the name Aschenbrödel/Aschenputtel is derived from the ancient Greek term Achylopouttoura and meant as much as "ashy woman" which was used by the old Greeks derisively for kitchen maids because those had to work on open fire all the time and therefore those kitchen maids were always ashy. When you know the Cinderella fairytale then this german term Aschenbrödel/Aschenputtel makes total sense.

"Drei Haselnüssel für Aschenbrödel" was filmed in Czech and GDR because the film work had to be canceled in the Czech. To get the film finished, in the GDR continued shooting. Cinderella changes horse in the middle of the film.

The castle in Aschenbrödel is the German castle Moritzburg in the town of Moritzburg close to Dresden. Some roles (stepmother, queen, king...) are played by German actors. It was filmed with some of the dialogue in Czech and some in German, and the remainder dubbed immediately in the other language. It's an actual co-production of Czechoslovakia and East Germany. So no, no "work had do be cancelled". It was a binational effort from the very beginning.

Phil should have explained that while the literal translation of "Schöne Bescherung" is something along the line of "nice gift giving/receiving", this is actual a German idiom. If someone says something is a "Schöne Bescherung" he means that something is quite a mess...which is exactly the right description for the plot of Christmas Vacation.

Fun fact: "Aschenbrödel" is a version of "Aschenputtel" (the german cinderella). Aschenbrödel is an old term for a kichen boy or scullion who is responsible for all the unpleasent and dirty duties; Aschenbrödel literally means "someone who rummage in ash. The "puttel" in "Aschenputtel" is an old hessian term for a dirty, messy girl. Sory for spellingmistakes and stuff....german guy here

But in this Story there are the 3 Haselnuts who are giving her the dresses, which are helping her to go to the dance in which she and the Prince are falling in Love 🥰 sorry for my spelling

I deny the notion that Home alone is the most popular in Germany. That is CLEARLY either Der kleine Lord or Drei Nüsse für Aschenbrödel...most likely the latter. I have worked in hotels for decades. Back in the days when we offered a selection of movies to watch for the guests we would have a display on the counter with the movies of the month. Some movies would have their titles translated from English to Danish. I didn't think much of it, untill we had "Trading Places" with Eddie Murphy on the list. It does have a Christmas theme in it. :-) It was listed with the Danish title "Bossen og Bumsen", which again in English means something like"The Boss and The Bum". A German guest came up to the counter and studied the videos listed in silence, untill he suddenly bursted out: "Bossen und Bumsen"?"" It was obvious he thought it was a porn movie.

I'd highly recommend Aubrey and Deana to give "Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel" a try when it pops up on TV or in the Mediathek. It's really THE christmas movie for german women (beautiful locations and extraordinary costumes plus that Cinderella story). It was shot in the 70s in Czechoslovokia in collaboration with the GDR film studio DEFA and definitely has a vintage vibe, but that's also what makes it somewhat more "realistic" compared to Disney adaptions. BTW: Kudos to the christmas tree, the pyramid and the "Räuchermännchen", you really nailed the typical german "Weihnachts-Wohnung", ;)

@@PassportTwo There is no excuse NOT to do it...it's not only on Netflix, it is pretty much impossible to have the TV running around Christmas on the public broadcaster without stumbling over it. I think the record for it is something around 61 showings. It's basically the quintessential German Christmas movie, I was kind of floored that Phil apparently has never seen it. Btw, Netflix just dropped the most German of Christmas TV shows with "ÜberWeihnachten" (Over Christmas). It really portrays the typical "German" Christmas spot on.

Drei Haselnüsse für Aschenbrödel - why does it have a different story than the fairytale? It is based on a re-write by Božena Němcová, a Czech writer (1820-1862). Was it planned as a christmas movie? No. The story was planned to play in summer, but the film company DEFA insisted to shoot it in winter and on set in Bohemia (shooting the forest scenes and the grange where Aschenbrödel lives) they had an early onset of winter with the huge loads of snow we see in the movie. For the exterior scenes in Saxony (Schloss Moritzburg near Dresden) they had to use artificial snow to make it look like winter.

