"I guess I just got caught up in the excitement of the game" was, I think, a big moment for Nate, who likely realized many of those times that Ted "snubbed" him in Season 2 were likely not personal on Ted's part - he was just caught up in the excitement too. Meaning Nate owed him even MORE of an apology.
@karmacean Жыл бұрын
I think the most important thing about Nate, characters like him, and the "hurt people hurt people" excuse in general is that that I see that phrase as less of an excuse and more of a *reason*, which I think is always important to differentiate. People's actions can have reasons, some more understandable than others, but those reasons don't have to be excuses. Now, if someone tries to use those reasons as an excuse, that's a different story. But I think we as a society (lol) need to re-learn the important difference between an excuse and reasoning, especially when it comes to children.
@ulfsam-mule-son9726 Жыл бұрын
I think you are way off base. Empathy and understanding are one of the most important parts of determining how we react to people's behavior. Just like you wouldn't take it personally if a friend snapped at you unfairly the day their pet died, how we react to 2 different people who have done the same "not on" thing will be different if we understand what lies behind their actions. It isn't making excuses to understand there is a difference between someone with a history of DUI's and whose bllood alcohol was 1.7 causing a car accident and someone with a spotless driving record who was stung by a wasp while driving having caused the exact same accident. Being curious (and not judgmental) enough to find out that the driver was stung by a wasp while driving is not making excuses, but it certainly should mitigate our response/the punishment.
@karmacean Жыл бұрын
@@ulfsam-mule-son9726 I don't know how what you said is different from what I said or how I was off base. My point was that the reason behind someone's actions shouldn't be taken as an excuse, a word which normally has negative connotations. For example, someone having a bad day becasytheir pet passed away is a perfectly valid reason for them to snap at someone, but it is not an excuse to treat someone poorly. If that makes sense.
@mr.stuffdoer8483 Жыл бұрын
I also think that that reasoning tends to be for characters who are capable of redemption. If you hurt people for the sake of hurting them, there’s not really much redemption to be had unless you put in an ungodly level of effort, which typically requires some type of major catalyst to set things in motion. If you’ve been emotionally or physically devastated in the past, the hurt you inflict on others is likely a coping mechanism that can be changed.
@ulfsam-mule-son9726 Жыл бұрын
@@karmacean I think I see what you mean, but it sounds (sounded) very much like boiler-plate political rhetoric form from the that is often used to complain when poor non-white folks are not burned at the stake for minor crimes, so I may have reacted emotionally. I just feel that understanding is an important part of the process and it felt like your comment was implying that it was not and punishment should be an eye-for-an-eye-Gold-Cloaks-under-Daemon-Targaryen dort of thing, mitigation be damned. If I misconstrued your meaning then I offer you my sincere apology, sir.
@karmacean Жыл бұрын
@@ulfsam-mule-son9726 I think I see where you may have gotten that, but rest assured that was not what I meant in the slightest. My comment comes from my perspective as an autistic person who has had many social difficulties throughout my life. Often times I may try to explain my actions and words through the lens of my disorder, but sometimes people think I'm trying to make an "excuse" for myself. For example, I react poorly when my mother changes plans at the last minute, and I lash out. After I've cooled off, I apologize and explain that my reaction stems from how my brain functions differently. She says "you're using your autism as an excuse", but that would only be true if I was trying to say my actions were *justified* because of my disorder. In reality, I only wanted to explain where the origin of my reaction stems from - to give a reason as opposed to an excuse so that my mom can understand me better. A mental disorder is never an excuse for treating someone poorly, but it is very much a valid reason. Some people's reasons have stronger ground than others, but those reasons only become excuses when they are used to lighten the blame for an action. I hope I've explained myself a bit better! Edit: To use Nate as an example: he had very solid reasons for his actions and words, but those reasons are not excuses. However, because Ted understands Nate's reasoning without being told, he is able to forgive Nate easily. Nate still has to apologize, however, because as legitimate as his reasons were, they were not *excuses* for his poor treatment of those around him.

This is the point where we find out the real villain of the show. When Rebecca told Rupert, "Bex deserves better", I wanted to cheer. She doesn't think of Bex as the enemy, just another potential victim of Rupert's selfishness. Rebecca is the best. I think that Rupert is the only wholly toxic person in the show (...well, okay, Shandy too...) Doctor Jake infuriates me; I think he deserves to lose his license, and I can't help thinking that the advice he gave in therapy was designed to get Ted out of the way so that he could move in on Michelle.

