My money is either in my pocket or in an account of "Banca Etica", the Global Alliance Bank in Italy, which does a wonderful job. I don't know about other GA Banks, but unfortunately in Italy "Banca Etica" doesn't have the possibility to attract clients with aggressive marketing or by showing off elegant offices in impressive buildings. What can we do about it? Probably we should talk to the people who are most committed to counter climate change into putting their savings in GA banks, in countries where there is one, and invest in sustainable projects, which can be done everywhere. Exactly what JHAT did in this video. JHAT, you rock, keep up the good work!!

Well, the human race is certainly getting ready to win a big, old Darwin Award with respect to environmental destruction and global warming, that's for certain. It's NOT simple. Now that the symptoms of global warming have become SO extreme, people are finally waking up, so denial of reality is a real problem with human beings. But that's not all, we don't seem to have a lot of foresight as a species. I'm thinking of hundreds of nuclear fission reactors all over the Earth that will need LOTS of fossil fuels to properly decommission them. So, it's sort of complicated.

What Kids Can Explain to Their Parents About Global Warming: Carbon dioxide, water vapor and other large atmospheric molecules have a blanketing effect on heat being radiated away from the surface of the Earth as infrared radiation. Called the Greenhouse Effect, it is a Physical Law and has helped regulate global temperature for billions of years. Indeed, at one point early in Earth’s geologic history, carbon dioxide became so depleted that our planet became a giant ball of ice (Snowball Earth). The next time that carbon dioxide was out of balance was when very prolonged volcanic basalt flows (Siberian Traps) caused so much to be pumped into the atmosphere that the oceans acidified and the global temperatures soared (The Great Dying). Other lesser extinctions caused by an over abundance of CO2 have occurred, but normally CO2 is benign. When the carbon cycle is balanced, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere decreases and increases with the seasons and with the Milankovitch Cycle (planetary orientation to the sun). At these times, the CO2 levels lag behind global average temperatures. However, when prolonged volcanic “flood basalt” (LIPs) occur, CO2 levels amp up the Greenhouse Effect with global temperatures lagging behind carbon dioxide levels. At this time in Earth’s history, the carbon cycle is being unduly influenced by the burning of carbon that has been stored underground for eons of time. The effect is the same as the basalt flows had when they released vast amounts of carbon dioxide.

I switched to another Dutch green bank, ASN Bank, one year ago after doing my own research. Not only is all my money now green, I’ve invested part of my savings in a 100% green stock portfolio and refinanced my house through another green daughter bank of ASN. Ironically, or actually fortuitously, this has also resulted in me having a greatly improved financial outlook which has enabled me to buy a new 100% energy and carbon neutral house! It will be finished in about a year and from then on I will also lease an EV (my current ICE lease will run out in a year), powered by the solar cells on the roof of my new house. None of this would have been possible if I hadn’t taken the time and effort to break free from the shackles of my old bank, EVIL Corp (actually, ABN AMRO but they might as well be called EVIL Corp)...

If the banks were only investing with the money we deposit with them, this would be much less bad than it is. I didn't believe this when I heard it but my understanding of the situation is as follows. Suppose a bank wants to lend a million dollars to some company. The actual percentage varies from country to country but to lend this money, they have to lodge a small percentage of the million with the central bank. Incidentally, these central banks are not government institutions as we would naturally believe. Then they can lend the company the million that they don't have. I Know. Go figure. They are then making profit on lending a paper or digital notation in their computer. If they have to deposit, say 5% and are charging, say 6%pa interest, they are actually earning 20 times (100/5) the interest or 180% on the money they actually had and deposited with the central bank.What a great racket. No wonder they are uber rich. Have I got my wires crossed somewhere.

Just to add one thing that everyone seems to forget about: One other way that you could impact the handling of your money by financial institutions is to decide to have as little financial savings as possible. Now I have only recently, and not all intentionally, but partially intentionally, done this. The point is NOT a joke. If you don't depend on the central infrastructure, but can depend more on family, friends, and neighbors, your resources are less available for use by organizations which you may not agree with. This may not be practical for all, but it is potentially a helpful factor, and one which also robs these central governing private entities of some of the information they want to engage their policies.

