The argument you are making for Designer Toys being boring (no variety in the mold, minimal paint app changes) can be used against Funko POPs. You're singling out sculpt variation as the defining characteristic between boring vs not boring. I know you've spoken about chase variants on say a single POP, but even when they change more than the color, say the pose of a single character, I would make a case that it is not much of a drastic change to edge it over Designer Toys for variety. Especially when the base molds (specifically human heads on POPs) are very similar to one another. At the end of the day, most Designer Toys don't have the capital to mass-produce / fund new molds at the rate of a company like Funko, so why would any company only release 1 to 3 colorways before they make a new mold? They probably made a sculpt with the potential of multiple colorways in mind to help mitigate the cost. "Designer Toys" signals to me they're probably operating at a smaller scale, closer to an independent operation, despite where they might individually be manufacturing their toys. I get what you're saying, and you're entitled to your opinion, but your feelings are misplaced.

As a collector and a toy designer I disagree 100%. It’s all about the chase. These bigger companies like funko have absolutely no creativity. They have made their money from licenses to bigger companies. Us independent toy makers bring new designs to life instead of using IP licenses and squeezing every last penny out of it.

There are companies that do change up their molds. Like the Dunny reused the same molds for a long time,, but then started making some new artist Dunnys with some unique head or other body piece that obviously required a new mold to make it. But Dunny is made by Kid Robot and that’s now owned by Neca and they have a lot of money compared to small indie artists/producers who cannot afford to make many molds just yet. So to get to that point, they might be releasing colorways for a while until they make enough to pay for the very expensive new molds. There’s also another fact about Teq63 which is that it gets flipped for at least double or even triple the original price... the demand is very high for all of Quiccs toys, not just the Teq63, so that might help you understand the justification for it being more expensive then you are used to.

This dude just seems bored of collecting in general, and feels the need to put everyone else down to make himself feel better. I felt a bit bored and overwhelmed last year with pops, so I stopped collecting them (for the most part) and sold all but around 40 of the ones I had (out of over 400). I choose to collect TG and Chomps now because I love spooky stuff, and my main toy collection is all bigfoots and yetis. I also really love their simplistic design, and the fact they all fit uniform in the same cases I choose to put them in. In my opinion, POPs were better in the early days when they all shared a similar body mold. He seems to just collect these things because of hype, and he wants to be able to flip them when/if they are worth something. If you do that, of course you are going to get bored. Designer toys are cool, but they won't stay relevant forever. At the end of the day, you will have way more fun if you only collect what YOU like.

I honestly don't know why I am giving you the time here. Last time I checked my bank account for the funding of my indie/designer toy production, I was not "banking." Toy production and handling of tooling is incredibly expensive upfront, and to continue production on your own, it is even more expensive. The lucky few that get to be called up by bigger companies are not "banking" either. Your hot take on this medium for the sake of views cast such a broad stroke that you don't consider how many different facets exist beyond the big designer toy companies that you might not consider boring. The Artist that make these may have been people who worked in the toy industry and have finally gotten to make something that they love, instead of for a major company. The majority of artist don't have the luxury to "bank" anything other than the passion that drives them to make their work, and don't get to have toy making as their main job.

Most designer toys have a specific character like Freddy Funko that they make many different versions of but almost all of them keep designing toys as much as they can. These small artists can’t just buy a license and make a run of 10,000. I love designer toys but I don’t need every color. I buy the ones I like and then buy one from another designer it’s not like collecting from a major company that you can’t just buy 1 line.

Your blanket statement of “designer toys are boring” and comparisons to Funko are really ignorant and based on practically no research. Funko is a huge company and their toys are super low quality, extremely mass produced and are just other people’s IPs turned into a similar size/shape/style over and over again. These designer toy companies are small, sometimes 1-2 people making extremely limited production of ORIGINAL toys. The less you make, the more expensive they are to make. They do not cost $2, especially ones with superior packaging. Lots of these companies HAVE to make several color ways and/or have higher price tags to turn any sort of profit. Also, there are THOUSANDS of different designer toys, not just the 4 you mention.

