“You can feel good about Hood” is the Hood Milk slogan. No two shows are EVER the same. And neither is each song played live. Always a little different, or VERY different. That’s why we love this band! Thank you for giving them a shot! Phish is like licorice, you like or you don’t.

I absolutely learned to love Phish. Two decades ago I thought their music was super weird and unappealing. Later in life I had friends who were into phish so I started going to shows here and there. I kept going to shows until things finally clicked into place for me and I got hooked. I continue to learn as I dive deeper and deeper into their extensive live show catalogs, and even their studio albums, as well as the history of the band and their songs. My knowledge, love and appreciation grows the deeper I dive into the world of Phish. It’s been a blast. Good luck on your journey!

One of my favorite Phish songs... it is played like a love letter to their humble beginnings in Burlington, VT. The band used to rent a house across the street from (or very close to) one of the Harry Hood dairy factories, and they could see the smiling logo of Harry Hood regularly. Their landlord was a man named Mr. Miner, and he was apparently very cool about their partying and constant band rehearsals, and would even hang out with them from time to time as he appreciated what they were doing with their music, and knew that they had potential to go far due to their talent. Many of their early songs could be nonsensical at times, but this one always grabs me in the feels... some versions are so beautifully jammed that there are no words to describe the appreciation and love that they can bring up inside of me. As far as your point about learning to like/love something... I agree that you either get something or you don't. Often, it is repeated exposure that can help you understand your appreciation for something new, but for me it was love at first sound. I knew from the first moment I heard this band that they were very special human beings, and in touch with something musically that few if any other people are tapped into. So glad that you are continuing to share the Phish love on this channel, and that you are surrendering to the flow. Can't wait to see you at a show... it is such a fun, inclusive, and freeing experience! And no, you don't have to be high to enjoy the music or the people that are there (even though many are)... just go and be yourself, there is nothing like seeing the band in person. Much love from Oregon!

The part where you say You can’t see yourself rocking like they are, it’s because they are waiting for those parts, the soaring guitar solos that are built up to in the second half, the lights and crescendos. They’ve been in love with this band for a long time and those are their favorite parts so they go nuts when it hits. The part where you say I like this This is a good vibe at the end, I Iike that part too😊 thanks for doing these reactions, I love witnessing someone see my favorite phish parts through fresh eyes. I hope you catch a show one day

I read the article you were talking about a few days ago. Found it kind of similar to my experience. I was into a select few songs in high school but when I tried to take a deep dive I was like "what the fuck is this shit?". Fast forward almost ten years later to new years 2019, I was bored at home and for some reason, started seeing advertisements for their annual run of shows at Madison square garden. That prompted me to go back and listen to the songs I was into in high school, which prompted me to give some more of their stuff another shot, and I found I was more agreeable to it, warts and all. So I order the live stream of night 1 of their new years run...then nights 2, 3, and 4. Next thing I know I'm obsessed with phish. Their music literally got me through the pandemic. I would say I learned to love them and appreciate them. Fortunate to be able to say I saw my first shows, four of them actually, this past summer. Loving these reactions! If you can, get to a show sometime, it's a really great experience. I went stone cold sober and had an absolute blast.

That whole segment of the song where you said "this is pure genius right here" where it starts from a quiet lull and builds up to the climax is essentially improv. That part of the song always starts with that lull and ends with that same climax to "You can feel good about, good about Hood" but the between is just them vibing and improving to link up the two parts of the song. Most of the song that came before is essentially all scripted and largely the same every time. This is how a lot of their songs go when played live. Also you'd be surprised how many fans are sober. In 2021 remember much of the fanbase is older now. A huge segment followed these guys in our college years in the early 90's. So while there are plenty of people still there to party, it isn't the wild hippie drug orgy it is often made out to be.

I’ve seen phish 9 times but they played in my home state of Arkansas this past tour and I sadly had a ticket and didn’t go because it was during the delta surge in Arkansas, but it was the first show phish ever played in Arkansas. When I was in 9th grade back in 2000 I wrote them a letter like 13 year olds are to do, asking them to come play Arkansas. I missed the show that I got tickets to pre pandemic, but it’s alright because I’ve seen them 9 times. Older I got I felt my dreams had already been realized. I hope you too get to experience how fun it is.