I don’t really know all of the technology and the efficiency of this tech I have to admit. Essentially, we're all terribly concerned about global warming here in the comforatble west, and of course we're all extremely keen to get involved and do something positive...right up until the point at which it presents something of an inconveninece. Thanks for demonstrating this so clearly for us xxwookey. All the best. Dave

@@JustHaveaThink It's more complicated than that. I'm fine with quite a lot of inconvenience. I've been using the train to get round Europe for most of a decade whilst (most of) the rest of my co-workers fly. I stay up till 4am to attend US conferences remotely, and get up at 1am to attend Asian ones. I've spent a very large fraction of the weekends in the last decade insulating and airtighting my house. I sit around with a duvet jacket on and get cold feet rather than turn the heating on. I just spent 3 rather soggy days camping in London. So 'inconvenience' is definitely the wrong word. And it's not even cost per se - I just spent £1900 on insulation, and am planning to spend best part of £4000 more to finish my EWI. But monthly fees is something I find very hard to stomach. I try very hard to avoid them. Perhaps that's not very rational (it is an ongoing service), but the question is, why should ethical banking cost more than normal banking - is it so much less profitable?
@JustHaveaThink5 жыл бұрын
Well I certainly retract my rhetoric in your case then...you clearly have gone to extreme lengths to make personal sacrifices towards the goal of climate mitigation. I wish more people would follow your example. I do still think you're being a bit harsh on Triodos though. They might be a bank but they are absolutely tiny compared to the financial behemoths like HSBC, Barclays and the like. The monthly fee covers admin stuff that the big banks fleece out of us anyway through tiny reductions in interest payments, which on a massive scale make a big difference, much like Richard Pryor discovered in the original Superman movie (showing my age a bit there!). My view, for what it's worth, is that the monthly fee is an honest and transparent charge and that it's worth paying in order to support organisations like Triodos through their early years of development. All the best. Dave

The problems with finance are they are parasitic in their pursuit of high returns. Fossil fuel industry is very heavily subsidised (governments give them welfare) investment banks love industries like this. Take a coal mine for example, its subsidised from cradle to grave, the planning, the land use, the water use, transport of materials, fuel, training, taxes, end of life. Otherwise it would not be feasible. Of the plethora of outcomes ranging from 'just cut the fossil fuel funding and let the markets sort it out' to 'wheres my green new deal?' what is happening now is beyond worse than all of them its truly dystopia. Mind you HSBC were never bothered by unethical investments, like laundering money for Mexican drug cartels.

I had another idea for a future episode of our extinction experience. Could we see all the propaganda that is being presented to people saying that it is normal and natural for the Earth to be heating up? There is a real effort going on to make us think an Earth without Icecaps would be a tropical vacation.
@JustHaveaThink5 жыл бұрын
Hi Franklin. Yes indeed, that is all part of the communication challenge. I think the vast majority of people are desperately looking for someone to tell them that things aren't really really really bad. It seems like people in the West can handle the concept of 'quite bad but also quite far away', but absolutely cannot handle the concept of 'catastrophically awful and right on your doorstep right now', so the propagandists don't have to try very hard to convince people to delude themselves and ignore the problem.

Climate is cyclical & planet driven that's why, let us scientifically study the effects that planet Neptune has every 41 years on climate, ok! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1/= 2018 :- Farmers battle worst DROUGHT in 100 years. 2/= 1977 :- California's DROUGHT affects the world. 3/= 1936 :- Areas of intense DROUGHT. 4/= 1895 :- Federation DROUGHT Australia. 5/= 1854 :- The great DROUGHT of United States. 6/= 1813 :- Great DROUGHT - journal Asiatic society Bengal. 7/= 1772 :- DROUGHT Chile - vineyards - crop fields.
