I learned something interesting, branch lining from your “cursed steam locomotive” livestreams. You looked at a Russian locomotive that over 30 mph put diesel into the cylinders to drive it, and you had a meltdown at how cursed the gearing looked. Turns out they had a valid reason to try and build that technology, and it somehow did not involve cocaine like the Pennsylvania and despite being Russia did not involve copious amounts of vodka… turns out, Russia is simply so vast and cold-mostly cold-that no matter how hot they got the firebox, steam locomotives would cool off, lose power, and stall out on flat track. We’re talking colder than whichever shoulder Master Windu had pointing at Anakin levels of cold (so no wonder he tried to warm up in a lava bath). Steam would freeze into ice in the pipes between the throttle and pistons levels of cold. As weird as it sounds, making the cylinders switch from steam to diesel fuel once up at speed in a place and era where you had the fuel resource but not the modern technology of a diesel electric locomotive, it made sense to do-and it almost worked. It’s actually brilliant solution for the time and place that today just seems crazy.

Shhh, they don't know about the gifts of the two scary eras... the spicy boxcars that manifest this train strives for peace, but has a vendetta against a nuclear war-happy county that is currently getting derailed by a smaller country. I support the Russian people, those who defect, but not the government. Actually fuels my fire for strict use of nuclear energy, not being used to terrorize people, but the more reasonable countries need to resolve it themselves, until then. Countries need them for MAD purposes, AKA if fired up on, in self defense, we will level out the destruction to about the same reasonable level and just after we detect launch; before the bombs hit us. Can't say much else about all that because I partially banned myself from that manifest after seeing a note from years ago in middle school. (Battle Hymn perfectly kicks in, as I was typing, explains longer then usual comment). PSA: Just a rail fan that has been pulled by the 4014 with a highball.

Hi, Romanian here. The pantograph is correct. The Contact Area is the entire top "bar" part. The overhead wire is meant to go from one side to another, to spread the wear evenly on the head, otherwise it just becomes a saw. As long as any part of the top of the pantograph is touching, you can have current in the locomotive.

The real valve has seven notches: I - Release & overcharge, II - Running, III - Lap, which is a literal lap, as it doesn't actively maintain brake pipe pressure, IV - Hold, which maintains BP pressure and is closer to what is commonly called "lap", Va - Slow application (to apply brakes more evenly in longer trains), V - Service application, VI - Emergency.

Having previously lived in Siberia from 2010-2012 I can confirm Siberia be crazy. The whistles on Russian locomotives are also crazy - they don't sound like you'd expect from a modern horn. More than once I'd be on a night train during a station stop and hear what I thought was a steam locomotive whistle, rush over to my window out of curiosity, and be disappointed that it was a diesel or electric locomotive passing by. Each locomotive here is a real Russian locomotive, the type you're driving being a very common freight locomotive that I saw all the time. Russians are also very graceful on their feet - even if they're so drunk their eyes have turned yellow because their livers can't keep up with the sheer amount of alcohol in their system. I don't know how to say "Highball" in Russian, but more than likely you could say something like "давай поехали" (davaii poyekhali) which is similar to "Let's go!" specifically for use with traveling in a vehicle.

18:50 On a real loco, the reverser has 3 extra notches in both directions in addition to "M" (power) - "P", "SP" and "S". These select how motos are connected during dynamic braking (in parallel, mixed or in series).
@Hyce7773 ай бұрын
Oh interesting! Manual transition. That's pretty cool. Our locomotives over in the USA modulate that as well but they do it automatically.
@Knsgf3 ай бұрын
@@Hyce777 This manual transition is for dynamic braking only. The dynamic brake on this locomotive is actually regenerative, not theostatic. In order for regen to work properly, the combined EMF of traction mototrs must be kept slightly above supply voltage at all times. At high speeds motors are spinning fast enough to achieve this and are kept in parallel. At low speeds their EMF drops too low, so they are reconnected in series to ensure that total EMF is still above 3000V. P.S. If I recall correctly, earlier diesel electrics in the US also had manual transition levers.

All righty, let's start nitpicking. The red light after flicking "Pantos" at 10:35 is not a "Battery", it's "Safeguards check passed". It verifies that all high-voltage cabinet doors and barriers are closed and securely locked before arming pantographs.

Accent was fine at first, but very quickly got very annoying. Small doses, only, please. Also, that is a VL80 locomotive (VL for Vladimir Lenin, of course), and it is indeed treated as a single locomotive, albeit with two units. Basically, its a pair of A-units, back to back. They CAN be operated singly, but it seems to be very rare (apart from some obscure push-pull local services in Siberia). If you want a single unit, that's what the double-ended VL40 and VL60 are for. It DOES operate in threes, either with an extra cab unit or with a B-unit spliced in the middle. There are also slugs with side-tip dump bodies available (including one that may have some sort of cab/caboose thing). Either way, they can operate with only one pantograph.
@Knsgf3 ай бұрын
The locomotive is VL10, which is DC and whose units cannot be used solo, and not VL80, which is AC. On DC railway usually both pantos are raised to handle high currents.

I have to say the accent took longer than I feared to become truly overcooked. I really shouldn't get like this about it being "distracting", but I think it does detract from the technical discussion (please keep it for the flavor stuff, I'm surely not alone as a fan of Borisisms, Garyschwartzisms (o7)) also I get irrationally stickler with pronunciation, but Russian might not be your wheelhouse so I'll sit down.
