STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the densely populated neighborhood of Khan Younis, in southern Gaza Strip, mourned their loved ones on Thursday after they were killed in an Israeli strike that destroyed the homes they were sheltering in.
Family members and other relatives of those who were killed were seen crying over several covered bodies outside a morgue in the southern city.
Omar al-Qedrah was among those who were mourning the loss of his loved ones.
He said "the families of my aunt and uncle were gathered in one room" of a property when "around 7:30 AM, we heard a strike on the street."
"All the houses around (his relatives' house) were destroyed, and people were pulling bodies out," he recalled.
Al-Qedrah explained that his relatives had "evacuated Gaza City in the north (of the strip) and came to Khan Younis because it was supposed to be safer."
The airstrikes early on Thursday continued across the entire territory, including in areas in the south that Israel had declared as “safe zones.”
More than 1 million Palestinians, roughly half of Gaza’s population, have fled homes in the north and Gaza City after Israel told them to evacuate.
A doctor at the Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis said at least 12 people were killed and 40 others wounded in the Israeli strike that hit the populated neighborhood in the southern city.
The Gaza Health Ministry said 3,478 people have been killed in Gaza since the war began, and more than 12,000 wounded, mostly women, children and the elderly.
Another 1,300 people are believed buried under the rubble, health authorities said.
More than 1,400 people in Israel have been killed, mostly civilians slain during Hamas’ deadly incursion on Oct. 7.
Roughly 200 others were abducted.
The Israeli military said Thursday it had notified the families of 203 captives.
