Wow check out those impressive cruise ships. I certainly learned a lot about Madeira with your voice-over narration. At 7:00 that would be interesting to see that underground runway that you are speaking of. I remember seeing a lot of this area at night in a previous video. At 17:27 nice sign and that light tree. Wow a skatepark and the cable tobogans cars going up the mountain.

Hi Laughing Lion! Yes, the cruise ships are huge up close - there's going to be 10 or 12 in the bay on New Year's Eve to watch the fireworks. Its going to be so noisy - with the fireworks and all of the ship's blasting their horns going off at the same time.

He's just started out by doing some food reviews in Madeira which are really good. I think he's still there so you should meet up and do a video together. That would be great to see.

The name Funchal comes from the word "funcho", which is portuguese for "fennel", a mediterranean plant that among it's many uses would also be applied as a balm to mitigate problems with one's eyesight. The theory goes that because Lord Zarco, the founder of the colony, had been wounded in one of his eyes in North Africa, he ordered fennel be planted in the island for his own benefit, hence the name.

Hello fellow brit, very informative and by the looks of this beautiful island , a possible place to visit soon, is it easy to communicate with shopkeepers in English. I'm too old to learn Portuguese in the last few years of my life, I have visited the Canaries, South Africa ,Dubia ,and the close European countries (cigarette runs) I have seen many KZbin videos on Madeara and as I was born on an island ( Isle of Wight ) I would like my last holiday to be on a beautiful island, can you recommend your island ??

Hello Michael. You will be very pleased to hear that all the shopkeepers and hotel staff speak very good English. You don't need any Portuguese, though if you fancy it, just an 'Olá' to say hello, and an 'Obrigado' to say thanks will always be appreciated. Madeira is incredibly beautiful and if you stayed in Funchal and had a few trips out to see the rest of the island, I think you'd have a lovely experience.
