It depends on where are you from and which generation of immigrants. Many first generation immigrants are not as influenced by western media and do not hate China as much, unless you are an asylum seeker from China. Also notice that Chinese have a much better impression of Taiwan than Taiwanese do of China. This shows the difference in media propaganda within both countries. Also even if China does something cool, the western mainstream media would also not report it unless you dig hard to find out, or they will twist it in a bad way. Also the hate in China is NOT worldwide, it's is mostly in the western world. If you read news from more neutral countries in Asia, you would realize that. Do you know that China just found a cure to diabetes so sufferers don't need to keep paying for insulin anymore? Big Pharma in the US hates that though so the western mainstream media is keeping very quiet about that.

I appreciate you because I am a country club Chinese American who grew up away from all other Chinese in the world. I have just started to come out of the woods in the past 7 years. In this video David rightly went back to the late 19th century up through numerous anti-Chinese sentiments in US and even specific legislation against Chinese-American immigrants. The US government and the wealthy few are literally afraid of China whom they don’t realize have been #1 for all of human history in a 700 years up and 250 years down CYCLE. But you have to go back two plus millennia when waves of nomadic warriors rode out of the Mongolian steppes and swept over Central Asia, Asia Minor, the MIddle East, and Central Europe. The Hungarians and Finnish were affected and the Germanic tribes who make up Great Britain were pushed out of their territories because of the Asiatic nomads conquering the steppes. If the steppes extended beyond the Hungarian plains, then you would see even more intra-family and inter-family distrust and hatred of Chinese-Xiongnu-Turk-Hun-Yuezi-and a hundred other northern slant-eye --fueling an atavistic intense dislike. White people are really afraid of Chinese people. Payback is a bitch, I can attest to that, but guess where we are in the Chinese CYCLE! I’mmmmmm back!

I came to the LA area in 1986 and was the ONLY mainland Chinese person in school and didn't ever find another one in my friend circle, even until adulthood. That plus the fact I didn't know any English back then made for a very traumatic first 2 years in the US. I remember crying every night saying I wanted to go back home. Children are so mean to others who don't have the same accent, call things by different names, and don't have the same childhood experiences. The non-Asians and ABCs just don't talk to you but the Taiwanese kids will laugh at you for the littlest things and gang up on you because there are many of them and only one of me. For self preservation, I subconsciously started to speak Chinese with a Taiwanese accent and my dad would comment on it all the freaking time like it was embarrassing for him. Americans are basically brainwashed to think everything bad about mainland China regardless of the truth. For a long time I was ashamed but not anymore. Things have changed so much in China these days but anyone who's never been there or know anything about China will continue to think of it as it was 40 or 50 years ago. Even my own mother who hasn't been back since we came here mistrusts anything "made in China" and I keep telling her things have changed so much but she just changes the subject. I just wish people aren't so narrowminded and prejudiced when it comes to China. Just because the government is different than the government here, it shouldn't necessarily be concluded that life there is automatically terrible.

@20:00 this is the gem of the entire video. The less confident, less inquisitive Chinese Americans can give off a self-hating vibe because that's the narrative the American media around them pushes. Those who are more confident will understand the nature of geopolitics and the media-spin byproduct, and will go out of their way to get exposure to the actual China and other Asian countries. I've been commenting this a lot lately but I'll give it a shout here too: The way parents and other elders treat their Chinese American kids is often harmful and over time causes the insecurity in ABCs. I was like this too. When you ridicule and criticise instead of encourage your kids speaking Chinese, many of them will grow up abandoning their roots. This includes microaggressions (yes, I used the M-word) such as teasing or humbling them in front of their relatives for "being too westernised." Most Asian diaspora left their original countries for various reasons and those who left for many generations ago were even fleeing war (ironically some caused by U.S, some sided with the U.S during their intervention and lost) while other diaspora were just looking for more opportunities abroad. Most political baggage carried by the old diaspora are probably outdated or no longer applicable anymore. The country moved on. These past grievances are a minority but these politics are often picked up by westerners and use it to condemn country or even amplify it for other ulterior motives. The sad part is that the diaspora are unaware and still stuck in a past as it is the last memory of the country they left. If the diaspora ever returned to the same places they left, it would not be the same anymore. Agree with the comment about China, China has done the least worse, more good than bad to be honest. There had been many civil wars, it's had some tensions with neighbors but it's never escalated to have caused a horrendous mass deaths, at least not as U.S had done in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Cambodia, Philippines, Myanmar etc etc those are often overlooked and forgotten. Everything is glazed over by Sinophobic politics, much of what is promoted by the west today is purely for control and other geopolitical objectives. My advice to Asians here in the west, you may have your grievances but do NOT let yourselves be used for the white man's geopolitical objectives in Asia, they need any excuse to cause war and bring mass deaths to Asia, it only benefits them and their profits. Asia is on it's way to the top right now we should be proud and empowered by this!

When a conflict happens - the leader of ASEAN (Singapore) will instruct the rest to take a policy of Non-alignment. The reason why we can do this is because filipines largely depend on the economy of Singapore (domestic maids/nurse etc), which is why the USA host the Shangri-La dialogue here in Singapore. (Importantly to mention - Singapore has been doing our very best to get China to be more active and involve towards being our trade partner, technology and everything economic related.) So it's no surprise that these countries are viewed more favorably by _____-Americans. Second, Americans have been fed a constant diet of anti-China propaganda for decades (Communism, no liberal democracy). They've been indoctrinated to democratic ideology. So it is expected that they would view China negatively. Third, China may have done some unsavory things but so has America. Which country has done more or far worse in this respect? The answer is pretty obvious. China hasn't done anything that the USA hasn't done more egregiously. So let's cut the hypocrisy, shall we?

