@andrewford11948 ай бұрын
@@ez8308true but most people outside BD can’t stand their formula each year and regardless of the wins, there’s always “that show/corp” in everyone’s minds that “really won” regardless of what the scores say. To be fair, there are those years for BD when they truly changed the game in DCI with their innovation that deserves the wins they received, but the same old same old is so boring for most of us. 🥱
@rygregory11 ай бұрын
I’ve always interpreted the “cluttered” props as intentional. Sort of like when Matisse is cutting paper up, he would have a bunch of paper clippings all over his workspace (read: hospice bed) until he cleans up and he puts the artwork together. Makes sense to me. 🤷
@chucksilva168611 ай бұрын
Maybe it makes sense cerebrally, but the visual aesthetic overall is noisy and cluttered. Zero goosebump moments. True generally of all top 3 corps show designs.
@FBarnacle11 ай бұрын
@@chucksilva1686 The detail of the pattern is movement The props themselves aren't the main attraction as much as the way they juxtapose the green field, the uniforms, and, yes, the movement. That hits clarity, content, and purpose.

Phantom and Cadets still seem to do the most satisfying shows, prioritizing impact over technical difficulty. Too bad we don't seem to be able to have both anymore. I continue to feel that the deep talent in the top corps is being wasted on displays of technical skill that leave most people rather cold.
@isekai_neo11 ай бұрын
@@chucksilva1686I don’t think anyone is being wasted, they’re enjoying their summer, their talents are definitely showing especially if they’re high up and doing well in scores or crowds love em, and they’re learning more technical skills expanding their books, Repertoire, and life experiences/lessons. Coats does voiceovers: not a big fan of voiceovers BD does voiceovers: OMG THATS TOUGH
@malikneille11 ай бұрын
Not all voiceovers are built the same
@rygregory11 ай бұрын
To me, it seems Bloo more often uses voiceovers for the narration of their show which I think pulls some of the focus from everything else going on on the field. On the other hand, BD uses voiceovers to add texture and thematic aspects which doesn’t necessarily require the viewer to have to listen to each word. I think that’s the difference. Love both shows though!
@WeMissDimebag11 ай бұрын
That feels backwards to me though? If the only thing the voiceover is adding is atmosphere, then it’s kind of superfluous relative to Bloo’s last 2 years where it’s been integral to the theme of the show. Weird that they’d get credit for that but somehow it’s a negative for Bloo. I will say I understand criticism of Coats’ use of narration this year cause there are times where there is very little music happening next to the narration, and it’s purposefully repetitive and sort of grating. I know it’s to reflect the source material but that doesn’t make it sound better. Last year though, I could not understand people being annoyed at the voiceover. It tied the show together and was pretty unobtrusive imo.
@isekai_neo11 ай бұрын
Tbh BD’s voice overs are like small samples not actually narrative voice over through the entire show. It just adds more theme and depth/texture. Both aren’t terrible it’s all preference, but if you’re not a huge fan of VO then coats probably aren’t gonna swing ya boat
@Ralph98111 ай бұрын
@@isekai_neo Narration is great when used well. One good example is the rhythmic use of it on count 3 in Bluecoats show or the brief "a chapel was built" which fits their theme. This is different from the constant stream of it in Cadets show last year.

I really wish I could enjoy the Blue Devils. I respect them for everything that they do, it's undeniable that their staff and performers are some of the best in the game. I just really wish they would take a risk on a show, they always play it so safe. When the blue coats ran Jagged Line after winning the previous year, it was risky. Obviously, it didn't work out for them. But that's ok, because Jagged Line was a really entertaining show. BD has always done what works and, I feel, have rarely ever taken risk. At the end of the day what's clean is clean and that's what matters, we can't judge shows based on how "fun" they are (if we could BD wouldnt have won since 2017). I really just wish BD would put on a show for "Drum Corps Fans" not just "Blue Devils Fans".
@markbrown132411 ай бұрын
I 100% agree with everything you just said. It's hard to argue with the excellence that BD brings to the field, but there is absolutely nothing in this performance that is a "wow" factor for me. I'm like ok you marched well and you played well and now I need a nap...LOL.

What would be great woukd be to have actual DCI judges doing a video like this on every top 15 corps, so we can hear directly from the experts through their ears and eyes. But that would be unlikely to do publicly. It would have to be judges not currently active. Lest an active judge risk making comments that might taint the judging pool. Judges need to be able to keep their dialogue with corps confidential to preserve the integrity of the competitive scoring process.
