Hi Nelson, great great video, very informative, loved seeing how you do the chemicals. Chris and Carlos at OFE do give out very helpful information. Yes, I would love to see what other plants you grow! One suggestion is to lower the volume on the music, makes it a little hard to hear you.

Hi Magda. Thanks for the input. I’m gonna do away with the music when I’m giving tutorials. I realize the the music sounds different in all devices. I’ve heard it in many different outputs and in some you barely hear the music where as in others you barely hear me. So moving forward the music won’t be played while I’m explaining or teaching something.

Ah, this was so full of information! Thanks, Nel. Perfect timing. I appreciate the talk through and seeing you spray some orchids. I was afraid of spraying too much Permetrol. Now I know not to be. Thank you! Your videos are always incredibly enjoyable to watch. Your background with the phals and vanda roots is just beautiful. I would love a tour of your landscape and other plants/trees. I'd also like to hear a little about your composting. I have a Jora compost tumbler, but after 5 years, one of the chamber lids hinges rusted off. I thought I could use just the other half (two chamber), but nope, a rat got in so I have to get rid of the whole thing. The next one will not have metal hinges. Have a good weekend!

Thank you Amy! I will do some videos soon on my yard and I’ll talk about how we compost. We stop doing bin composting fir the same reasons. Too many rats are attracted to it. As well as raccoons and possums. So we do a different type of composting now. We do use fruit peels in the herb garden, but mostly use leaves, weed, and most of the fruits that fall from our trees that get damaged. But I’ll leave the rest for my future video.

@naturenel
@naturenel 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t use the natural approach in my greenhouse and surrounding plants because using natural products means I have to apply almost daily. I used to wash each of my orchids with liquid soap and neem oil. It works great when you have a controlled environment. But here at my ranch the only way is with hard fungiside and insecticides. If you have the time to be applying and cleaning almost daily, then try the natural way. Neem oil is great. You have to use it constantly for heavy pests seasons.

Thank you Nelson, so informative. My orchids live outside under mango and avocado trees and I have a severe thrips problem. I purchased the two pesticides from OFE. A grower told me Orthene does the trick for severe thrips problem. I have to buy the goggles and respirator mask then I will spray. Thank you very much for this demonstration and safety tips. It is just heart breaking to wait a whole year for an orchid to bloom only to have the buds dry up and fall off. I always enjoy your videos and your orchids are a feast for the eyes and soul.
@naturenel
@naturenel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Ally! Thanks so much for watching. And thank you for your compliments. Orthene is very good. I don’t use it cause I heard it’s even more toxic than what I’m using. But it does the job. Florida has a big thrips problem. That’s why once I see buds pruning and looking yellow, I begin spraying.

Hi Samantha. It’s good practice to always cover as much as possible when using heavy chemicals to control pests and fungus. I was spraying yesterday and with al this crazy wind lately in Miami, the spray went everywhere. I was fully covered from head to toe. If I would have not had my gear, I would have had all those toxins in and out of my body.

Hi Carlos. I don’t really spray for snails. I take it that my spray combo takes care of that cause I don’t seem to have a snail issue here. What I’ve been spraying for is scales, millibugs, and fungus. We’ve had allot of rain. It’s made it difficult to film videos as well.

Great video! Do you spray the phals the same way? (Entire plant, roots and leaves)
@naturenel
@naturenel 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Maria. Good question. I spray the phals all over including the roots if the roots are exposed. But most of my phals are in hydro clay beads so the roots are not exposed. What I don’t like to do is spray the blooms if there are any. The toxins can hurt and dry out the blooms. I spray the shoots with buds to kill any thrips that may be present. But never the flower once it’s open.

Thank you Nelson! It makes sense. I was just wondering about the blooms and crown rot.
@naturenel
@naturenel 3 жыл бұрын
@@mariapina1755 yeah crown rot happens where the moisture stays in that area for too long. That’s why I don’t like to use Sphagnum moss and use hydro beads. You do have to water allot more often, but you don’t run a risk of rot or fungus.

Is this a preventative treatment as well? Do you spray blooms?
@naturenel
@naturenel 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. If you see that it’s very rainy outside or your buds are blasting, I would do a once a week preventive during heavy wet seasons. The spray won’t hurt your leaves or buds. I try not to spray open blooms.

Is this for viruses as well. Was just watching Danni's video with orchid with a virus so I'm curious.
@naturenel
@naturenel 3 жыл бұрын
No. Viruses on orchid from what I’ve heard can not be cured. All you can do if the orchid test positive for a virus is put it outside on a tree. Let it live the rest of its existence out in nature.

Is it safe to use this near fruit trees? I have a coconut palm im trying to save but i have a banana plant next to it. It wont make yhe fruit unsafe to eat will it?
@naturenel
@naturenel Жыл бұрын
I personally do not spray near my fruit trees. As a matter of fact ever since I did this episode, I’ve switched to spot spraying insecticides. I use a handheld sprayer and spray directly to the plant infected. I don’t spray insecticide all over the greenhouse to avoid over spray. As far as fungicide I only spray once a month and that I do spray all over the plants. Definitely do not spray near your banana trees. I wouldn’t.

I usually spray my plants according g to the severity of the infestation. It’s a matter of practicing on your plants. Everyone’s environment is different. I can only talk you what I do for my environment, and what works for my setting. I have put out many many videos on pesticide and feedings. My advice to you is to study your seasons and see when the pests season hits the hardest. I spray Permatrol as a preventative through the heavy raining season. I also do a mix of Sevin, Permatrol, and Orthene. This is an extremely toxic combination so various is key. You must wear protective gear when spraying and keep all animals and children far away from the area for at least a day. You don’t want to be in hailing the fumes. Never spray indoors. You don’t want to ever spray those chemicals inside your home. Always outdoors please. I use a hand-held sprayer bottle. About a gallon bottle. I like to spot spray only in the plant that is infested. Hopefully this will help you out a bit.
