good tip without having to buy or make a hot knife or dremel. I guess technically it's better to do it this way to completely remove any risk of setting the plastic on fire.

Although it's way more difficult, you can also manage to cut through totes like this with very sharp, sturdy scissors and a little elbow grease. Then sand with sandpaper by hand. (If you're like me and don't have a collection of power tools... yet :P)

We made one of these for my baby boy after watching this video, and we cut a 4.25" round hole in it. He loves it and thinks it's a house to hide in or something. He used to get litter all over the floor (it's on carpet) and he would bat his poop out and play with it. His new litter box solved both issues, and he loves it! Thanks for posting!!!

Thank you. I dug up a storage bin I had not been using, used soldering tools to cut the opening and sanded it down. My long-haired large cat used it as soon as I set it up and now can comfortably fit, while not making a mess with his strong kicks. Expensive hooded litterboxes were no good--this is the best!

I have an odd corner to put a litter box in my room. My over 17 year old cat needed her own box so I got a tote from the hardware that fit the spot perfectly. We both are so glad I watched your video. None of the litter boxes at any pet store fit the spot well at all. Thank you and Rock On.

This is the best instructional video for this project. I tried to use scissors the first time and nearly gave up (Tool Phobia). Invest in the dremel. Mine came with a few tools and included the necessary ones to complete the project. Once I had the right tool for the right job I was done in no time. Now there is no more over shooting the side of the box. Highly endorse this approach.

This definitely works like a charm! Super great advice. Thank you SO very much!! For me, my cats never used cat litter, usually poops outside in the lawn and near the washing machine (backyard) used the box just within 2 hours of setup! My family got tired of them pooping everywhere and the strong smell- so I was searching for an easy and cheap diy solutions; came across your brilliant video. I basically followed all the steps to a T. For the box, I bought a big 105 Litre (like double the size of first box in the video), made the 'entrance' by the longer side and put in 3-4 inches of rose n lemon scented litter mixed w non scented (we got the hint, they love the smell of detergent and soap hence relieving near the washing machine! Lol), and ta-da, instantly no more poops by the machine! I didn't even need to train them!! By the 4th day, there were 4-5 of them using it. So SO happy to see the results. Think I got lucky cause they could share their 'toilets' together! It must be the super spacious feeling they get from using a clear box. But now I feel they're hinting me to get another one- I'm onto making a 2nd litter box this week! =D

bro, your comment was irritating me, I said to myself wgaf about your cats and where they like to shit also why didn't you google how to get cats to use litter boxes, do u know about toxoplasmosis gondii etc. BUT THEn I read 6 years ago 2018 was a different time, a simpler time. How are your cats doing now? what kind of kitties do you have? I am a recently single 27 yo dude, im handsome (not to myself but what im told) but both of my girls (Twin Torties stubborn AF "tortietude") got pregnant before I could get them fixed. At peat cats i had nine down to 7. I'm a single man in a small town and I havce seven cats, shits weird TAKE ME BACK TO 2018

Thanks for showing another way of cutting through those blanket tubs. I've been using large blanket boxes.as.litter pans for all my house cats for over 30 years...but I never had to cut an opening..they just climb up and over or if they really have to go they jump in without any problems. I also feed feral cats. For their shelters, i use a 45 and 30 gallon tubs. To make the door opening out of both tubs, I use a hair dryer on hot to heat the area where i wanted the opening and carefully use a box cuter to cut through the plastic..,amazingly, it glides and cuts through like butter.

a better way to do it is use a hot knife, they are designes to cut thru plastic, without shattering or cracking. A lot of these cheap boxes will shatter and crack if you cut them with a knife.

Truly amazing how many people miss your point about it being difficult for some cats to jump out of sand. And, for the cats that CAN easily jump out, chances are that action is going to break up some of the clumps, making the scooping of dirty litter more difficult and leaving the litter dirtier. Great video. You handle a Dremel tool like a surgeon handles a scalpel. My only suggestion might be to leave the rim uncut with the rectangular cuts to provide some more strength to the box. The round hole makes for a very sturdy finished product.

THANK YOU! Yes, I have stopped replying to all of the comments about not cutting the box, it's exhausting and unkind to the cats. I have done as you mentioned before upon request. Since litter boxes should be replaced every 2 years and I do cut it so that the supports around the perimeter are there for stability. Thank you also for your kind words regarding dremmeling. You will read others comments that I do not know how to use it at all and that I am "killing my tool". Amazing how people see such different things! Please follow along on FB, Twitter and Instagram too!

Thanks for telling where you got your boxes. I looked everywhere else and could not find a box with a completely flat bottom. The boxes I made are about the same size but are not so easy to scoop. I've had them for years now and find a new problem that I want to point out. I cut the door on the larger side like you did and now that my cats are older (19) they step in and are facing the other wall so they don't go in all the way and just go with their back-end outside of the box. The door is probably best on the end.

