the reason companies can't give away food is because they open themselves up for a lawsuit if a person claims the food made them sick. Since the company was negligent in giving out "expired" food its a case lawyers will take with no less then an eye blink

It's sad that a few bad apples looking for a quick buck ruin it for those in need. This is why food drives can't take anything but boxed or canned goods. It keeps them out of legal trouble. We need a better system for when un-bought items get pulled off the shelf and replaced. We need a way to mark these items on the day they are taken off the shelf. A way to record this all so companies that truly want to help can with ought getting in legal trouble.

Actually it's pretty common for shelters to give poor people nice clothes to help them for job interviews. At least that's how it is where I live
