The car was announced on May 5, 2006, and its first photos were shown on March 20, 2007. Officially, the car was launched on July 4, 2007 in an amount of 250,000 units; it was the largest batch released in the last 10 years, indicating the enormous popularity of the 500 model. Before the start of production, the car was presented in the areas of 30 cities in Italy. These cars are currently being manufactured by the Fiat Polish division in Tychy, Poland, along with the Fiat Panda and the second generation Ford Ka, launched in 2008, as all of these models are assembled on the same platform.