The guy who commented that Koreans view ourselves as Aryans is wild. We obviously are not Aryan (North Indians are), and we don't think that we are European either. Maybe the commenter thought so because Koreans like fair skin...? One Japanese guy did really think like that at one point though, and came up with the 'Datsu-A-ron (out of Asia philosophy)', claiming that Japanese people are European. Obviously the Europeans thought he was ridiculous. And I think Asians aren't necessarily jealous of each other, but are trying to protect themselves from others, just like how Europeans fight each other (as a defense mechanism) all the time. Especially when China has a huge influence politically. Koreans for example hate China (the government especially) after Xi Jinping became the leader, because his government is censors the hell out of the media and even releases false information. China once said hanbok is a Chinese outfit and Son Heungmin is a Chinese athlete when they are obviously Korean. Korea was at one point invaded by China during the Korean war, so we will take such moves seriously. Just to give you a context - Koreans did not view China that badly when Hu Jintao was the leader.

I endorse Qin Hui’s view that the Chinese Hukou system resembles the Apartheid system in former South Africa, except it is not race based but urban-rural based. The Hukou system is definitely not sustainable in the long run and should be abolished just like the apartheid. The Chinese economic miracle has largely depended upon the Hukou system (whether Hukou as a means of “primitive accumulation” is a prerequisite to industrialization is a separate question), which the rural population has been heavily exploited (reason why Li Keqiang said that there are 600 million people living under 2000 RMB a month) to benefit the coastal areas (which provided the middle class) and foreign investors. In other words, foreign businesses actually love how the Chinese government is authoritarian, because they don’t have to hire security guards to break down strikes (all they had to do is to call the local government and security forces would arrive to crush any disobedience). However, we can see that the Chinese economic and political upper class love to send their relatives to the US, which means that they don’t want their children to live under the Chinese political system, but they also don’t want the rest of the Chinese population to enjoy the same rights that their children enjoy. The Chinese middle class is comparably small (in terms of percentage of the total population) compared to the west. If the Chinese middle class grows to a size as large as the west percentage-wise, I don’t think the current political system will be sustainable.
@ubermenschen36365 ай бұрын
You have no idea what you’re saying. You’re making up stuff at best, brainwashed at worst. Today’s China has a bigger middle class than USA due to the collapse of U.S. manufacturing and industry. To wit: the creation of the Mid-West Rust Belt. Meanwhile, China is the world’s factory. Majority of China’s population is located along the Eastern coastline - geography, weather, water resources, agriculture, and transportation encourage economic development in the coastal region. China’s rural population has declined substantially as more workers join the manufacturing and industrial sector located in the Eastern coastal area. As the cost of living in China is much lower than in USA many Chinese are middle class than American. To wit: Chinese workers avail themselves to low cost massive transportation network, low cost electricity, diverse food, housing without property tax, and a national healthcare. These same basic needs in USA cost substantially more or nonexistent. Finally, your comparing China’s treatment of its 50+ rural ethnic groups to South Africa’s apartheid is the height of ignorance ; it’s not worthy of a comment.

Also, the wealthy sent abroad to study as extended education, it does not substitute the education provided by the Chinese system, contrary to the popular belief of Western University being superior, they are treated more like cash cows for foreign students, it is known for brand more so than merit.

Many Filipinos even adopted Catholicism or other Western religion; others consider themselves Westerners by acquiring Western pop culture while surrendering their Filipinos heritage. Meanwhile, each colonial power looted, scammed, raped, and exploited the Philippines’ rich natural resources and naive Filipinos. Even after Philippines’ independence of 1947, the colonial power subjugated the Filipinos using puppet government and Western propaganda. Today’s Philippines remain a poor, under developed nation - courtesy of Western powers. GI Joe left the American legacy in Subic Bay and Clark bases: brothels, kinky prostitution, gay sex, STD, HIV, go-go bars, narcotic addiction, alcoholism, trafficking, and fatherless children. So when a fleet of Chinese Merchant Marine ships act aggressively to non-Chinese shipping in the South China Seas it looks bad. China has a reputation of being a scary aggressive people to be around. China does not have an independent mass media agency to check the government. All mass media sources in China are beholden to the CCP government. But China news by its neighboring states like Singapore, Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, and Australia give outsiders a more balanced view of China that you won't get in American society which can be xenophobic at times. Why does it matter? Be proud of Chinese regardless. People need to respect others political party and their way of running the country. I like the ccp as an Asian American because I hate irresponsible adults who just know how to blame others instead of being more self determined and find ways to get better.

The CCP has done so much harm to China you can't reconcile it. China should of been Number 1 Country in the world decades ago, if not for the CCP! The CCP is the 2nd worst government in Asia only behind North Korea maybe the worst government on the planet! Things wrong with China, Corruption, Tofu Buildings, Horrible Food Safety, Polution, Dancing Granies that play their music WAY TOO LOUD! I rate the Philippines number 1. They are the most kind and caring in Asia I find. (I find Vietnamese also kind) South Korea number 2 they have done an amazing job starting with nothing and very little land to create a powerhouse of a country.