Phish has been touring since the 80's. the 18 year old me that went to see phish in 1996, saw 10-12 show runs at a time. traveled all over the country, dropped acid everynight and partied until the sun came up. now there are still to this day thousands of "18 year old me's" out in the phish crowd. however the 42 year old me that still goes to see them today, hits both nights in my city, has a few beers with my friends who have been seeing this band with me for 20+ years, then i get home because my kid has soccer the next day.. there are also thousands of 42 year old me's out there in that crowd as well. so have your wine, have your cheese. we have room for all of that man.

First of all, I really appreciate you checking out Phish, they are woefully underrepresented on reaction channels. I think to really understand the now generational depth of Phish's fan base you should check out some of their older performances. There was a time around '92-'95 when, as has been said elsewhere, they had a real chip on their shoulder and would literally blow your mind. Every night. Every song. This is especially true of Trey who I firmly believe, at the time, was the greatest guitarist alive. The clip below is a song called Divided Sky from 10/31/94 (a monumental show for reasons that can be discussed later) and may be the greatest performance of one of their greatest songs ever. Although the quality is not great and is Trey heavy it is a MUST watch for anyone going down the Phish rabbit hole kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXfXfJyubb6CmLM

Phish is not about observing but participation. I know the feeling of wanting to just enjoy watching others enjoy themselves, like watching a child play with his toys you experience joy through watching another feel joy. Phish is about participating which is why they do so much to involve their audience. I'd wager once there you'd find yourself drawn to boogie with the crowd not content to gaze from afar.

I was deep into Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson, White Zombie and NIN in high school, then at a party I heard Junta, Phish's first album. The summer after I graduated I went with my friends to Lakewood for my first Phish show. From that day in '97 until they took a break in the early 2000's I saw them 27 times. I still love hardcore bands like Between the Buried and Me and will go see the worst Ska bands on the planet, but Phish holds a special place in my heart.

Id disagree and say you can learn to like phish. For me it happened in an instant. Right at the peak of Harry hood 11/20/98 (album = Hampton comes alive) My friend played phish for me incessantly and I never quite got into it then one evening listening to that Harry Hood the peak just flipped something in my mind and then everything changed. Everything my friend had been playing for me that id have described as OK the day before was now pure fire. Don’t know how to explain it. It can happen tho.

What you have to understand about Phish, is that they are the !*ABSOLUTE*! MASTERS of building and releasing tension; their music is designed to make you feel a little uncomfortable and antsy, and build that up, and up, and up, and then let a chord or a drum beat or a keyboard stroke go that just lets all that tension out! That's the phlow! You just sit back and ride it and groove to the majesty of the music! It's absolutely brilliant, the way they do it - I've never seen another band do it as well!

I first saw them in Barre, Vermont in 1991 after being officially introduced to them by friend at UVM in 1990. I had heard them play in 1987 while walking by Nectar's, but they were young, and it sounded like noise to me. I later learned Mike and Trey met while living in the same dorm complex that I lived in (WDW). I suggest newbies listen to 1991-1995 before exploring the more recent stuff.

Another cool phish reaction. I was concerned at first because the band wasn’t as locked-in during the composed parts, but generally if Live Phish releases a version out for free, the jam gets really good. Glad you want to continue your dive into their music. Here are some must-listens: Stash You Enjoy Myself Divided Sky Chalkdust Torture Run Like An Antelope Tweezer Tube A few others that are more “easily digestible” and crowd favorites (mostly) 2001 First Tube Free Character Zero Birds of a Feather

This is probably one of the most chill versions of this song. I've been a fan for a long time, first show was in 96. For me it's looking past the cheesy lyrics and listening to the music. The parts of the song that changes and morphs into a vibe more than a song. Being there brings it all together. The people, lights the music and sometimes some LSD to completely be a part of the experience. The crowed moves the music as much as the band does.

Most of the time, when articles like that are written, I feel like they're really talking more about the process that getting into Phish requires and not the music itself. They're a somewhat goofy band with often goofy lyrics, they've played a ton of music over almost 40 years, and starting with the studio work isn't really the best introduction to the band. It's really hard to know what to start with, what people consider "good," etc. (And even just getting advice about what to listen to can yield vastly different answers depending on the person being asked). The stereotypical view of a phish "phan" doesn't help, often assumed to be exclusively hippies and stoners that live on tour, following the band from place to place. Saw your first phish video, glad you're continuing with them. If you've liked what you've seen so far, you're already becoming one of us. I was introduced to them in high school in spring 2004 and can't/haven't looked back. Welcome to the community! (And for the next song, trust me, go with the Bathtub Gin from 8/17/1997. Widely regarded as the best single thing they've ever done, it showcases how good they are at improvising a jam/song, building it up for a giant, emotional peak. Nobody does it better than them.)

