The average white consumer doesn't understand patois real well hence why I think there is a disconnect and unless it's simplified in a understandable format (Shaggy record comes to mind) it will never connect and the masses includes a good cross section of White America to crossover.

You gotta spend money with the big dogs if you wanna get on, and stay on. This is also why the quality of music gets worse, and worse every year. Cause artist feel pressured to not only water their creativity down to fit in, but also have to team up with people who don’t give a fuck about them, just to reach a higher level. Cold game.

Math basically described what happened with “Exhibit C.” Although it’s a certified classic, with its esoteric lyrics and lack of a hook, it is decidedly *not* a radio record. Yet Hot 97 started playing it endlessly. Jay Elec wasn’t signed to anyone at the time - so how did that happen? I’m sure someone nabbed a sizable bag for those early spins.

NOPE. hip hop DJs break records that's what it is. So the best thing about a run like that is since I as a DJ I broke it organically all the industry thots aka Esso ho ass they all line up with a big bag to pay me to create that same J.E buzz. No one knows except for the DJ who paid vs who didn't!!! All you need to do is spin 3-5 records for the culture each yr and the payola will get even stronger. Industry hoes are followers. So now if and when that artist blows tf up.. they come back to them with exclusive drops, tour opportunities and of course when they learn how the industry really works they will give that Dj a bag 1st and foremost because "they played my shit for free and believed when others didn't". This is exactly what Drake, Wayne and Hov does with features. Do something for free for the right one will come back 10 fold

Ive always prided myself in playing the song tht nobody knows off the album tht eventually becomes the second single. This is such an interesting conversation, because it proves that the rap game is in fact a "game" just like sports, and there are so many factors that contribute how someone becomes a winner. Let me say frankly and briefly that when it comes to music, certain producers are creative but have a formula that appeals to people, certain producers know how the masses mind works. When it relates to MC's, some have the gift, and some don't. What MCS need to understand (and this includes Math), is that they need to focus on the audience, and strike a balance between who they are naturally as artists and what the audience wants from them. I know it sounds complex and it might not make sense to many, but that's what matters. Unless you have the gift off the rip, people are not necessarily going to dig you as an artist. Two classic examples of artists who learned what the audience wants from them are Biggie and Jay Z. Biggie had Puff's advisement but it was through his observation of the money making Hustlers and the players in terms of how they dressed and what they talked about which added to his repertoire where he could create a lyrical circle of Street stuff, fashion, sex, back to Street stuff. 🤣 Jay Z watched Biggie, Nas, and others to take him out of the "lyrical Miracle" space, and make him an aspirational icon that everybody wanted to follow, and he picked good beats. Another good example is maybe Tupac who wasn't necessarily A Thug, but understood from the street level what he needed to take on in terms of an image to get everyone to want to look like him and be like him. The lyrics weren't so important when it came to Tupac 'cause he had the image. If you want 2 good examples of the "two sides of a coin" look at black thought, and Beanie Sigel. Two rhyming partners around the same age from the same neighborhood. Both had success but in different ways. Black thought was a Renaissance type artist whose music and production appealed more so to a crossover crowd which was largely White. Beanie Sigel was more hood and talked about aspects of life that appealed to a more Hood audience, that was largely black and crossed over to some extent. Both were successful but from intentionally different paths.

Agreed... unfortunately the consumer has changed.. meaning the marketing changed to fit this new diverse audience. Meeting your audience halfway is difficult when you have nothing in common and all they wanna hear is the shit they're spoon fed from the radio. It forces you to make a "radio hit", and after a while that makes everything blend together and sound the same. No one can be an individual in that environment. They all just keep chasing the sound they know works.

What about Kendrick? He made an album that was personal and meaningful without really leaning on radio hits, and ya know what happened? The radio doesn't play it.. except maybe silent hill and that's because it sounds like a radio record. Also you can't single out 1 of the 10,000 rappers because he's well know. Cole does a better job of meeting his audience half way without abandoning his message.. Kendricks last album was all message and wasn't received well by anybody except for his die hard fans.. I'm a big fan and can still say he made some strange decisions on that album. He didn't play the game and now Mr. Morale is his lowest rated album to date.

Organic; The radio picks you up when the streets pick you up. (Bobby, Young Ma) That’s 1 scenario. 2nd scenario, the bag drop. Which is $500/$2000, per ad, per station (QC, Empire). Then, if/when you go up, you don’t have to pay no more. The station’s waiting on your next hit.

Here’s another scenario: we had video outlets back in the day (We Know Them all) before KZbin that rocked the joints that didn’t get played on the radio. We didn’t have to worry about Mobb Deep getting played on the radio, we had CD’s bouncing in and out of cars and players !! We also had crazy Mix Tape/Cd projects (Funk Flex included) that repped those hard jams seriously. That era has been gone for over 10-20 years mainstream wise.

My thoughts are there is no such thing as a “Radio Record” they only did that to get the gangster rap off the radio and to make it more marketable. In return Boom Bap suffered. A radio record is whatever the label pays the radio to play because if the label or managers spend enough money on the record, they’ll make it a big song and the radio will play it. It doesn’t have to have a specific sound. It just has to have the bag behind it. Eventually you’ll start to like it. People been saying for years how the radio will play a record so much that they’ll make you start liking this song. This is why. Sometimes, rarely, a song will be so unstoppable that the radio have to play it. It happens more now a days being that we have the internet. But the radio is still PAYOLA. It’s all an illusion and Smokey mirrors. Numbers, everything. It’s money put behind these songs to make you like them🤷🏾‍♂️

The diff between the BIG, HOV, Nas era was that they made street records but they also fed the radio with records women like. This all comes down to song writing. Group Home's "Supa Star" and Gang Starr's "Mass Appeal", "You Know My Steez", Brand Nubian's "Punks Jump Up" , Pete Rock and CL's "TROY" are examples of actual Billboard Hot 100 hit records with that east coast boom bap sound.
