If one listens very carefully at what she says, it is clear that South Africa is at the pivot point in Global Strategic alliances. It is either pivot to the West and become a US vassal state, or pivot to the East and be apart of the BRICS± movement. The most important point she makes is that it would be a strategic decision or pivot that would bound South Africa for at least 1 to 2 generations, in other words there is no turning back from it. My personal opinion is that the pivot to the East might just be what we need to become relevant in the world again, as opposed to being an Anglo American vasal state that is dictated to from London and New York. Perhaps SAA might again rise to be our national carrier instead of British Airways. We need to understand one principle very clearly, and that is that South African businesses will never be allowed to grow and be equal or bigger than an American or British business, if we stay within the Western Hemisphere. It will either be taken over, bought out, or crushed through an Anglo American vasal government or trade unions. Highveld Steel is a prime example of how a pro-American trade union will endeavour to sink a prosperous business irrespective of how many livelihoods they crush.

A very insightful podcast/interview. Professor Filatova is truely exstremely insightful and a highlly aclaimed specialist in her field of expertisé. Nuclear power is not clean energy and to be honest our economy is at breaking point. South Africa should not be involved in globel politics if we cant even keep our ship above water. Natural gas and the capasity to produce our own energy, food and clean warer and not be taxed on it, is the utmost of importance. The biggest risk at the moment is a food and clean water shortage that is closer than you think. In terms of Lesotho (a democcracy whos military has already in the past have througn out the SADF from their country and is backed by the UK) and Swaziland that is a Kingdom, not a democratic country with close tighs to the Zulu King, the Professor is completely of the mark though.

Probably same-same. That's the problem with nuclear... it comes with many, many, many years of baggage. Not only to the countries that build and manage it, but also to keep the nuclear waste safe for hundreds of years (requiring cooling chambers, etc.) Long term pain for short term gain.

USA or other Western countries who may in future build such a nuclear facility are far less likely to be as corrupt and incapable of ensuring long term stability in the maintenance of such a facility than Russia would be. Russia is inherently unstable under a despotic regime’s control. It is bound to be more corrupt, more incapable of delivering sustainable management to run such a highly complex and potentially hazardous facility than private companies potentially in partnership from the USA or Japan or Europe. It’s a no-brainer. Russia is a profoundly corrupt political system, with personal enrichment of the elites as it’s primary reason for existence. That and more influence around the world where those very elites can enrich themselves even further.