I actually think you can learn to not only like Phish, but to LOVE Phish. I would agree that they are somewhat an acquired taste because they don't fall into any particular musical category but their creative composition and diversity is off the charts and they bring such an amazing vibe to their live shows. I don't think there is any true lover of music who can hate on Phish.

Songs like Reba, Hood, You Enjoy Myself, and Fluffhead are quite challenging as an introduction to Phish- they are epic compositions and not really meant to be immediately accessible. It's awesome that you are diving right into the deep end. Check out some of the more straightforward stuff like Down With Disease, Waste, Birds of a Feather, Chalk Dust Torture, Julius, or Sand. Or some of their gorgeous ballads like Waste, Dirt, or Fast Enough For You, or some of the slightly darker stuff like A Song I Heard the Ocean Sing. They throw down some pretty serious funk sometimes also- lots of jams are super groovy.

One of my favorites Phish songs. I was at this shoooww!! In my opinion Phish and music in general is a totally acquired taste. in college I tried showing friends Phish and the most I saw was appreciation at best and sometimes just benign feelings towards it. Music, no matter what it is, always seems to find YOU. Also there's music to be studied and then music to be enjoyed and studied if it calls to be studied.

Haha I was at this show. In the first set, almost every tune started with that keyboard surround sound swell effect, in the key of each song, so this cheesy effect starts like every tune, and out of it comes bluegrass, or rock, or jazz etc. it was funny. so the ending was a throwback (like great comedians) to the gag of the night. It’s cheesy, but they know that, and they overdid it that night, like they overdo everything ❤️and I love them for it. They will likely never do that surround sound effect again and that’s another thing that makes that night(and every night) special in its own way. I refer to this show as the surround sound night. Harry hood is 4 minutes of composed, rehearsed changes, and then it’s 3 chord make em up after that. It can go anywhere, but it typically stays upbeat and happy, like the outro lyrics. It was awesome how you closed your eyes and vibed out hard during the peak right before the words came back. Perfect. Thanks

You have only reviewed their live “Jam Band” versions of their stuff, but not their original songs, that they wrote and produced for radio play. When you see/hear a live version, they are taking their studio version, and expanding it, through improvisation, making each song into a jam session. You really can’t compare the live “jam sessions” music with their EP recordings. They are different, and a different experience. Check out some of my favorites from their 1994 EP, called, Hoist: Down With Disease Sample In A Jar Wolfman’s Brother

The vibe at a Phish show is much more 'thoughtful' then other shows in my experience. Yeah you still got people wildn' out on various substances, but everyone is there for an experience; and the level of thought and love that the band puts into it just transcends it to something higher then any high. It's magic in its purest form brotha.

A good chunk of the people on the floor really rocking are probably completely sober (on drugs at least), maybe a bit of weed, but definitely not everyone dancing hard is super high like you mentioned. It may seems like they are rocking out insanely hard to jam but for most of this version of hood they are following a structured song that we all know well and love and though they do improvise a lot throughout it, it is still within that well defined structure. It may sound different than other versions but we know whats going on, whats coming, and it makes it easier to dance and rock out like crazy to. I find its definitely harder to dance when not even Phish knows whats coming next, but I manage either way :). Phish has some crazy weird songs that if I look at from the outside are not "dance" songs, the beat is weird, hard to keep your body moving correctly with it. Dancing to Phish can very much be a freedom to express yourself fully. When your in there, there is no judgement, you can do the worm, you can spin in circles waving your arms above you, you can move your limbs randomly through space and time, you could be 13, or 65, it doesn't matter whatever your feeling flies. Phish people are very good at space and even when dancing like crazy we do a pretty dang good job at being aware of our surroundings as well. Someone occasionally bumps into you but In my experience its never been an issue. Glad you enjoyed this. Also I didn't really have to learn to like Phish. I never really heard of them, a friend dragged me to a show in 2014, and that was history. Before that I was mainly just listening to hip hop (I fucking loved and still love Atmosphere). My recommendation for next song is 'Punch You In The Eye'! Also their acapella version of Free Bird, I think is a great perspective of what a lot of fans love about this band. They take the music seriously, but they don't take themselves too seriously and they know how to have a good time.

