians. A soldier saw a star next to the moon image reflecting from a blood pool and he reported this image to sultan with a great eagerness. Sultan couldn't believe his eyes and decided to make this image our official flag. A story from my childhood. apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/0812/Mond_Venus_comp600.jpg

That is a story not true. In reality, star and moon have been symbol of Turks. The Turks have used these on almost all their flags. History experts found that coins belonging to Gokturk Khanate have consisted of a star and moon. Gokturk Khanate lived in nearly 500s.

"Al Bayrak" means "Red Flag" there is no "the" here. It is just a coincidence that it looks same as the Arabic article "Al" which is "the". "Al" in Turkish means Red but it can only be found as an adjective and in literary usage and only reserved for national issues. That is why "Red Army" is "Kızıl Ordu" where another adjective meaning red is adopted. Noun form of red is "kırmızı". Another point is about your comment on Azarbaijan. Azarbaijan is a successor state of the Safevids not the Ottomans. Thanks

That's really interesting. In Greece we call our flag Γαλανόλευκη(Galanolefki)or Κυανόλευκη(Kyanolefki). The first part of both words Γαλανό- and Κυανό- both mean blue. Most Greeks today today use the French dirived word Μπλε(Ble) and sometimes Γαλάζιο(Galazio), which has the same root as Γαλανό to describe the color blue. Κυανό is rarely used. The only other instance that I know where it's used is the word κυανόκρανοι(kyanokrani) meaning "blue-helmets" referring to the UN troops.

When i was a kid (about 12 years old) i was taught that the reason why turkish republic didnt change the flag was because (according to a local legend at the time) during gallipoli campaign a civllian shepherd saw a pit filled with blood of the turkish troops and that pit of blood was reflecting the cresent moon and a bright star and that this was seen as a sign. This is not confirmed but it still is a myth told to kids to give them an idea of what their ancestors did for their country
@bordoenes62175 жыл бұрын
There are two schools of thought regarding the origin of the flag of Turkey. 1. Roman: As clearly stated in the video the symbol as has been used number of times throughout the centuries by the Roman empire. However it has never actually been used as a banner or a flag in any way or form, making its origin and use quite a mystery. Even by the time of the late Eastern Roman Empire the symbol's use was both limited and shrouded in mystery. 2. Turkic: Its generaly believed by most Turks that the flag actually has origins in their ancient traditions and customs, primarely their previous religions known as Tengriism. Its said that the crescent symbol was suppose to represent the God of the Eternal Sky, Tengri. The star was then later probably adopted from the Romans. The truth kinda appears to be somewhat in the middle. The Turks probably used them way before ever arriving or coming in contact with the Romans, but it never really took off or was used extensively untill they conquered the Byzantine Empire which also used it. They clearly wanted to be seen as the succesor of the Roman empire, and the Sultan Mehmet II had aspirations to even conquer Rome, meaning there was definitly insentive to adopt local Roman symbols and customs. But then again this might just be nationalistic rhetoric and propaganda, which became ever present in the late Ottoman Empire.

1) Name İstanbul is a bastardization of "Stan Polis" (means to the city) and used to refer Constantinople long before ottomans by the Greeks. (It's like referring New York as "The City"). Due to properties of Turkish languages an i added at the beginning and p turned to b. 2) Crescent and star was also used by old Turkic tribes long before. 3:42 Ottomans didn't change Constantinople's name to Istanbul when they conquered it. The city was refered as "Der-saadet"/"Happiness Door" and "Payitaht"/"Capital or where the leader lives" for a long time. Along those years, the public started calling the city "Istanbul" and there isn't much of a clue why they did it. In 1930, Atatürk, the founder of Turkey Republic, officially changed the city's name to Istanbul and let the rest of the world know any official document will be refused and sent back if the city is not refered as Istanbul on the paper.

Secondly Azerbaijan was never be a part of Ottomans but was historically and culturally related to Turkish history. There are many islamic and Turkish states that use crescent only or crescent and star as their flags, not only because they were part of Ottomans, because Ottoman state was the predominant islamic state at the time. It is true there is no official symbol for the islam, but it is highly possible that because of Ottomans crescent was also related with islam. Thank you again with your exceelent video.

