I’ve never driven one but I’ve always liked these based on looks alone. The modern Jaguars leave me cold as they look so similar to everything else. Shockingly when these were new I would see some of them cruising around south Florida with padded vinyl roofs, 2 tone paint and white wall tires. I recently came across a v6 manual in a junk yard. I was stunned. I can’t imagine they sold many of those on this side of the pond!

These are seriously under-rated cars. I ordered one new in 1998, but changed my mind and cancelled. There was quite a long waiting list, so it did excite people at the time. In 2010 I bought a 2003 3.0 litre car, for only £2,600, and it was absolutely wonderful! Very quick when engine revved hard, as it had 240bhp. The ride is comfortable, and it seems to glide along, with a wonderfully fluid feel that I've not experienced in rival BMW or Mercs. Future classics I think. Thanks for the video review, very interesting. Looks are always in the eyes of the beholder, but I agree with you that S-types look better now than they used to when new.

great lively commentary, big ups. I absolutely must draw your attention to the one thing that everyone says about the engine though...its being 'Ford-sourced' etcetc. The V6 was originally a Porsche design; the ladder block, as per the 928's V8. It then passed to Cosworth. At which point the S Type project, under Ford. The whole of the valvetrain is Jaguar; including the variable intake manifold and variable valve timing, which is still as trick as they come without forced induction. Truly a high-bred motor, le pur sang as close as we get these days. Yes, I've got an S Type; 3.0 ltr, manual. The looks, the drive...well, say no more.....though that over used word, 'iconic', does spring to mind.

The X202 S-Type, released for 2002 , was heavily reengineered from the Ford DEW platform and has virtually nothing interchangable with the Lincoln LS - although many parts are shared with most other contemporary Jaguars e.g. suspension control arms introduced on S-Type were shared by X350 XJ and X150 XK models. This means that the 2002-onwards S-Type feels (and indeed fundamentally is) nothing like the Lincoln LS. It's just an evolutionary artifact used to criticise the S-Type by people who have never driven an X202. The X202 is a wonderfully balanced chassis and is very capable. Indeed it's still the underpinnings of the spectacularly capable XFR-S - which I also owned. The only dynamic advantage the E39 BMW 5 series had over the S-Type R was the option of a manual gearbox. Even then not everyone would agree that was an advantage in an executive performance saloon. Interior wise, you may enjoy the S-Type's leather e.g. on the back of the front seats so the rear passengers see leather rather than plastic seatbacks like the 5-series had resembling, which looks more Mk.4 Ford Escort than it does luxury saloon.

I think e39 had limited slip that STR didn't have. Also m5 suspension was stiffer as it was faster around track. I however think s type is superior to bmw on road comfort / performance and also reliability is suprsingly superior on my s type vs my bmw e92 coupe that broke too often.

Having had 3 I know a thing or two about them. I have a 2.7 version at the moment (Diesel, 2005). Check Sills as they rot like crazy under the sills, cam belts, and Gearbox service which a lot of owners miss. Its not a sealed box so factor in 4-500 quid if there is no history of gearbox being serviced. Make sure you have a GOOD battery on them, otherwise the electrics go haywire! The EPB will stick on etc.

My Dad bought a brand new 3.0SE in 2001 because he had always promised himself a Jag. It was a lovely car but towards the end it cost an absolutely fortune to try & keep it on the road. The Autobox had to be rebuilt, a new torque converter, the diff had to be changed, new fuel tank are just some of the things I remember. He spent around 6 or 7 grand on it in the last couple years but gave up & scrapped it in 2011 after the rust took hold. It did have 160000 miles on the clock to fair but I don’t think it was built all that well. Great video as always 👍🏻

The earlier models dash and rear lights take styling cues from the Spitfire. The round bits in the rear lights match the RAF circle on the Spitfire and the dashboard vents are designed to look like the Spitfire wings. It's because the car was made at the Castle Bromwich aircraft factory where the Spitfire was made. I think you got a commemorative book with the first ones sold.

I got a beautiful facelift example fully loaded 6 speed auto (believe it or not completely rot free including sills) for the princely sum of £300 for my elderly father as my work colleague went and bought a new Jaguar and they offered him nothing on a trade in and he said the first person with £300 could have the big cat. Ours was completely reliable but it did get the odd error code due to only getting used once a week to go to the shops as once the battery gets a bit low it can throw the odd engine management light but wish he never sold it as it was a great waft wagon.

This was indeed a platform share with the Lincoln LS, designed by Coventry kid Gerry McGovern (MGF) who went on to head the Lincoln Division itself. The Jaguar design Centre at Whitley is about 2 miles from the Rover design center at Canley, both are alongside the A45 in Coventry. The Rover 75 was the last car designed at Canley which was redeveloped and is now a Sainsbury's car park. Great video as always. 🚘🛣🚦

I was fortunate to own a 2004 4.2 (naturally aspirated) S Type for the past four years (sadly, redundancy, lockdown, etc, meant it had to go about two months ago). It was a wonderful car, the best car I've ever owned (yes, better than its Merc C, E Class amd ML predecessors, good as they were). The V8 performance was outstanding and I never felt any regret for not buying the supercharged 'R' model. It was exceptionally comfortable and wafted along like nothing I've ever had before, and with the added enjoyment of being able to lift up its skirts and with its 6.3 seconds to 60mph, leave lesser machines (like BMWs!) in the dust. Rust can be a problem but I bought carefully and maintained well. I'd have another in a heartbeat if and when the world returns to normal.

