One time I was at a zoo, and I heard a baby crying. I followed the sound and it turns out it was a parrot, just like the one in the video, except it was a different color. When I went up to the bird it made a laughing sound and said "Haha, fooled you!"

Nappa coppenhagen Sorry. So much of this video is super sweet. But I'm a bird lover and I believe in playgyms, not cages.....birds live to fly....mine hang out on top of their cage and in their play area, then go in to their cage to snooze when it gets dark. Birds get angry and sad just like people...I don't know if you have lived with a bird but they are just as cool as dogs or cats...very very very smart little souls.

Several months ago there was a story on the internet about a parrot that was reported stolen or missing. Many months had passed, and somehow the parrot and its original owner were reunited.However, when it returned, it was speaking Spanish. It did not speak Spanish before it disappeared. Hilarious story.

I love parrots. I think however not just anyone should go out and buy one. You need to think how long they live and could very well out live you. They are like a 2 yr old and need to have someone around. The larger parrots such as a Macaw or Cockatoo are beautiful, but can be destructive to your home if they don't have their own chew toys. Very intelligent are they and can get bored and depressed if not challenging them and giving them the attention they need.

Yeah, parrots are a lifetime commitment. I don't own one (and never plan to), but they really are like caring for a toddler, from what I've heard. And they can live for 65+ yrs, so you really need to do your research if you think you want one.

Christina H This is true in the case of large parrots. However, smaller parrots, like budgies, lovebirds, parrotlets, lorikeets, quakers, and conures don't live as long and aren't very destructive. Some are known to be okay living by themselves. However, please do your research before adopting any animal. A lot of what I listed live longer than 15 years, and even if they don't, it's not an excuse to treat them any lesser than the biggest, most expensive african grey. They're all great birds and deserve great homes. I would know, as I own a budgie and a green cheek conure, and I used to own a peach-faced lovebird.

I once read about this lady that bought a second hand parrot and it started coughing so she took it to the vets. They found nothing wrong with it but it carried on coughing. Then the lady remembered that the parrot had previously lived in a nursing home and in his time had learnt a 'whole host of geriatric noises' including a full range of coughs but she said his smokers cough was the best.

I had a parrot in Bolivia when I was 9 and I was very close to the bird, and I can say it was one of the best relationships I ever had with a living being. She would climb from the bottom of my pants all the way to my shirt and stay there all day (sadly not like a pirate on my shoulder). She would sleep under my bed and in the morning she would climb up and start walking on top of me because she was hungry and then I fed her papayas and bananas. Every time I would play with my toys she would want to take part in some sort of way, it was enough for her to climb onto a firetruck and ride around like if she was the boss. When I would pet her she would extend her leg as if to shake my hand, but most of the time she just wanted to get on my finger so that I would take her to my shirt, her favorite place to be. It still amazes me how much things she could do with her feet and how communicative she was with her beak, sometimes she would bite me softly when she wanted to get her head scratched. She had a cage but it didn't matter because she could open it by herself... these creatures are extremely smart and learn so quickly. Sadly I had to move to another country so when the flocks of parrots were flying in the sky, it was time to say goodbye. I was very sad to let her go, but it was better for her to be free than with someone that didn't love her as much as I did. It has been more than 15 years since I had her and I still wonder what happened to her, how she would react if she saw me... Many people are against keeping a wild animal like this, depriving it from its freedom and blah blah. In some way I agree but this doesn't stop the fact that, it was one awesome summer for my parrot and me. Lorena was her name and I loved her and she loved me.

I have a sun conure (just like the orange, yellow and green one on the back of the chair chasing a laser) and she is good friend. There are no wild flocks of parrots here in Canada so she's quite alone - we humans are her only companions. And I could not get rid of her even if I wanted to - she demands constant attention. In the summer she flies outside and sits in our maple tree, enjoying the sun and the breeze. If I try to leave her alone there (so I can go inside and do some work) she squawks and shrieks until I return. She just wants company. When she's ready to come home she flies back and lands on my shoulder. If I climb the same tree she'll hop over to my branch and sit with me. If I climb another tree she'll fly over to visit. I guess she thinks I'm a big clumsy parrot. She always keeps an eye out for predators overhead and will let out a loud scream if she see one. She can tell the difference between various bird species and is not afraid of non-predators. I think she recognizes them by the shape of their beak, because she is easily upset by hook-shaped objects. One day a crow landed in her tree and rested for a while, looking her over. The crow had probably never seen such a colourful bird. My bird sat there calmly, preening her own feathers. After a few minutes the crow flew off. Another time a hawk chased her, but she was able to hide in her tree, protected by the dense foliage. Her instincts serve her well even though she was probably raised in captivity by a breeder.

When I was a kid there was a mall pet shop that had this enormous red/multicolored parrot. Bird was pretty much infamous, and had the most foul mouth believable. Someone finally stole it. Might still be alive, and hope it was frankly a good home.

Birds are wonderful, but beware you research before you consider making one a pet for yourself. The larger parrots live a very long time and even the cockatiels can be noisy enough to be heard by your neighbors. Loved mine./

+YourAnjl : Yeah, people need to read before deciding if they are up to the task to care for a bird. Knowing the downsides in advance lessen the likelyhood you pick a pet you were not willing to care for in the long run. Had 3 birds, two of them adopted from families that could not care for them anymore. (One elderly lady that had to leave her house, one family with a young kid and both parents working full time.) Consider adopting from a shelter or private owners instead of going to the petshop.

YES. A good bird owner will discourage most people from getting one. I love my birds but I don't think most people would be willing to take on how much work, love, and attention they need, which is why they're re-homed so often. They're wild animals, and probably shouldn't be pets. But if you can rescue and care for one, giving it a good, fulfilling life, then they're so worth it.
