10 Funny Language Learning Commercials

I put together ten of very funny commercials about learning another language. I hope you enjoy them as I did. Normally I ask the viewers to tell me in the comments which one they like the most to see which commercial is #1. Sadly, I can't do it anymore because the last name I counted deleted its comment, now I don't know which one was last. But judging by the last outcome and by the comments I respond to daily, the winner is the last commercial Budweiser/Bud light, “No speak English” + “Language of Love”.

8. Nintendo DS Japanese TV Commercial (For here or to go) with Nanako Matsushima, perhaps from 2007
9. Berlitz with “Laundromat” from 2005 (Learn another language) by Dennis Liu
10. Babbel with “Undercover Agent” from 2017 starring Divian Ladwa, the "truth serum guy" from Ant Man, as the Undercover Agent - some viewers asked me if it's him, I wasn't sure, so I wrote him and he was so nice to answer and to confirm it: "It is indeed me" - kudos to Divian!

As a European I never had to really learn other languages since just watching cartoons in other languages taught me them. My main language is romanian, I learned Italian from cartoons, French from cartoons but mostly shows, and I learned a good amount of Spanish when I visited Spain for a couple months

I liked #2, but mostly because it featured Beethoven. Seriously, though, this was a splendid compilation! I'd love to have seen a commercial in which someone unwittingly switches from one "foreign" language to another. This happens to me more often than I would like, as when I start speaking in Spanish and wind up speaking (most often) Arabic, but sometimes Russian or Tamil. I guess that wouldn't make for a very good commercial, though. 😞

Here in Brazil we had a tv ad for an english school, and it was pure genius. First, a basic situation where knowing english would come on handy, and the student would nail it by perfectly communicating in english, without even noticing. Then, the punchline and slogan: "Quando você vê, you are speaking". This is genius because the first half of that line is in brazilian portuguese, and mean "when you notice". So the full line points to the school's purpose: teach you english so good it would flow naturally. "When you notice, you are speaking". Brilliant marketing.

Thank you for your story, and you're right! Learning another language not just widens the horizon, it opens a new one. My native language was Czech, today I am also speaking German and English. Every new language helped me not just to understand the new language but also to better understand the first one. It is an adventure!

Can relate to the food ordering thing. When I was in Spain for a month, I spoke a bit of it. Only knew how to order a limited number of stuff. One day I was sick of it, took a risk and randomly ordered something from the menu. Turned out to be half raw calamari :D Another time I ordered a vegetarian pizza and had to tell them what to put on it. Didnt realise have to name everything. Ended up getting a sad looking pizza with only tomatoes and mushrooms. The pizza wasnt cut, but didnt know how to ask them to do it, so had to break it with my hands. :(

With regards to the 9th one, all you really need to do is learn a couple of phrases in that language so you can reply to the people that are speaking in it, making them believe you've understood everything they said.
