It seemed like a good time to tell you about this course because tomorrow, Friday, June 5, I'll be going LIVE on the Campfire Guitar Star KZbin channel for "Rock Guitar Solo of the Week #3". The title of that lesson is "When Minor Pentatonic Fails, What Works?”.
Make sure to tune into the channel (or catch the replay) for the live lesson because I want to show you an alternate approach to rock guitar soloing which too many guitarists miss out on.
Ya see, when I was gigging in my early 20s, I was fresh outta music college and was rocking the minor pentatonic scale like nobodies business!! Hendrix, RHCP, Tom Morello riffs, Zeppelin... I really thought I knew what I was doing.
Then....
A couple new songs got inserted into my bands setlist:
"Honky Tonk Woman" by The Rolling Stones
And
"Stir it up" by Bob Marley.
"Hey Will!! Take a solo!!"
I may as well have stepped on a rake that'd smoke me in the face...
My minor pentatonic licks weren't working and having the same, powerful effect they had on all the other songs.
In fact...
It sounded plain BAD.
It actually took me years to figure out and become proficient in this alternate approach to rock guitar soloing.
I can tell you that it's utilizing major scales, but it just won't do the live lesson tomorrow justice.
The thing is, I learned all my major scales and modes in depth in college and my soling still sounded bad.
I could tell you to move your minor pentatonic scales down 3 frets so that you can access all the major pentatonic sounds...
But go ahead and try it... if you were like me, I still sounded awful on the Stones song and the Marley tune.
The worst part was when Jonny (the other guitarist in the band) would play over these tunes...HE RIPPED. He was playing amazing, soulful solos!
WTF?!
Well... after years of practicing and taking countless lessons, I finally decoded this alternate approach to rock guitar solos and I created an entire series about it with my friends over at JamPlay.com
It's called "Functional Rock Guitar Theory".
It bypasses the complex, over-the-top music theory that I learned in music college.
Rather, (just like the name implies...) it's all about ROCK GUITAR.
And you wouldn't have Rock guitar, without Blues guitar, so you can bet The Blues is covered too!
This will help you find the keys of songs, how to play and apply scales and some super cool licks and tricks that will have you deeply understanding music AND the fretboard.
So check out this video today.
