Fun story about the bench prop: they stole that bench from a housing location they used that season. After they won, they had a plaque made and attached it to the bottom of the bench before they returned it. To this day, that housing location has that bench with that plaque reading “Featured in Carolina Crown Drum and Bugle Corps’ 1st Place 2013 Finals Performance ‘E=mc^2’”.

The bench is from Gardner-Webb University, where Crown houses for spring training. Also, it wasn’t stolen, it was loaned to the corps by the University.

I marched Crown 11-13, and I can't speak for other years, but 13 was actually the easiest of those three in terms of music and drill. In fact, the whole summer in general was pretty chill, and the staff treated us very well. Perhaps that person was talking about 2012 because that was a difficult year for sure.

Hi there 👋🏼 I was the mello section leader (and the headache from the victory run was me!) and I wanted to throw out there that we were treated really well this year, not that they didn't work us HARD during rehearsals. Even on Finals Day they were cleaning and finding every little speck of dirt they could. 2012 was certainly harder, both musically and visually, for sure. Fun facts! •Both of the female vocalists have THICK southern accents, but put on their "performance voices" for the voiceovers at the beginning and during the percussion movement. •There was more triple tonguing in the show than double tonguing. The on-field brass judge told us we "redefined technique for the activity." We practiced it ENDLESSLY to the point where we were triple tonguing on air during brass block and between reps all day every day. •We scored a perfect 20.0 on finals night, with the only other hornline ever scoring a 20.0 in brass being BD 2004 at quarterfinals. Someone correct me if that's changed since then! •Right after the rotation pyramid, the color guard does a ripple from side 1 to side 2 that is supposed to mirror light going through a prism (think Pink Floyd) which is why there are three lines on side 2. •The member who went into the side 1 "wormhole" had to dye his hair at the end of the season to play the part when they added that ending. He's naturally BRIGHT blonde.

Not sure about my opinion regarding the best brass line ever, but this is certainly in the conversation. They used insane technique with the double and triple-tonguing, the runs were audibly flawless, the blend and balance was off the charts good, they were loud without suffering from degrading quality, and the marching demand while they were doing all this was crazy. Calling any ensemble “the best ever” is always going to left to interpretation of the individual calling them as such, but this is most definitely a horn line that should at the very least be in every discussion ever had on the subject.

Definitely the best Brass ever. However, not the hardest Brass book ever. 2012 and 2014 were both harder books, but not quite as clean.

P.S. - if you were in band/dci growing up..put it on your resume/cv/linkedin - if I continue my path with reviewing applications/resumes, I want to see that. No matter what band, or placement - it's still a high-level activity that requires a lot of skills.

I love hearing your take on these shows. I would vote for watching some of the 80s show that as Meehan suggested when he was on your podcast. Those were the shows that made me a Blue Devils fan when I was in high school. I never knew he was the soloist for Harlem Nocturne in 1987. That was the first year I watched DCI - on PBS! I wore that VHS tape out watching it so much. I would love to hear you guys react to 1986-1993 which I consider some of the best BD shows ever. (Not that I did not absolutely love 2017 and some of the recent shows as well! As an old guy, I am just partial to the old school stuff!) Hope you guys keep posting these - they are great to play while I am working and for a summer when we won't have a BD show. Oh and Alan...on that shirt you had on in the Meehan episode...GO JACKETS!! ;)

Pretty sure he’s talking about the ending color guard choreography and the significance to the show. Basically if you pay attention to both of the props on either end, during the big hit the two main lovers walk through the circle and “pop up” at the other side, and when other members try to cross that destination, they all “die” and I’m pretty sure it’s “love knows no bounds” kind of symbolism.

Also, the Drumline in 2013 was among the worst in the current Crown era. It was a very hard book, but it was just so dirty. You can hear it in the feature that the shots just aren’t together.

Love seeing these reactions. I'd really like to see you guys react to some of the classic shows. If you want a great crowd pleasing show I'd say Phantom 2008 but I'd really like to see a reaction to Star 1991. That corps was so far ahead of its time and the horn line was amazing. Its the oldest show I can think of that feels like modern drum corps.
