Paul Stamets and After Skool team up to break down the mushroom life cycle.
Mushrooms are a type of fungal organism with a life cycle that is similar to the different stages found in plants.
Mycelium is the primary “plant” portion of the mushroom and is the most active, highly dynamic stage of the mushroom life cycle. It serves as the immune response that supports not only the health, vitality, and immune response of the fungal organism, but also supports the health of the surrounding ecosystem. When harnessed in the form of supplements, human beings also benefit from the significant health-supporting power of mushroom mycelium.*
As Paul likes to say “Mushroom mycelium is the immune system of the Earth!”

So if mycelium makes mushrooms and mushrooms make mycelium, if someone harvest mushrooms will mushrooms grow back in the same spot without spores, will the mycelium continue to produce mushrooms without spores?.

Great question! Check out our blog called "The Makings of a Successful Mushroom Foray" that discusses sustainable mushroom foraging practices. Question 5 in the blog talks about the impact on the ecosystem when removing mushrooms. You can read the blog here: fungi.com/blogs/articles/the-makings-of-a-successful-mushroom-foray
