Unpopular opinion: I'm a proponent of newcomers listening to their studio albums. They let you familiarize yourself with the songs and provides context for the live version. Some songs aren't so much jammed out live, or at all. Others, like Ghost, are vehicles for extended improv. What happens? Each live version is it's own adventure. No one, including the band, knows what's about to happen! That's the fun.

That's how I feel about new listeners with Grateful Dead. Studio stuff allows the listeners to get their bearings on the actual songs first.

I concur. I love their albums. If you grew up late 80's / 90's it's all you had except for trading tapes,,,, which I will never get rid of.

I think you’d dig their song, “Sand”, as well - serious funk with simple yet poignant lyrics. “Birds of a Feather” and “Down with Disease” are really good jam vehicles with catchy melodies also. And yes, Ghost is almost always jammed out. Improvised jams are really what Phish does best, though they can write cool songs.

I want to add that their “jams” aren’t just trading solos for 15 minutes. When they’re cooking, they create on the fly - new melodies, sounds, rhythms - you never really know where some of these explorations will go. There are other times when they just lock in on a song’s groove and jam over it, but it’s almost never 3 guys standing around watching someone solo - they jam as one unit.

I’ve seen some long ghost jams. They get into a spacey ambient sound thing. It’s really slow and mellow. They’ve got some cool gear and enjoy making different loops. And the lights are great too. You gotta go if you can.

Live ghost versions will often shift the root note from A minor (dorian mode) to D major (mixolydian mode) to propel the jam into dizzying bliss. Various uncanny shifts and ideas can happen intentionally or accidentally on the fly. Sometimes the cohesiveness just feels so self- actualized. It's high risk/ high rewards experimentation that will melt some people's faces off on an average day.

One of the greatest things about Phish is their genre-bending. Like you said in one of your videos, it's hard to pinpoint Phish's genre. That's because they take so many genres and mold it into their own sound. You got funky Phish, spacey Phish, bluegrass Phish, etc. Pick a song next week and they might not sound like Phish from this video or past videos you've reacted to. Welcome to the adventure.