Ted Lasso is filled with moments where I think "what the hell are they doing? They are messing with a perfect show!" Thing for me with "Dr. Jacob" is that _Michelle was seeing him alone first,_ before she had Ted go with her - which strongly hints that they were having an affair behind Ted's back. Also, Julie Andrews' best role was Queen Guinevere in _Camelot_ - especially given how she'd adjust her singing style to go well with both Robert Goulet (who was already famous as a professional singer) and Richard Burton (who struggled to carry a tune), whichever the scene required.

After watching THIS content on Ted season 2 you can really see why Nate acted the way he did. This is someone who knows…loads about Richmond. He knows how to pack the bus, how to treat the grass and even tactics, but he’s never been listened to. Ted comes along and listens, and that lifted Nate up. But in season 2 he felt, rightly or wrongly he was getting pushed back and replaced and belittled. By Higgins when he had to share an office. By Roy when he came in to coach. By Ted when he laughed at Nate when he said Isaac needed a big dog to talk to him. By Jan with his comments about his suit (I think that’s his name) By his dad constantly. By Will when he said “this the suit Ted bought you”. By himself when he said Wonder Kid but meant Wunderkind. And by himself again when he kissed Keeley. He kept feeling that no matter how good it got for him it was all gonna be taken away and no-one respected him. Add to that when he did make mistakes it was rarely called out and so toxic behaviour just got worse. All these things caused Nate’s decline. I’m not excusing it, but it’s important we understand it:

Dr. Jacob situation is there to add some wrinkles to relationships and as they say is "borderline unethical", not "purely". They haven't seen him for over a year and half so it isn't a current or even recent client. They actually did the research on it and what the policies are and specifically made it beyond the date specified in the profession in some areas while leaving it as sketchy as it still early and doesn't meet it in all areas. And it makes sense she didn't tell Ted as she didn't seek it out and you don't want to tell you ex about everyone you might date until you are sure it is something. And then when it was, it likely became a difficult conversation that she knew she needed to have but was avoiding, as humans do, waiting for the "right time".

The whole Jake and Michelle thing so beyond messed up. He was HER therapist, and then said he thought they both needed therapy so became the couple's therapist. That's red flag number 1. An individual's therapist shouldn't become a therapist to the SO or become a couples therapist because their neutrality has been compromised. THEN, he is the one that told Ted to give Michelle space. So HE encouraged Ted to move away, giving him what he needed to slide in. This is a massive ethics violation and Jake should have his counseling license revoked. I hate that Sas says "that's borderline an ethics violation" NO, IT IS A MASSIVE ETHICS VIOLATION AND JAKE SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO TAKE ON PATIENTS TO MANIPULATE! I'm glad you addressed the HUGE issues with the whole thing in your talk. And here is the thing about him reminding me of Ted... An easily overlooked bit that I really loved in episode 4 was that last moment after Ted hangs up on his call from Michelle. We see how Michelle reacts to him confronting her with a problem he had with her. The look on her face doesn't look like she embarrassed or upset, it looks like she's just a little bit happy and proud of Ted. Presumably a big part of the problem in their relationship was the way Ted avoided problems rather than acknowledging and dealing with them. Seeing him finally confront a problem directly, specifically one with her, was almost certainly something she'd long wished for. Even if she's no longer in love with him, it's clear that she still cares about him, and is happy and proud to see him getting better.

I think a lot of people misread Nate. He didn't hear the person who spoke to him on the escalator in Epsode 1of this season because he was encased in his own little bubble (something very common to those with very low self-esteem). He was so consumed by his own fears and self-doubt that he couldn't hear anyone except the thoughts in his own head. The spitting at his reflection in the mirror is self-loathing and his way of attacking the weak person he sees there-essentially bullying himself as a means of feeling more powerful. That is what many bullies are-people with extremely low self-esteem who attack others to gain validation from others. When Nate feels the validation he received from Ted waning, he seeks out validation from others, and gets it from the worst possible source-Rupert. His insecurity and all the preceived slights he feels turns to fear, then anger, and then he lashes out. Nate has feeling of such low self-worth that any slight, no matter how minor and unintentional, is seen as an attack. For example, his complaint about not seeing his gift to Ted-the photograph-in Ted's office is taken by Nate to mean that Ted didn't care about it... meaning that Ted really didn't care about Nate... meaning his job isn't secure and he's probably being laughed at behind his back. You get a glimpse of this kind of spiral-descent thinking (common to those with self-esteem issues) in episode 7 of the first season. Ted asks Nate for his opinions on the team and Nate refuses to say anything. When Ted asks why, Nate tells Ted that he fears Ted won't like his idea...and it would make Ted hate him and fire him...and he'd have to move back home and his parents would be ashamed of him...then everyone finds out and laughs at him until his face melts off. Even though he is seeking to appear powerful, inside he is clearly still scared and feels unworthy of it. Now, none of this justifies his horrible treatment of others or the many petty and dispicable actions he has taken, but it does explain them. Nate was in as desperate a need of Dr. Fieldstone's services as Ted, but he didn't get that help.

