I wish I could leave like 10 thumbs up. This video has explained functionalism better than my teacher and 2 textbooks, and in only 10 minutes. Honestly you just saved my grades and my sanity!

Speaking as a functionalist... I am solely concerned with how the outputs vary in response to inputs. The function itself is black box. I don't care how it does it, which means I don't care what its physical manifestation is. If we're talking about consciousness or intelligence, these might be realized using an organic brain (neurons, axons, synapses, electro-chemical signaling etc.), but it might equally be realized in a software program running on a classical computer. I have no expectations or requirements that the state of the system be represented in any particular way. Furthermore, I see no reason to believe that consciousness/intelligence should be limited to organic brains. These positions are what define me as a functionalist.

Are the causes and effects associated with the state-type pain multiply realized as well? I understand that the biological/neurological structures are not necessary but at what point is pain no longer pain if we can't relate to alien creatures in this way?