@@PassportTwo To take this apart: This is one of the most widespread fairy tales in Europe, and there are different versions of it in different part of it. In the Grimm Version of the Fairy tale, the character is called "Aschenputtel". in the Bechstein version, she is called "Aschenbrödel". Both stories are very similiar, and the movie in question isn't based on either of them, but on a Czech version of the story. I guess they picked "Aschenbrödel" für the translation instead of "Aschenputtel" because the Grimm version is the most famous one, so it was easier to deconnect this version by using the Bechstein name. What is known in the US, though, is mostly the version of Perrault, where the character is named Cendrillion or in english, Cinderella. That's the one the Disney movie is based on. So they used the known name "Cinderella". In this case though, the German translation is the correct one, and the American one is the iffy one. The movie is great btw, still my favourite take on the story (sorry Disney).

I think the title "Schöne Bescherung" is really good, because the word "Bescherung" can relate to the giving of the christmas presents, but also can mean "unpleasant surprise" which is emphasized by the word "schöne". So it describes on one side the time in which the movie is set (around christmas) and it tells, that there are waiting some unpleasant surprises for the main character.

That was a great video! There are actually two meanings in German for „eine schöne Bescherung“. One is what Phil explained and the other one is a saying when everything goes wrong. And about the movie „Elf“: I think it is not as popular in Germany because in the German Christmas Tradition there are no Elfs. Depending on where you live in Germany there is the „Weihnachtsmann“ or the „Christkind“ but neither have Elfs working for them. If German people know about them that‘s usually from watching American movies 😀 One of my all time favorite Christmas movies is While you were sleeping. Haha, my sister has watched this so often, she can sync it line by line. :D Yeah, that is a huge classic. All three parts get aired every single Christmas. It was so popular, it forced the main act to move to France, because she couldn't get any other type of roles afterwards. Still a great movie, but I doubt it was ever dubbed to English. Other than Sound of Music it's probably too specific to Austrian/German history. That queen was quite the rebel, even had an anchor tattoo! And suffered dearly thanks to royal etiquette.

Funniest part about Die Hard is that in the German dubbings the terrorists were portrayed as Irish with the lead character being called Jack (instead of Hans) Gruber. Then in the dubbing of the 3rd movie, he became Hans Gruber´s German brother, and everybody got confused. This was in obviously the late 80s/mid 90s, when Germans didn´t watch as many orginial movies yet.

My christmas-movie is (of course) "Die Hard" ... no just kidding... but for real, I love watching "The Santa Clause" with Tim Allen and "Als der Weihnachtsmann vom Himmel fiel" (from 2011) --- Aschenbrödel (same as Aschenputtel) is someone who's digging in ash. It was used mostly for scullions but in this particular case it's just the German name for Cinderella

The title of my favourite christmas movie is easy to be translated, for it´s simply called "Bad Santa" in Germany as well as in the english speaking countries. Billy Bob Thornton simply rules. "Bescherung" is used as an idiom if something oopsy has happened (for example, a glass of milk has been spilled on the table). That´s what we call "Schöne Bescherung" ("What a mess...")

"It's A Wonderful Life" with Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed is an old time classic American Christmas movie filmed in black in white, unless you have seen a colorized version of it. It's shown on television every year along with another classic "Miracle on 34th Street" also in black and white and a colorized version. There have been remakes of both of those classics in color with different actors for a more modern take on a classic. The stories are mostly the same but minor changes are made to bring them up to date.

'Eine schöne Bescherung' is a German expression and means something like: 'What a disaster'. As in, right before Xmas our electricity went out when we had the house full of people. 'was fuer Eine Bescherung!' Yes, it can also mean the gift giving on Christmas Eve, but the title of the movie plays on exactly this double meaning of the German word Bescherung, which can be either a gift that is presented or a major headache, depending on the situation.
