This is what I like about Louis. He's not afraid to stray from touristy places and capture every aspect of a city. And yet he knows how to balance the unique beauty of one of brazil's poorest areas with its grim reality. His subtlety in constantly filming the presence of police is not lost on me either. I have always wanted to visit Rio... Now that I have a better understanding I know what to expect beyond what the tourism board wants to show me. For all of you complaining that this is too sad to watch... Shame on you. This is the reality of some people the least you can do is be aware of it as you watch on your ipad from the safety of your air-conditioned bedroom. And for those showing more concern for the animals than the people... I have no words.

I'm brazilian and its great to see my country on your videos. Also amazing that you did go to the favela other than just enjoying the richest places. I hope that you and your viewers had your eyes opened to how poor and exploited communities live in the third world countries. I also hope that those tours bring donations, projects and improvements to the favela and the people. There's so much in Brazil to see, specially in the North (Amazon forest), and Northeast... I hope you get to see more of the country eventually ^^

I think it's amazing that you showed us the Favelas in this vlog. If you live in a "Developed country" you often forget or don't realize how much poverty there is in our world. Even though we have our small problems from day to day, most of us probably watch this on a good laptop/computer in a safe and clean environment. So much to be thankful for!

That's true, Brazil is such a beautiful place, with amazing people, and it has so much potential to grow ald leave this reality of poverty and violence behind us, it's really sad that our government thinks it's more important to spend all our money buildind stadiums than in what we really need.

Right. They portray such a different image during the World Cup and Olympics, however Brazil has potential to grow and improve their status if the government stopped investing money into pointless things and into education and healthcare they woulf be a much better society.

I don't understand why so many people are saying 'Why would Luis go to the favela?'. First of all, it's his life, his vlog and he chose to go. Also, many tourists when come to Brazil want to see the favelas, see how difficult life can be there, something very different of what they are used to. It's a great experience and we can learn a lot visiting those places.

I was glad when Louie finally said something about the Favela tourism situation, because I was starting to feel a bit uncomfortable. And even though the tour guide said it was cool, I still find it a bit strange that tourists just go and walk through these peoples houses and neighborhood. The amount of suppression and oppression that they live under, by the hands of their own government, is second to none. It would almost be like tourists coming to the states and visiting skid row, you know, just for the experience. I don't know, I'm sure it really is cool with the residents, and I'm also sure that some of the money does flow back to the community. I'm just thinking out loud here. Anyway, Brazil is beautiful, regardless.

For ll go you complaining of why he went to brazil, I'll tell you one thing. First of all I'm not from Brazil, but there are tons of beautiful places in Brazil. There's a difference between going to beautiful places and going to the home of tons of people that live in poverty. Louis went there because he went there it was his choice, there's beautiful places but Louis didn't choose to go to them for a reason that I don't know. He wanted to go to a poor place but that's not the only place that exist in Brazil, and that's not the only economy that exists in Brazil. You should all know that.

Honestly I was afraid to read the comments of this video. I knew I would have those people who would only look at the negative side of the country. But on the other hand, I saw so many people defending Brazil, many people who understood the message behind it all. Brazil is a place full of culture, joy and love. The Brazilian people are known for being friendly, happy and united. Those people in the favelas have not chosen to be there, and even in that situation you realize that they can live their lives with joy, singing, dancing, being proud of the work they do for their community. Thanks for all those who understand that Brazil is not only the favelas. From a proud brazilian to all the people out there: "Sou brasileiro com muito orgulho, com muito amor." (RE) THINK.

I was mesmerised by the favela. It is amazing that people can live their whole lives in such a cramped space, let alone the hygiene and safety problems. It is no wonder there was unrest in Brazil during the world cup. The gap between rich and poor in that country is just obscene.

As a Brasilian I feel terrible knowing that there is SO many people living like this in my own contry. I wish I could change it all and give these people a good house, a good school and a good life state. I wish that when someone came to Brasil, They could enjoy the view, the beaches, the hospitality of my country without the fear of being robbed or killed in the streets. There is so many to change. Maybe someday when you come back you will be able to film everything and see a different Brasil, more beautiful and more save.

Poverty, crime, corruption, the plight of the powerless, it exists in most countries to some degree. The slums of india, the mountains of appalachia in the US, some of the estates outside of London. You don't avoid looking at them, you see them for what they are, homes and lives of people just like you under different circumstances and you try to do what you can to make their lives better. Even if that is just bringing attention to them. In every place you can find beauty and humanity you just have to look. Thanks, Louis.

Suiciniv Seugirdor Ok. Not most of Brazilians. But a large part of our population. I'm not judging which favelas are better. I'm saying that an enormous number of people here in Brazil still living in subhuman conditions. About "this kind of shit is unexistent in the rest of the country" You're damn wrong. Favelas are very common in different regions of Brazil. No matter where you go, you can find them. Let's stop pretending that we live in a big bubble where problems like this don't happen. They are present in Brazilian society. Now, MOST of the people pretend that it doesn't exist. Let's face the truth: o pior cego é o que não quer ver.

This video, and the comments, got me thinking. The footage from the tour in the favela made me think about how something so incredibly bad can become a beautiful thing, if you just change your point of view. I was born in Brazil and have never traveled outside my country so I think my opinion is actually worth something here and even if no one cares enough to read my longs ass comment I would like to respond to some of the things I've seen here. I'd like to start saying that Louis' way of vlogging is always great, he can get the best shots and make everything look beautiful, and what I mean by saying that the favela looked beautiful is that the colors and camera angles where great, you can take a good picture of a bad enviroment and it will still be a good picture. It made me feel sad, I got a tear in my eye just seeing how poor those people are and how lucky I am to live in a "rich" state, (even tho I'm not even near being rich) I do have a good house to live in and good education and the fact I can even write in english (just not perfectly) already makes me much more fortunate than the people living in the favelas. But my main point here is to say that Brazil is a great country. Definitely not when it comes to the government and the quality of people's lives, as you can see, but look at the art gallery Louis showed us, all of that beautiful art was created by the poor people that live in the favela. Brazil has some great culture, that basically no one other than brazilian people knows about, we've got great musicians, writers, dancers, scientists.(A brazilian mathematician just won the Fields Medal). It's not all about carnival, beach and favelas, there is a lot more here, a lot of people,a lot of true kindness, a lot of great minds, a lot of amazing stories. We still have too many problems to solve, but if you ever come to visit I bet you will see the reason why people still travel here and you will never forget the happy and loving people you will meet. I guess that's all, I got carried away and I bet nobody is actually gonna read this.

I'm happy you can show the world how it looks in favelas, I've seen one in Dominican Republic with an Humanitarian group and its definitely an eye opening. :3 Unfortunately the down side is that were not there to experience favela in person with all the smells, sound and atmosphere but we get to see bits and parts of your experience.:3

Louis, you should try going to the Forte de Copacabana (copacabana's fort) it's a really cool and different place to visit and in the fort there's one of the best candy shops in town.

That's eye opening seeing how it's in the favelas. Crazy seeing all of those bullet holes, and collapsed housing! :/

You should seriously go visit Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina. They have bullet holes everywhere from a war that happened around 20 years ago. The country is getting better, they are big fans of Kafa (coffee) and it has so many amazing alleyways and mysterious antique shops and all! It is so beautiful when you think about when three religions coexist, and so do olden times with modern ones!

That was pretty insane. Part of Fast and Furious 5 was filmed there.