A few correctons from a Turk. 1. Istanbul is shortened form of Constantinople and even in 16th Otoman diwan poems, you can see it, as in Nedim's poem "Bu şehr-i Stanbul ki bi mislü bahadır".On the streets it was called Istanbul, but officially it was called dersaadet or asitane by Ottomans. 2. In 1884, Ottoman Sultan was Abdulhamid II, not Selim III. His reign was 100 years earlier than Abdülhamid. 3. Eastern Roman flag was completely different than any Ottoman flags. Roman denarius coins included thousands of symbols. So we cannot attribute every similar design to Romans. They cannot monopolize symbols. Seljuks used a large star like Israel today, but they have nothing in common. Astrological symbols are very common. Stars and moon are used all over the world, by even uncontacted tribes.

It might have a SLIGHT chance we adopted it from Romans. Nice video, keep up the good work man. Greeting from Istanbul (:

I don’t know what your info is based on but before making a such video you need to visit the Ottoman Archives in Istanbul, where you can find all the info you need Also visiting the Topkapi Palace would be a good idea Other than that you should read books by the great ottoman historian Halil Inalcik and his apprentice who also is a great historian Ilber Ortayli. What I’m trying to say is making a video about the crescent and star is not something that can be possible by basic info collected on google.
@harrywillisdick86605 жыл бұрын
Wrong wrong wrong!!! The ottoman flags crescent and star was thicker and the Turkish republic one was changed to be thinner also you did not talk about the Red cross/crescent and it's meaning and finally the star and crescent dose not go 2000 years back to Greece/rome but 5000 years back to Mesopotamia/Babylon which was used to fend off evil so it is unlikely it came from the West but from the east thus the Romans/ Greeks was inspired by them.

great video with ONE POINT MISSING: ottoman state had numerous flags for different situations but their OFFICIAL FLAG is simply NOT A FLAG but a tailed standard, usually out of horse hair and is called a tugh. it is a well known turkish and mongolian royal/state symbol. until the 9th century the sultan's official banner was the tugh (usually there were 4 or 6) and thus the flag of the state. other flags served other purposes. but red colour being somewhat the ottoman dynasty's unofficial colour, it was overly used it on many standards, preceding the present one. look at the four tailed standards at 5:23, near the otagh (royal tent). those are the closest to be called as the head ottoman flag/standard than all else.

The Crescent Moon is one of the oldest figures of the Turkic Nations. It was born from mythology. In Turkic mythology, there was one God (Göktengri) but so many diffrent souls which has works and power levels. One of them was Ay Ata (Father Moon). His mission was protecting the moon from evil souls. Moreover, he was the father of the almighty and common ancestor of the Oğuz Turks: Oğuz Khan. In Turkey, we still say Ay Dede (Grandfather Moon) or Ay Ata (Ancestor Moon) for the Moon. Because of the reason that I explained, all the Turks but especially Oğuz Turks loves using that symbol. As I know; in the Turkic culture, diffrents numbers of pointed stars means different things. For example 8 pointed stars means the rulling Turkic Dynasty, 5 pointed star means the Turkic Folk which lives in aforementioned Turkic land's borders.

The Turkish flag is very important for Turks and it is an issue that we are sensitive to. The Turkish flag has a story. This sensitivity is actually created by this story. At a time when there was war on Turkish soil, there was a crescent moon in the night sky and a star that stood very close to it when we looked from the earth. Turkish soldiers were fighting hard to protect their homeland. So many Turkish soldiers were killed by the enemy that the ground was covered with blood. There was blood everywhere. By the way, martyrdom is one of the highest levels that can be reached in our religion. During that war, the reflection of the crescent and star in the sky on the blood of the martyrs on the ground later formed the Turkish Flag. Since the Turkish Flag is symbolized by the blood of martyrs who died while protecting their homeland and martyrdom is considered very sacred by our religion, people living in these lands respect the Turkish Flag very much. That is the story behind their sensitivities. That's why we don't paint the Turkish Flag on the ground. If it falls to the ground, we pick it up. We don't step on it. Disrespect regarding the flag is not tolerated in Turkey. Therefore, if you come across a Turkish person, I advise you not to say hurtful or disrespectful words and behaviors about the Turkish Flag. Otherwise, you may encounter an extreme reaction.
