Fly tying instructions for a fur caddis larva nymph. Sometimes called a green rock worm, this pattern imitates the non-swimming, drifting caddis larva found in any water where caddis hatch. This easy-to-tie trout pattern was tied from Dave Hughes' 2018 edition of "Essential Trout Flies."
Hook: #12-16 curved
Bead: tungsten or brass to match hook size
Thread: Brown
Body: Olive or green fur, mixed with sparkle yarn or ice dub
Abdomen: Hare's mask or darker dubbing
Savage Flies is a project (named after one of my homewaters, the Savage River in Western Maryland, US). I've been trout fishing for many years but have only been tying for the last couple and am learning more every week. If you have any pointers on techniques that would help, I would love to hear them in the comments.

Thank you Matt. Looks pretty straight forward to tie. It appears the biggest hurdle is dealing with the small size. Nicely done Sir.

Thanks Jeff! I just finished tomorrow's video. I think you're going to like it. It's called the Apache Lady and has a peacock herl body, but with a red glass bead in the middle. It's pretty unique. :-)

Thanks! Although if you're not a fly tier, I'm sure videos of it would be extremely boring!

@@SavageFlies Only thing around here I would use a fly for would be perch....well maybe crappie, never tried it for that. Too hot here in north Texas for trout. Although the fish & game does stock a few area city ponds during the winter months. Either way, still interesting to watch at least a couple of times :-). Really surprised your channel isn't bigger. Seems you have one particular niche. That should be a big plus!

Thanks Brandon! I just started it a few months ago so I'm hoping to keep the channel growing. I guess it takes a while!

@@SavageFlies yes it can take quiet a long time. Like they say, it's not a sprint, it is more like a marathon. I think as long as you do it for the right reasons, because you enjoy it, and not to make a quick buck, you will be successful regardless of your subscriber count. But what do I know :-)

nicely done. I love to fish the Saage but I don't get west as often as I would like. I have to make do with the Gunpowder.

Thanks Alan. I get to the Gunpowder a few times a year. I usually do better numbers-wise on the GP, but for bigger fish, I think the Savage is one of the better rivers around. A 15-18 incher on the Savage isn't uncommon. If I got an 18-incher on the Gunpowder, I'd be celebrating for weeks. :-)

@@SavageFlies you and me both! Ive seen them but they are hard to catch. Favorite spot on the Savage? Mine is probably teh PHD pool

Ahhh... the PhD pool. I've never caught a thing there but have stripped more than a few streamers in the deepest part. I've done better in the 7x flat-- not a lot of fish, but one very nice one a couple years ago. My most productive stretch is actually right when you step in the water at the Allegheny bridge parking area. My two biggest fish last year were right there under the over-hanging bushes, both 18+. And a couple of nice ones there this year. I've heard of some nice fish just above the lumber yard as soon as you turn onto Savage River Road but haven't tried there yet. Lots of water still to explore!