The 3.0 with the 5 speed auto is pretty damn quick tbh. I'm looking at getting one with just 48k. Keep an eye out for rotting sills and rear subframe as things can get expensive. If you have a good un then zeibart the underside to keep things corrsion free. Expect about 19-26 mpg sometimes more on a good run.

No mention of the J Gate. An automatic box with the facility to go into manual mode. It's all very well if you are hurling it round Brands Hatch it will probably stay in 5 or 6 th however if you are staying within suburban speed limits, the gearbox will want to go into 5or6 and lower the revs to about 1500. This is it being slightly lazy. So for a quicker response flip it across to 4 th. J Gate/ Jaguar Gate. 😅

I love the S-Type. Hated it when it first came out, but time has definitely been very kind to it. - My only grumble is the 2.5L engine featured in this review. - It's just my opinion, but having driven it, it offers the worst of both worlds. It's not fast, and it's not economical. The 2.5 worked fine in the X-type, but the X-type was about 300-400KG lighter. In the S, it just feels sluggish and that's disappointing when you're only getting about 24, or, if you're lucky, 30 MPG. - If you can't get, want, and/or afford the R, My advice is to go for either the 3.0L petrol or the 2.7 diesel. If you can get over the whole diesel thing, the 2.7 engine in this car is absolutely fantastic. A perfect combination of power and economy. Albeit, EGR and DPF faults are a common issue.

@@dcarbs2979 The XF was a little heavier than the S-Type, but I've driven the 2.7 diesel engine in the S, XJ, and XF and think the S got the best out of it. As you rightly say though, early S-type 3.0 manuals are a joy and a damn less worrisome without the Merc ZF auto gearbox.

I'd still like one. In the US we only got the stick shift with a 3.0 six, and truthfully, not enough power for the weight. Would have to be the V8 - the manual rare as hen's teeth over here anyway. Still almost cheap. Dealers advertise high but they never sell for that. As for design, I've always seen at least as much Mark II in this as the 60's S type. The S type veered toward the 420, while the Mark II has a 'lighter' design which I think this (successfully) echos.

OOOH, THANK YOU!!! I just don't know how to take the retro styling. Personally, I do like it because of the tribute to the classic Mark II, but then I hear people criticize it for being stereotypical English....or an American's concept of what England should be like: John Steed in a bowler hat, furled umbrella, cup of tea, etc. Odd, considering it was Englishman Geoff Lawson who designed it....although perhaps he was influenced by work at Vauxhall and his Ford masters? Regardless, it is distinctive, and I do like it. Thanks as usual!!!

PS....I doubt that the pronunciation of "Jag-U-ar" is remotely correct. We've been pronouncing it as the animal name long before this model. I do not pronounce it "Jag-U-ar" as it sounds affected coming from an American, and if you watch a US-market 1980s Jaguar commercial, Jaguar USA was pronouncing it as such. Today, I believe the ads have a British-accented voiceover that uses the British pronunciation. Mine is from the 1980s, so I'll just go with the pronunciation I have always used. That being said, there is a common pronunciation here in the USA which is "Jag-wire".......THAT GRATES MY EARS LIKE FINGERNAILS ON A CHALKBOARD!!!

If that car was registered in Riverhead in Kent it should have a G prefix. ... The L prefix denotes it was registered in London, so I'm not sure if the dealer sticker is genuine or original ?

Another great review Matt, enjoyed it! Still a lovely car, my aunt and uncle had a new S Type 2.7d for a year. Was not reliable sadly...

That Ford / Peugeot diesel lump was know for plenty of problems. Awful engine. The petrols by comparison were very robust 👍

Yes, i can confirm the previous person’s statement. The V6 petrol engines are running out from the world. I had 3.0 v6 and never had mechanical issues. Very reliable with the 6spd zf automatic transmission. I only had electrical problems like sensors and wires.

Great review but the diesel is the PSA 2.7 diesel and from 52 plate onwards, the 4.0 and 5 speed auto gave way to the 4.2 and 6 speed along with the newer dash Great cars. Future classics but watch the sills concealing tin worn on the sills 😓

Another perfect waft wagon I need to try, the styling has really matured over the years. And it has a J Gate Auto Box and none of the little pop up gear lever. Great review as always Matt. Now question is 75 or S Type, what would you have?

I actually prefer the X-Type as far as just looks goes, it looks and awful lot like a Kia of similar vintage, but there's no X-Type that is RWD and comes with a 4.2l V8, so it's not much of a contest.

History will show Geoff Lawson was right first time. The later interior is too high across the dash. The face lift back end and growler in your face is best left to LA plastic surgeons who give people what they think they want. Geoff Lawson was a tragic loss, what a great designer who luckily didn't have to see what they did to his great work. I have the 4.0 Aj28 in Pacific blue with sunroof. Not rusty, everything works,50k MLS 23 years old now. Not for sale.

This Jaguar, along with the equally disastrous Jaguar X-Type, were two of Ford's biggest sales flops, which was a shame, because they were so full of promise. The Jaguar S-Types fitted with the V6 diesels were the best bet, as they had better economy than the fuel-thirsty petrols at around 40 mpg. This, and the equally disastrous 'Mondeo In Drag' X-Type which everybody slated and laughed at, were the straw that broke the camel's back, and were all the ammunition that Ford needed to beat a hasty retreat from the British market, Jaguar was losing Ford a million pounds a month with the other failing brands it had bought i.e. Volvo Aston Martin etc. When the Americans try to reimagine British and foreign car marques with their vision of a cars original origins and traditions, they don't necessarily get it right.
