Hey if you want to support me, you can become my patreon or invite me for a virtual beer:

In this restoration, I started with a very old and rusty grinder that I found in the junk department on ebay classifieds. The mechanics of the grinder was still intact and it could be turned freely with some force, but some parts on the grinder were replaced provisionally.
As usual, I started the restoration by first completely disassembling the antique tool. This worked surprisingly well, despite all the rust almost all the screws could be loosened. I only had to cut one screw loose and replace it later with a custom one.
Both a piece of paper with old German writing and a D.R.G.M (Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster) stamp suggest that thehand cranked grinder was made before 1941. Somewhat in the 1930's I would judge by its appearance.
Unfortunately, a stamp could not be found.
After I carefully cleaned everything, the parts were sandblasted. Since I don't have access to a sandblaster at the moment, Mister Patina helped me out. In exchange for an old piece of wood and a beer, he sandblasted all the parts for me and sent me his own little restoration video.
I then sorted the components of the old tool and partially cold blued, hot blued, polished or painted them. My goal in the restoration was to accentuate the sweeping tool body with a powerful color and restore it to perfect condition. The attachments in turn had to be preserved to indicate their age. A few polished highlights round out the overall look and emphasize the functional aesthetics of days gone by.
Once again, I had a lot of fun with this restoration project and I'm happy to share the result with you.
If you like it, please LIKE and SHARE the video. If you would have done something differently, let me know in the comments.

I really appreciate your videos. As someone who watches them just for the relaxation, but understands nothing of the craft, I'm thankful for the extensive explanations and reasoning for each step. And you achieve a balance that I don't see often in restauration channels: you are thorough and perfectionist in what you do, but you don't modify and hide the signs of age so much that the items loose any authenticity. Well done!

I've just discovered your channel, amazing restorations and good to see the great work you've done on your basement. With respect, I'd like to make a small suggestion? On the part of the video where you're wet sanding from 400-800 grit, the screen goes dark and light rapidly. You can stop this from happening by changing a setting on your camera: Fixed Exposure. It will keep the same light settings for the whole shot and will alleviate any dark/light changes caused by moving light objects, in this case it is your hand. Love from England

@@NTRprojectsThank you for the invitation to further comment on your videos. I want to be honest with you. As for me, I can say from a layman's prospective that I have no issues with the filming or editing, in fact I think they are fantastic. Biu I really didn't feel qualified to give someone that has been doing this for a long time like you or Mr P. advice of this nature. I just tend to get absorbed in what I'm seeing you do and reading the subtitles as you work. Those detailed explanations of the process are invaluable! I'm amazed at the transformations you bring to the rusted, tarnished, broken and mostly unusable items on each project. I know I've not been any help to you in regard to the filming but I do appreciate your asking. Please keep up the great work and the videos coming; I love them. Gruß Tino This Mr. Patina is mentioned EVERYWHERE now, first at mymechanics, now with you. . . I think I have to subscribe to that too. The grinder has become really beautiful again, I didn't think it was that old. I think about what was originally at the point where the nail was and now the hollow pin is. Did you also think about a massive grooved pin? I would not have dared to "widen" the end of the main shaft and the shaft that holds the handle, because I would have failed. Greetings Tino

I like what you did with the wooden handle, I think you made the right choice there. Not sure about the polished..."support... thing" (?) at the side. On a side note, when you quench in oil, aren't you supposed to shake the thing?
@NTRprojects

You shake it when the geometry is complex, so there is no air trapped, because that would affect the surface continuity of the bluing. But since it was only a round piece, there was no need to risk a burning ;) but good observation. Nice you came and leave such a nice and thoughtful comment

I really love discovering your already restored tools in the videos. Just great to witness your progress. Do you have a new camera setup?

Oh that's varying. Sometimes on the street, sometimes at friends in the barn or basement and sometimes I find them on ebay. I always look around. Have a great day Samantha

Why the use of corundum in sandblasting this time? Is that 9 on the hardness scale or am I thinking of something else?
@NTRprojects
@NTRprojects 2 жыл бұрын
I use corundum when the paint is thick or the parts are not that delicate...and sometimes when I'm out of glasperls. I need to look up the hardness but corundum is perfect for blasting and used in general the most time