Very late here but wanted to say that you can cut through them really quickly with an $8 soldering iron from Wal-Mart, and it doesn't leave nearly as many jagged edges. Probably should do it outside, as I'm not sure about fumes, but once it's heated up, cutting plastics goes pretty fast. That thing has more than paid for itself just for cutting plastic. I've never even used it for soldering. Lol. (Get one to use specifically for plastic if you go this route though... because it leaves plastic residue all over the tip). Btw: I just found this video, and it helped me a lot. My very large cat needs an even larger box, and I'm having to get creative. Thanks!

We've used the really large clear totes from Lowe's and cut out an opening on the end. The 4'x2' size is perfect for our multi-cat home. If we happen to skip a day, like when we're out of town, it doesn't get out of control or make the cats look for alternatives.

You ever thought about making a “Sifter” for your cat box. I got 3 nesting containers and drilled a 1/4 inch hole every 3/4 of an inch, it is mind numbing but when your done you have a system that allowed you to clean your(cats) litter box in seconds. Place the sifter box between the two other containers. Install the cat litter in the top container. When it’s time to dump the dump, you just pickup the top container and pour the litter into the sifter/container. Then you just pick up the sifter and all the dog treats and wet clay stay with the sifter. After the Cat gifts are bagged put sifter in the empty container and put the filled container over the sifter and ipsofacto Bobs your nanny.

We have two cats - one very large (tall, long-legged, big bodied) and one very petite (9 years old and still looks like a kitten). We gave up on conventional litter boxes! Too small. So we went to the local farm supply store and got two black rubber feed/water tubs. One of them is about 4' in diameter and the other is about 2-1/2' in diameter. These work very, very well because they're tall enough to keep the litter IN the tub and big enough for our big girl! The little girl stands up to pee and was peeing over the edge of the kitty litter boxes and I was forever wiping up pee off the floor because she over-shoots the box. No more!!!! I LOVE the way these plastic tubs this lady uses work!!! Very, very smart! I should have thought of it myself!!!!!

We have and have had cats who entered the box, backed up to the doorway, then pooped/piddled outside. All while thinking they were eliminating INSIDE the box. They even spent copious amounts of time scraping the litter within the box. I absolutely concur with your use of clear boxes, but unless it's for kittens, I would never cut a doorway.

Oh my gosh! Thank you for giving us a video with direct explicit instructions to be able to do this ourselves. Before now, I haven't had all the step-by-step instructions or the confidence to try this myself. If I need help, I can always watch the video again! Thank you for teaching us. I can't tell you how many cat litter boxes I bought for my geriatric cat with arthritis, who pees outside the box, because she can't squat anymore. (She stands inside the box, but pees outside box. I am at the end of my rope from cleaning up ammonia-packed cat urine from my concrete floor. There's hope. I'm off to the Container Store and to Lowe's.

Also, place a puppy pad outside the entrance. If she is in with all four feet she is doing the best she can and she feels she is in there. She just cannot squat low enough anymore to keep it from going over the sides. The puppy pad will catch it if she over-shoots the entrance. And ask you vet for arthritis support!
@lauries.4454

I finally made my box, but Athena still doesn't pivot once in the box...she pees on the wood threshold which leads into the little under-the-stairs room. You had suggested puppy pads, but she stops short of the box and just pees on the puppy pad. Which needs to be changed every day. I was thinking of creating a little stand-up polyurethane wooden post to stick in the litter so she would need to pivot. What do you think of this? I'm sure she's squatting the best she can with her arthritis, but I'm so done with the daily messes. I can't find cat diapers on-line. Any one know where I can get some?

Nice Job, you are very talented with the dramel tool. But you can do the same cutting with aviation snips, you still need to sand the opening. I never thought of using clear containers but that makes sense , what I have used is big blue containers that I got at Walmart and cut 6" diameter hole in the end on two of them and also one with the hole on top which the cats didn't mind at all two of the cats are in the 15 lb range and they have no problem. Great job and keep up the great work. Rick in Swansea Illinois with 28 cats that I call my kids, some are feral and just show up.

I used a 58 qt container for my girl for most of her life. I didn't have the skill to cut it and she likes peeing standing up (kinda like she is spraying) also she could jump it. But she is 16 now and has bad hips from a cat bite she got when she was young. So she started peeing my bed again, she did it before from fear and then because she was hyperthyroid. When she started this time after checking her out at the vet I work for we guessed it was her hips. So I got her a low entry box but it is to small. So thanks to our CH'er girl i learned of the double box method. You use one box the size you need then find one that is bigger length than your litter box, cut alternating holes, one on the left the other on the right. The cat weaves to get into the box and it can be as low as needed and they don't kick so much litter out. Haven't made it yet, just got to get the boxes. Nice to know how to cut the box now. ^^

Too funny. It's amazing, isn't it? I tend to get side tracked every time I get on KZbin. But the problem is there are so many interesting videos, and so little time. So you don't feel like you watched this video for no reason at all, I have 4 kitties if you want to make me a couple of these.