Comparing this to Fonzie jumping a shark on water skis is insane, this show is grounded and based off real life events in professional football

I always appreciated (I think there is a nice subtle joke) with using Prisencolinensinainciusol during the Zava montage. An Italian saying gibberish for the delight of English speakers...who aren't really paying attention to what is actually being said.

I know you think the Zava storyline jumped the shark but hes based on a very real player. Idk if youd be interested but reacting to some Zlatan videos might be fun

So happy to see you run through these episodes so I don't have to wait a week between posts (although ... where's Firefly?). A lot to happen coming up and I'm excited and sad to see the final episode (just like I am with "Barry" that I'm about to watch the series finale). Thanks for doing this compressed set of reactions!

Tom Brady join the buccaneers who were bad and won the Super Bowl with them. So the zava thing is very realistic

If you recall, Dr Jacob was initially Michelle’s therapist. Then he became their marriage therapist (already a bad situation, you need a neutral party). It is INCREDIBLY unethical from start to finish.

Fun detail is dat Zava is based on Zlatan Ibrahimović, a Swedish striker with a rather extravagant personality.

While it’s not common that a single player can have such a big impact the reality is in pro sport the difference between the best the average competitor is actually very small and it’s often less about skill and rather being the mental aspect. So not only can the right player help a team score or prevent a goal that previously they conceded but they can also cause other players to believe in themselves more and also raise their effort. To highlight this in the 2014/15 season Leicester City we’re woeful for most of it, after 29 games in the 38 game season they had 19 points and were 7 points behind 2nd from bottom (the bottom 3 go down) but they managed to pick up 23 points in the remaining games to avoid relegation. The next season with a new Manager and a couple of key signings they ended up winning the whole Premier League. They largely remained a top 8 side after this including last season ending 8th of the 20 teams. However the season that’s just ended with very limited changes to the squad they came 18th out of 20 and were relegated. That whole thing highlights just how much a small thing can raise the level of the whole team.

Led Tasso is Ted Lasso's evil alter ego. Perhaps Nate "The Great" is going through his evil alter ego phase. Nate "The Snake" because he *spits* venom.

So i never thought Zava jumped the shark, the main thing with their soccer league is it's rated by goals not exactly winning games. So the more goals you score a season the better your team is ranked. Winning games is always good however points help your standing so you dont get knocked down a league

I think that the "hurt people hurt people" phrase isn't an excuse, but an explanation for their behavior. You can still call them an a-hole. Good couple episodes and there is a glimmer of hope for Nate. Beard and Roy going behind Ted's back and showing the video just shows that they have a lot to learn about coaching. Jade is an enigma, wrapped in a mystery. Rebecca's visit to the psychic was interesting. The green matchbook was spooky... Jamie's development is really good and how he turned that thing on Beard with "ironic" vs "hypocritical". What will Trent do with the revelation of Colin's sexuality?? Stay tuned viewers. As always, great reaction and analysis.

Zava is an over-the-top character & is completely based on an over-the-top soccer player that others have named. (mostly because I cannot spell his name from memory) But I find it done with great comedic timing. I think this season didn't have Bill Lawrence steering the show and the first half of the season it shows. It's pretty uneven. Although I do think it gets back on track from "Sunflowers" until the end.

48:55 - I think there might be a little more to this scene than what's immediately obvious. We all know that Rupert is a complete asshole -- we've known that since the first time we met the character. Remember how they were having that fundraiser, auctioning off footballers for one-time dates. They even hired a live musician to play, who suddenly cancelled the day of the event. Ted immediately calls Rupert out, "If you could just send a text asking them to come, you just as easily could've told them not to come, right?" So Rebecca, Higgins, and Ted just hire that street busker "all the way from...outside," and when he starts playing, the blows the roof of the joint, and it's a party. They really showed Rupert, didn't they? Come back to THIS scene at 48:55, except... listen to the music playing in the background. It kind of sounds like THAT guy, which says something about the kind of guy Rupert is. After that fundraiser with the wildly talented musician, Rupert could have bought that dude out immediately with the intention to weaponize that talent and that admiration, just to be petty as fuck toward Rebecca.

Since it's been about 2 years since Jacob was their therapist, I don't know if it's actually unethical, but it does a great job of setting back Ted and bring up his insecurities about how it all went down. I'm just glad he was immediatly seeking Sharon's guidance. The interaction between Ted and Jacob was funny but my main concern is what would be *Ted's bone to pick* with the former president, and I don't know why more people don't notice that since it's unprecedented. 😂