As someone who pretty much only listened to hip hop before this another thing I really appreciate about the band is that they introduced me to artists like The Who, Bowie, and Ween as they cover songs from all sorts of artists fairly regularly. When I found out about The Who's Quadrophenia and Bowie's Ziggy Stardust my mind was completely blown. I know a lot of older fans probably knew about those bands long before Phish covered them but as a younger fan I'm not sure if I would have ever given Quadrophenia a listen through if it wasn't for Phish's New Years 95 cover of Drowned and Sea and Sand which I also highly recommend checking out.

Happy to see more Phish. Love the band. I think that if you are inclined to like Phish, the more you learn about the band the more you are able to appreciate all of the thought and energy the band puts into what they do and how they push themselves to evolve and not do the predictable thing. This wouldn't have been my 1st choice of a Harry Hood. It's a good version, but this song has had some monster versions that make this seem limited by comparison. One thing notable about this version is the THX deep note played at the very end of the song. At this show, the band played that sound at the end of each song as a kind of joke as well as some silly banter by the guitarist (Trey) introducing songs in a way that isn't typical of the band. I think that unpredictability is what keeps me coming (approaching 25 years). I can't wait to see/hear what will happen next and hoping that songs they play will hit new heights.

I think there is a learning process involved in liking bands with such a diverse portfolio as Phish. It took me wearing out cassette tape copies of Billy Breathes, Hoist, and Story of the Ghost to really begin to get Phish. Ween, Primus, and Grateful Dead are examples of bands that required a certain amount of indoctrination, for me, to appreciate.

It can be like a wine & cheese party, only with phits of phrantic dancing mixed in. But it's all about vibing with the people around you gettin' down to the phunkiest band on Earth 🌎. They also have a true virtuoso on guitar 🎸. Jus sayin' 🤷‍♀️🎶🎶🎵🎧✌️💯

10:23 yes! I usually see them in Atlanta on summer tour so it's at an amphitheater. Set up a blanket on the lawn and just have a good time with good people. Indoors is def a more intense vibe. As a teenager, I was into grunge, thrash, and progressive metal so I got into Phish because of the shredding guitar and the band's virtuosic playing, not the hippie jamband scene. Phans are ready to rage so we rock out man, no doubt!

It’s just a song about where does Harry Hood the New England centric cartoon milk guy goes when you shut your refrigerator door. They came up with the song cuz there was a Hood milk billboard in Burlington Vermont when they were all at UVM. Mr Minor was the landlord of the apartment they could see it from where they’d practice.

Bing AI generated comment. Phish is such a unique and talented band. They have a lot of influences from different genres and styles. Did you know that they teased a song called “Mozambique” in 1998, a year before they officially debuted it? That’s pretty cool!

"Can you learn to like Phish" probably, but you're gonna have to try for a bit and then one day you're gonna wake up with something stuck in your head....and its gonna be Phish. Just wait til you realize that basically every song has heavily, heavily composed sections and that very little of what sticks out to you is actually improvised. I'd suggest, Tube, Possom, First Tube, Maze as some next steps. Save Reba for later. That one is a monster.

Reba is a good example of a misunderstanding of phish. First time you hear it, it sounds chaotic and disjointed. When you hear it more and more, you realize it's intricately organized, and mind blowing in its complexity. Their greatness tends to reveal itself slowly to newcomers.

If you go to a show, you'll rock out like these people. It's contagious and lots of fun. Fun story: my first Phish show I got some acid, and took what I expected to be a mild 1.5 hits about an hour before showtime. Within 20 or 30min I was getting some strong effects, and I knew it was going to be a wild ride. So, the show opens with Fee, which was a song I didn't know. I was self-conscious because I didn't know the song, I was high AF, and there were a ton of people. Then it hit me: everyone is dancing like idiots, and that's basically what life is about. Not caring what other people think (so long as you aren't hurting them) and having fun.

I heard you saying that you have to be really high to dance as hard as they are. Totally can help, but the energy of your phamily dancing around you makes you want to dance too! Just found you but I Love the videos!!! You should check out bathtub gin from the great went. Seamless jam switching between major and mixolydian it’s super groovy!

Growing up as a dead head and classic rock lover, phish was taboo to me. After spending many hours learning phish there is no going back lol. They appeal to all my classical riff needs and keep me on the edge of my seat. Go to one of their concerts you will never see anything else like it ⭕️⭕️⭕️⭕️

I will say, yes there is a stoner vibe. But when you’re at the show it’s a full on rock concert. It’s a cliche, but it really is all about seeing them live. I’m biased, but to me ive really yet to experience something like a Phish show, especially when they’re firing on all cylinders. Controlled chaos, is the way I would describe it
