From all songs of the 70s, 80s, 90s, 20s... this one is in all details burned in my cerebral cortex for the rest of my life - i wil take it with me into grave. I'm a drummer, not a piano player, but I could play the arp, chorus and the hook line out of the pocket if someone want me to - at any time! That's the magic of musical genius.

On the studio version, Joe played the bass line on a synthesizer. I read that he played the line at half-time and then had it speeded up on the mix. When he went out on tour, Graham Maby played the line on the bass guitar. Just shows you how talented Maby was, and still is.

I was 5, before I knew about this Joe Jackson, I made up the rhyme, "Joe Jackson, he's a man, he lives in a garbage can. Then one day that year, my dad came home to Long Island from New York City record store with this album, raving about it, and raving about the coincidence with my incessant rhyme. My favorite song on the album was CHINATOWN.

SUCH a catchy tune. This takes me back over FORTY years, to when I lived in Edmonton. Great days, they was.. Only trouble i have is what he means by the 'Other side' I have a thing about what lyrics are saying, because the sub conscious hears them 'and sort of records them and they can mess with your head in the long run.. if they are sinister and subliminal. Confused yet??

I had forgotten about this song- holy damn ! The soundtrack for my life at 19 going to college (art school) for the first time. …met so many amazing people, mentors taking me on because of the zest for fresh ideas (after growing up in a small town in So.Cal.) made so many amazing friends…wow. Thanks for posting this - and thank you Joe Jackson. Check out his live version - the first band member he introduces is the electronic bass machine he used in the original. just supposing AI didn’t exist at the time, someone had to program that bass rhythm - dad gum ! I was trapped in a world of 60 & 70’s pop music that even my only (older) sibling (whom I now insist on calling “my idiot brother” refuses to step out of, to this day. Sneering at every musical style that has come along since…WTF? …really? the Clash? Sex Pistols ? No DeadMua5, Bruno Mars, no Kool Kids, no Jon Gomm, Foo Fighters, 21 Pilots, 3 days grace? My bro was my musical influence growing up (prog rock thumping a shared bedroom wall), I learned to isolate the instruments, and found a profound love for synths, etc etc. - he couldn’t even get with Tomita. Our parents had a hi-fi system set up that played in our living room or den - just so they could chillax to CSNY, Barbara Streisand, CCR, Wagner, Beethoven, the Beatles, Big Band jazz n Elton John. I just don’t get it…what makes a mind stop enjoying new things? I pretty much loathe the fossils of my own generation. …just saying
