"Train how you fight" because you will end up "fighting the way you train!". Keep it real.

Silat means more than just fight. It's also as surviving technic. It's useful in chaotic/emergency situation.

Totally agree. My family's silat that's passed down to me (800 years of lineage, I'm 37th generation, 38th to my children) is just called Silat, no dancing very few fine motor movement mostly gross motor movement easy to remember (neuromuscular engram) that just work to kill our enemies, pirates & invaders. Cheers!

Thank you for commenting. I love hearing about your lineage of functional fighting. Outstanding.

Very true words about the lack of partner resistance in demos y practice within Silat and most of the world martial arts today. This is why many criticize martial arts for what they have become in the world (for most part) as just flowery dances & fake exhibitions. In the military we have saying, 'Train how you fight'.

Tim, I would like to but it takes a tremendous amount of daily work. I love Marcelo's site, but ours will have clips from time to time.

That can be an interpretation, but I've had several instructors from Indonesia comment that the dance portion has two flavors- kembangan and bua.

Oya for untrained eyes, all the moves in Pencak will look like a dance and thats why people underestimated them but for a seasoned Pesilat, they will noticed it and prepare for what may come:D

ricofikri, thank you for your comments. I agree- refinement should be made through fighting experience to make the fighting more efficient. Terima kasi!

in lumpat harimau minangkabau we say kembangan ,flower,is the dance and buah, fruit,is the combat tecniks, your buah we call asas or djurus, some with weapons e.g keris, buah is done hard and fast and can be painful on the receiving end,I agree that not having full contact sparring is a problem ,but I find its a good idea to do some freefighting styles to complement your silat, muay thai, jitsu, mma, and to learn the dynamics of fighting

One teacher I might says Silat comes from Arabic "silaah" meaning weapon /armament. As you say, to fight.

Interesting video sir, you explained pencak silat quite well. I am from Sumatra and I know a little Silat from my family. To add a little bit to your information if I may, based on my limited knowledge of Silat; the word Pencak came from Minangkabau (West Sumatra Indonesia) word: "Mancak" which means "Dance" and it consists of an integration of all your "Langkah" or footwork and "Jurus" or techniques. It has a function to "show" your opponent what is your Style and how you move and how good are you in your Silat because in the Old days, as my teacher told me it was a normal thing when one Pesilat come and challange the other Pesilat in another "Perguruan" or Silat Schools and this Pencak is like Psywar before they have physical contact in a fight...CMIIW

if i was to go to indonesia where is a good school to train in in "street" silat ? thxs ( i live in France ) ..... looking forward to your book in august 1st 2016

Thank you. I suggest that you contact various schools and ask if they do safe sparring. Silat is meant for combat and sparring ensures that you can actually apply it.

The usual translation i've heard is that the Bua/fruit is the application, the Djuru as the root or just the movement.

Correct. If an art becomes solidified and unchanging, then it is by definition dead. Anything that is alive grows and changes.