This is a life-changing design for a litter box. My cat was peeing on the floor and walls outside his old box. Since I introduced the larger box inspired by this DIY, he has yet to pee outside the box and that was over a year ago. Visitors who have seen it remark how great it is. And, since it was originally a plastic bin with a cover, it is super portable when my cat stays with a sitter. Super easy to clean too! If your cat has poo or pee problems with smaller, commercial boxes, give this a try!

I searched the website of "The Container Store" you suggested for "Large Storage Tote Boxes" for my large cat, but cannot find any like the ones on your video. If you remember the particular name or store number for the item, would you please tell me. I like that the bottom of your boxes are flat. I ended up using a 24 inch clear container I picked up at a local store and the bottom is not flat and the urine and litter gathers to the sides and difficult to clean...and the 24 inch is too small that my large cat's rear end misses the box and urine and feces frequently ends up going outside the box. I'd love to get the same boxes that you suggested. Thank you in advance for your help. I love your videos. I've learned so much from you!

Good job. I have done this before and find that its better to leave the folded, top lip intact so as to add a bit more support to the plastic box.

GREAT VIDEO!!! Tin snips work well too on plastic without the hazardous melting plastic smell at a third of the cost of a Dremel You also eliminate the melted plastic build up and the need for sanding which will make you itch just like you were working with insulation as I do believe there is a bit of fiberglass in all plastic these days * the flying fibers, also if you're going to use a Dremel you should have a mask for the microscopic plastic particles dust you WILL inhale . So again Tin snips will eliminate the need of these tools I also took a metal tube and stuck it under the lip " you can use either wire ties or drill a hole in the cross stabilizing tabs then just slide the 1/8" tube across the opening at the top then just use the cut out piece to make a swinging door I had to trim off ¼" of plastic around the opening cut out & the door swings freely it works beautifully P.S. I hope you understand what I mean by drilling a small hole in the cross lips that would stop you from sliding the small tube inside the lip or you can simply cut them out and use wire ties on the tube

Tin snips have been tried and are not successful with the thickness of these boxes. Jigsaws, reciprocating saws, etc. have all been tried and none offer as clean of a cut as the Dremmel. I am glad you found the video to be cool and also glad you found a method that works well for you so that you can offer your cats a more ideal box! Thanks for following!

Cement mixing tubs work better and there is no alteration required. They are also cheaper and sturdier. The curved ends of the cement tubs are perfect for scooping out clumps.

I made a similar box several years ago. My female cat, although small, kept backing her hiney up to the corner and peeing over the edge of EVERY box. If I remember correctly, I think I ended up using hedge shears to cut the box (don't judge, desperate times called for desperate measures!).

I've used storage totes and they worked well for a good while but lately I've been having issues of them eliminating right outside of the box (these are massive boxes so its not a room issue) so I'm starting to think its because they feel unsafe. The youngest cat (female, other two are male, all fixed) has been harassing one and seeming dominant. So I'm wanting clear boxes to maybe help. For others: Where to buy 5:25 - The Container Store

duck tape isn’t a bad idea, but I think the sanitary issues, if you can smooth the edges, (my Dremel has a sander attachment) then it looks better & nothing will stick to the duck tape that I don’t want 😀

I've been doing this for years. I use a wood burner tool with the razor blade attachment to cut through the plastic. With the heated knife the cut is really easy and fast. You can buy a basic wood burner kit at a craft store for very little $$$.. That was when I was cutting a hole for my cat, but then she started peeing while standing up, and the pee would spray outside the box where the hole was located. Now I just use one of these plastic bins, with no hole cut. Cat has no problem getting in and out, they're quite nimble creatures.

This is such a great idea! So much cheaper to buy those with a lid and make it than to buy the large enclosed litter boxes. Plus, I like that's it's clear plastic so I know how much poop and pee so I can scoop it out early to make sure it don't stink.

at 5:21, what size is that larger tote? (LxWxH) I tried looking on the Container store and saw some boxes, but it's difficult to tell. the closest one I could find was called "Our Jumbo Box" which is 27-1/8" x 16" x 12-3/8" h which seems like it'd be pretty good. My largest cat is 20" nose to butt (plus tail length is another 13").

hello. I am setting my rescue baby up for some stress...my dad passed away and then both of my mom's parents passed. I am moving into my old bedroom in her home for a month or two to help her and until I can find my own place closer to her. I plan on setting my Isabella up in my room completely, box and all. My mom has a young cat and Izzy is very cautious and frightened, so I want my room to be a recluse for her. I never knew Isabella to miss her box but just yesterday she peed all across my bathroom floor (which is tile so no biggie) but it made me realize that a) her box is too small and b) it can't happen in my carpeted bedroom! So, I began a path to learning and happened upon this video! Thank you by the way. My question is regarding cleaning the box? Can we use liners? What do you recommend and what do you recommend for litter? I currently use scoopable litter but now I am questioning that as well!! Any advice welcomed!

Thank you for the video! My boy aims high, (like, still standing) and I have yet to find a litter box high enough for him that doesn’t cost $50+ dollars. I also prefer a front entrance because we have an 18 year old cat who I’m sure would hate jumping through a small hole just to pee.
