I arrived at FT Lewis Wa in March of 1978 and was assigned to HHC 2nd BN 39TH Infantry, 1st Brigade known as the " Recondo Brigade " and Col. Swartzkopk was my Brigade cmdr. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to Brigadier General, and there was a Bgde formation/ parade to welcome the new Bgde cmdr and Swarzkopf would go become a 4 star Gen. I was apart of my BN color guard detail at that event. I'm proud to served under him, he was the type of man that was well liked and RESPECTED by ALL.

I was a relatively young veteran of the Angolan War during Desert Shield & followed the campaign with keen interest & more than a little nostalgia. I was initially impressed by the the political insight & military strategy of the preparation of the operation, & subsequently by the strategic & tactical leadership & execution by all involved, down to the last soldier of all nations, ranks & races. General Schwartzkop was an officer & general of the highest order & this ageing mechanized infantryman salutes him.