Teq63, if you didnt know, the different designs are different collaborations with different artist. If you dnt follow different designers and artist in the community, then yea they would be boring to you cause you wouldn't get it and wouldn't get why one is painted the way it is. Also...Teq63 is just ONE line under the artist Quiccs...he has other molds, Teq63 is just the one he uses to collaborate with other ARTIST....its all about research and your knowledge of the artist. dont just buy cause of the hype....buy cause you fuck with the artist....thats my opinion.

Personally, I find that the best way to collect these is to not focus on one particular figure but rather to find the ONE that you like from a series and hold onto that one. The monotony of designer toys is something that you can't really avoid just because of professional purposes but the artist figure in and of itself is a unique piece that can be used to create a fantastic home display when paired with other inspirational pieces

I think that as a consumer though you have choice. You don't need to buy the 50 different ghosts. If you want to buy pops buy them. This video seems very negative for absolutely no reason. Also art isn't priced simply based on production costs. I think it's difficult for someone who isn't a designer to understand all of the time and effort and imagination that goes into these pieces. Regardless tho, if you're bored just don't buy those. Buy single toys from tons of different independent artists and support the growth of the industry instead of buying licensed toys from a huge company like Funko. Or buy Funko pops lmao if that's what you like but I think it was kind of weird to just make a video calling out a bunch of designers for no reason.

Hiding behind the keyboard warrior card, nice. I want to get into the art toy scene, not exactly as a collector but as a designer. I completely see where you're coming from with the 'boring' aspect to art toys, but there are plenty of options out there in variety, you just gotta get out of the Gamestop funko wall, and go places. Real designers exist, and they make flippin' incredible works of actual art. What doesn't help your argument however, is what is on your wall because you bought, and support those designers that keep it simple with one mold and little color, yikes. Afraid to say it, but if you want better, you gotta give better than $30 for an art toy. Also, good god, funko pops?? The most manufactured corporate icons ever???? And you collect them??? I wouldn't be surprised if the rarest funko pop was on ebay for 50 bucks because they make a million of each, even the 'rare' ones.

Box Attack! Well that’s the thing is he’s really not getting into different territory and his comparison is actually pretty spot on. It’s just that, like with painting or “high art” or anything like that, you have tiers ranging from really valuable, well crafted, and very inspired pieces to essentially junk thrown together for mass consumption or uninspired and untalented attempts to capitalize on that desire. I think your points are good too, but for true collectors of designer toys your choices in them are stuff most collectors don’t mess with and aren’t the best example of the medium. I'm still not 100% sure exactly why or when the funko community and the designer toy community started to become so entangled with each other. I have not been able to really piece that together. I collect Funko Pops but I collect a lot of cool statues, figures, etc but it's all because I have a deep love and appreciation for the story, characters, and source material of the item. That's where designer toys lose me. If I was a big fan of a particular artist and they came out with a super cool TEQ or Chomp I may be attracted to that specific item but to just collect them all just to collect with zero idea or interest in the underlying property comes off really stale and uninteresting to me. I may one day see an artist I really appreciate or admire team up with a company like this and could see myself attempting to pick up one of these figures as a fan of the artist but that's it. I don't need 10 chomps of varying color and glow lining my wall just because they are piece limited designer toys. It's not why or what I collect. I find the overlap odd since most of us collect funko for the properties they adapt but the appeal of art toys/designer toys is to get them because you appreciate the artist which to me means they are not really in the same zone as funko. I see them as two very different things and am surprised by how many people are shedding funko to jump ship to designer toys seems like an odd ship to jump too in my opinion. Designer or Art toys aren't really for me, funko pops are. Anyone who that is their jam - go for it. I am just a bit put off by these newly branded designer toy collectors constantly shitting on their funko pop collections suddenly and acting all high and mighty like "I collect art now you loser move along with your small chibi vinyl figure". Like, got it, you don't like pops anymore - put your opinion out there once and then that's good.

