The Philly soul sound had a major influence on Bruce Springsteen. He sampled it heavily, trying to capture its wistfulness and a hope laced with personal defeat. That was the music playing on the boardwalk in the 60's, so of course it impacted him. I'm amazed that places like Philly and the Jersey shore influenced the path of the American experience, but logically, it was perfect. It was the most integrated place in our society at the time.

The cultural irony of my youth was that I felt left out. I wanted to be on the other coast, as did my friends. Today, the music of the East Coast from that time is more relevant. It causes introspection and a desire to live and move. I was in the eye of the storm and unaware.

The feeling of this song goes farther than the Funk, deeper into my Soul than the perpetual influx of information and stimuli offered by the vastness of the Web, and touches that place deep in my mind and my heart where only music of this immense emotional power can grasp at. Heed the words of Mama Soul sittin' in her rockin' chair, don't mind the colour of your skin, just sing from your Soul.

She told me son, never you mind, just sing from your soul little boy And I loved her (mama soul) Yes I loved her mama soul (mama soul) How I love her now (mama soul) Oh mama soul Well I'm your boy (mama soul) Yes I'm your little boy (mama soul) Ohhhh (mama soul) Mama soul

Dammit! I listened to this in the office and my colleague was sitting there Photoshoppin' and Adobe Illustratin' and suddenly her hair blew up and became a huge Afro and she ends all of her sentences with "...baby" or "peace". She just asked me, "Say brutha, could you spare a moment to go on ahead and get me the updated logo file from the server? Peace." She's Asian! I am now being sued for excessive groove and inappropriate use of funk in the workplace.

Max Wheeler Catchy little ditty, huh? It had a nostalgia to it, even when it first came out. The message is so upbeat, being about harmony and understanding among people. "One day I asked her why her skin wasn't the same as mine. You know what she told me? Son, never you mind, just sing from your soul, little boy." That's poetry!
