Malaysia similarity design flag with USA sometime got us in troubles. When Malaysian medical & relief volunteers were in Iraq they were attacked by locals that mistaken our flag as American. One of them was shot in the butt, luckily no casualty. Edit: actually there were 2 casualties from the attack. A Syrian driver & a local Iraqi volunteer were killed. 2 Malaysian was injured, one was shot in the hip (not butt). She is Dr Jemilah Mahmood, the brave woman who is the leader of the volunteer group.

actually, the flag of the East Indian Company is said to have been inspired by the flag of the Majapahit empire, located at modern day indonesia (and malaysia), since the E.I.C. traded mostly there.

I could make the same argument for Romania and the kingdom of Dacia, which existed in 82 BC. Chad is not older than Romania. It's younger than most of Europe.

As a Trinbagonian (from Trinidad and Tobago) I'd heard it said that our flag is quite unique, but this is the first time I can actually deduce it 🇹🇹 It's not the most unique, likely (colour-wise, and field dimensions are standard AFAIK) but as with every flag it's the combination, reasons and purpose of it that matter. Fun fact British East India Company flag came from Majapahit Empire( it's one of influential trading flag at that time in South east asia), you can see the evolution of the flag remain white and red. While Malaysia and US take white red stripe (like BEI company), indonesia on the other hand take one line of white and red (also Majapahit Empire flag)