I'm a new toy designer and in an ideal world, it would be great to drop a bunch of different toy designs. But in reality, it cost $6,000 to produce ONE mould, and another $1,000 to do a print mould of that style. Also you have to understand there is a minimum order unit that is required to produce a new toy design, such as 1000 unit of that toy. I say go the route of small limited handmade figures. You have more control on the amount of designs, the cost, the production limit, etc. With $6000+ you can hand make soooo many figures

Sorry, this was your start in the Designer Toy Collecting scene - I'd be pretty bored too if this was my first view. If I can make a suggestion, check out some of the lines under Pop Mart, Unbox Industries, Mighty Jaxx, Actoys and 52Toys. Really nice stuff - I think you may like the Freeny's Dissectibles from Mighty Jaxx, or Skullpanda Ancient Castle Series from Pop Mart, or even the first set of Unbox and Friends from Unbox Industries. Give this scene another shot, I promise they're not all cookie-cutter work ;)

I truly appreciate where you’re coming from! It takes guts to voice your opinion and expect to get flamed because of this. I drool and adore different variations, character depths and art styles and details of certain designer art toys. Totally agree with your take on the same mold, the same splattered paint works, the same pose. I wish the word “designer art toy” is not confined as common tongue to these..figures you’ve just pointed out. These companies and studios are printing money with just those repetitive toys that lacks volume and character. Like Funko Pop, KAWS, Be@rbrick and the likes of it.

Robbie Velez the fact is that when you use the same mold over and over, I don’t care who makes it, they are boring. Most designer toys do this. That’s the main point.

@@BoxAttack My point here, generalising that there are no other companies that do not do the same practice as reusing molds over and over is a disservice to the hobby. Companies such as UDVtoys, Unbox industries, instinctoy, coarse, etc. Pump out a max of 4 CW's for a single mold. Some of their pieces, even less. Totally fine if you get bored of it though, am just trying to share the broader aspect.

Yeah, this video didn't age well. Just because it is an opinion doesn't mean it's not wrong. I think the problem here is that out of all the designer toys that you could have chosen, you chose some of the most boring ones. Yes, that includes Quiccs' Teq63. I might get a bit of hate for this, but I do agree with you that these are overhyped and boring. Not only that, but the quality and size of the mold do not justify the big price tag. I ended up selling mine and focused on other designer toys that I personally think are more interesting and explore different molds. I think Joe Ledbetter is a great example. Not only is his style very unique, but he also constantly releases different figures and characters. I suggest you look into him and Gary Baseman - among others. To compare designer toys of that caliber against funko pops (which are mass produced and use the same mold for the most part) is kind of an insult.

As a new collector of the Teq63, I like to see what each artist will bring to the table and transform that canvas into their own creation. So I would say they are far from boring. If they were just blue, then yes. But real design is done and gives each their own identity using that mold. To me not boring, just different.

From my understanding, you are saying that as a collector most designer toys are not different enough from one another for you to be interested in them - and I agree. Many companies now do it for the hype people, people without personalities buying "art toys" to have the whole collection thinking they will be millionaires in the future - or buying them because it is the "cool" thing to do, and end up having a bookcase full of the same kaws figure in slight variations thinking this is the epitome of style. Vomit. And these type of people will come at you for collecting funkos just because it's hype to hate funkos. But you chose a very touchy subject and a very clickbaity title and did not share a very nuanced opinion, so, even though I agree with you, I don't really find it weird that people are misinterpreting what you said :P

Yes, today designer toys are boring and in the future they will be worth nothing, It's always the same, skulls, ghosts, rabbits, bears, but they don't make transcendental characters. I want to make my own toys, but I have an idea, I don't want to make boring toys like the ones in the video, I want to take a look at the past, and bring Vintage characters with my original design. I plan to make a line of 6 different figures, I hope it turns out. When it happens, I will come here maybe to show my creation.

Totally agree with you. Funko change the classic form of the pop to bring some refresh to the line. But, as you said, the make to many of the same (like thanos or hulk with the colors of the gems) The only thing is that funko is given to much Pops in a short time and some are not as awesome as before. They dont make hype us with something new, just a new version of something that they already have. And the designer versions that they give, sometimes they are not as we expected.

I think every collector should collect what they’re into at the time and once it gets boring switch it up to other things or even take a break from it all. Years ago I was collecting all kinds of collectibles from 1/6 scale, statues, action figures, vinyl toys and even pops. Got bored of them all even tho nothing I bought was the same thing with color variations. Started selling and went totally a different route and got into fashion. Now I still do buy collectible toys here and there but definitely nothing from big companies. I find dope artists on Instagram that they sculpt, make the molds and hand paint their own stuff and come out with new designs all the time. There are shit amount of cool stuff out there with toys, collectibles etc.. that’ll just make it very hard to get boring. If a design gets boring, just find other artist and buy their work or again it might be time to move on to other things 😜
