Just finished binge-watching this amazing series, and I just have to say it got darker (waaaay darker) in series 2 and 3 compared to the open hilarity of series 1, but it also got much more real about how two person holding onto each other no matter what kind of sh*t they are going through. Series 4 manages to bring a relatively lighter touch to the show and wraps it up in a poignant way

oh really? I just started season 1, so not looking forward to anything dark tbh, but you're saying it gets lighter in s4? I mean tbf they do open pretty much in s1 with the possibility of her having cancer, which is somewhat dark.
