WEEKEND WOGAN 10th ANNIVERSARY SERIES - Show 14/35
12.47pm, live on BBC Radio 2 on Sunday, 20 June 2010... ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ written by the legend, Willie Nelson.
What kind of ridiculously awesome, broodingly spellbinding, gut-wrenchingly honest, deeply powerful and painful song is this? I love it so much. It really gets to me. Many of us have been the protagonist portrayed in this extraordinary Willie Nelson American classic and if you, like me, are one of those people, these lyrics will cut right into you.
This is another song that I had had on my ‘songs to do one day’ list and ‘Weekend Wogan’ was the perfect platform to finally tick it off that list. Knowing it was coming up, I had spent a few weeks absorbing as many versions as possible and desperately trying to find a version by Ray Charles who I was convinced had done the version that I was hearing in my head and imagining myself doing on the show. I never found a Ray Charles version and so I created my own but with a ‘tip of the hat’ to Ray’s influence on me.
And like Neil Diamond’s ‘And The Grass Won’t Pay No Mind’ (which I had performed in the first series), ‘Funny How Time Slips Away’ was another song that Terry obviously also loved and would affectionately refer back to in our weekly pre-show chats for the remainder of the year.
This is in my Top 5 of personal favourite live performances I gave on BBC Radio 2 in 2010. Enjoy the stellar performance given here by my band and singers. ❤️
