I don’t know how to feel about this videos. While it satisfied my hatred towards the fake shutters, the fact that this guy unnecessarily created plastic waste and didn’t even put them in recycling bin bugs the hell out of me.

The house we just purchased has huge fake wooden shutters. There's also a bay window that the previous owners couldn't fit shutters around so they actually just painted fake ones around the sides. We're in the process of taking them down because the carpenter bees have decided they make an awesome home.

It's a pet peeve of mine too. We have a 1916 bungalow that has metal "shutters" that were taken down while we paint the house. I don't think they'll be going back up.

YES!! I just removed mine today (it was installed by previous owner). I'm so confused about the point of these "shutters." Its a waste of money, sometimes just ugly, and just breeding ground for insects and spiders. Thank you!

I came here from the blog because I too am infuriated by the fake shutters. But this was stupid and wasteful... Why would you just destroy and throw that out? This infuriates me almost as much as the fake shutters themselves...

Probably because adding extra unnecessary plastic to a landfill for the next however many lifetimes to make a 4 minute video is crazy... And buying the shutters only reinforces the idea to make more new shutters because people are buying them....@MealTeam6

I feel the same exact way! I hate Vinyl Shutters! First thing I did when I bought my 1850 farm house was REMOVE THE VINYL SHUTTERS! I found a few of the old ones laying around in my barn and I am going to either replicate them or just make board and batten ones from your other video.

I saw the title and was like, "noooo way... he's not promoting vinyl!!!" We are under contract for a darling 1933 Cape Cod house and the vinyl siding and shutters make me want to cry. I can't wait to (eventually) replace the siding and install functional shutters. I have to show this to my husband. He'll get a kick out of this too. Well played sir!

I appreciate the sentiment, but the execution leaves something to be desired. Firstly, you wasted $40. Secondly, a bunch of vinyl got deposited in a landfill. Thirdly, the manufacturer will need to make one more set of vinyl shutters to meet the increased demand you created when you bought the shutters - thus, more vinyl deposited in landfills. I'm all for the goal of making vinyl shutters a thing of the past - this doesn't accomplish that.

As long as we’re extrapolating, let’s look at the other side of the equation. This video currently has 6.8k views. Some percentage of those views are from people who are looking for info on vinyl shutters. After watching and learning there are simple and beautiful alternatives to vinyl, some of these viewers will choose another material. This will result in less vinyl ultimately making its way to a landfill, and will have a negative impact on retailer/manufacturer demand. Regarding the wasted 40 bucks, you’re probably right. But hey, it wasn’t your money.

Apparently I despise plastic shutters as much as you do ROFLOL We once had a house built in the 1930’s, the installer actually cut a corner out of the shutter to fit around the porch casing. Ugh! I don’t like vinyl siding too much either - makes too much noise when expanding/contracting
