What a lot of people don’t understand is that inconsistency is good. You’ve been going through a lot of growing and learning so every piece you apply your knowledge and reap the rewards. So many popular artists kind of go through stagnation because they find what works for them and what people like and stop, as an artist you should always be learning and growing! I’ve had a lot of fun watching your videos

I couldn´t help but to pause and analyze the references as well and I found some more things. I think they focus more on color theory or color relativity and contrast. Colors have different contexts depending on the colors around it so by adding contrasts of different types you emphasize what you want. Firstly the Values are sharp so the shadows and lights are exaggerated for better contrast. Then by having grays and desaturated shadows right next to bright saturated highlights it will then look brighter and more saturated in comparison. Its the same mindset with using complimentary colors in the grays. So basically ad the opposite so your eyes have something to compare things to as to exaggerate contrast. I guess technically its not an uncommon or hard skill in art but they are so good at it and take it like a step further I feel like. But I like your videos, these ones really help me understand art and new approaches to it.

I think it's better to learn color relativity. I learned a lot from light ponderings. But still, I learned from this vid 🫶🏻

Most of the paintings you chose to analyze have strong color choices so it makes sense to add some Grey to make the eye feel comfortable looking at the piece and also make it look interesting at first your color choices were already more to the Grey side of the color wheel when you added more Grey the painting looked muddy but it's good you actually noticed that!

for reflective light (also known as bounce light) you still need to consider colours from the background. the reason why rou suggests a complementary hue for bounce light is because they used desaturated colours in their background in their example. without a complementary colour, your light will look muddy. notice how the jiaoqiu painting has a bounce light that is blue-purple instead of yellow-green which lines up with the environment. this trick is essential to make your characters look like they belong in the environment, which is to say, to achieve appealing and dynamic lighting, you must first begin not with the character but the background. even just choosing a flat background colour is fine.

I noticed many of them have colors disaturate close to gray and less render too. Felt like this is more about light, shadow and reflect tricks. While those are highlighted more than the actual rendering of the face which was toned down.
@muramura_mura_Ай бұрын
Hope you can read this cause I suppose I know why you couldn't execute the theory. The references you chose to analyze are all in high-saturation colors with muted/desaturated shadow (the grey you mentioned), it isn't only bright, it has to be high-saturated as well. So when executing the theory on your drawing, the orange you chose was bright but wasn't saturated, that's why it looked off. And another thing is the artists you decided to learn from used mostly harder brushes and colored their artworks from large areas of shadow to smaller areas to the details, you basically understood the basic theory but when doing it, you used softer brushes (air brush I suppose) and didn't really color from large areas of shadow to smaller ones, thus the painting looked muddy.
@Sarikha_152 ай бұрын
OH i know this, i actually found this out recently too. its not that they mix in a complementary colour, its that they just turn down the saturation of the original colour so it only LOOKS like the complementary, but its really how our eyes percieve the contrast. the grey is next to such a vibrant red that it looks green, but its STILL RED 🤯

I think one thing from the reference pictures was that the background was either very light or very dark. Yours was more like a neutral grey and maybe that's why the colours looked like that. Either way it turned out great

This is a classic painting method taught in China and Russia. You should find educational books by "old school" artists that will tell you the principle of working with color. And then this work with color will not bring you such trouble as now. You don't yet understand how to do it correctly, but you have everything ahead of you. Base.

TYSM FUNG!!! i always have issue eith hair and your video and tutorials on xiaohongshu help me smm!!
@Maren6172 ай бұрын
If you want to do this faster and in a way that allows you to tweak and experiment easily: paint the hair in greyscale first, in a very ordinary way with shadows being properly dark. Then apply a gradient map to the hair and select its colors and values yourself. E.g. on the leftmost point of the gradient map, where the darkest shadow should usually be, choose a lighter tone, and a different hue. So you can have e.g. a gradient map going from light blue to dark brown, light brown, and light yellow highlight. You can also experiment with replacing one of the other intermediate gradient points with something different. When you like the result, save the gradient map to your favorites so you can just apply it with a single click next time. 🎉

it really is just a matter of balance, in case of a highly saturated color -> a more desaturated shadow will balances it out and vice versa. in a lot of your example in this video, you can see the characters have a very high saturated hair color, hence the highly desaturated shadow to balance it. the whole grey shadow thing wouldnt work if the neighboring color isnt saturated enough to compensate for the desaturated shadow

For the first attempt, the other problem maybe the shapes of hair. Master Drink Wine Eat Meat have very good sense of shape, which is why her character's hair look nice. Another addition detail is beside some painterly part, she use sharps edges to defined details and help the overall look not muddy
