Fully agree with your point at 13:52 about keeping older cars in good nick and on the road is better than buying a new EV being better for the environment. Trouble is the ULEZ coming to many cities and towns, thus restricting use of older cars. Shame really, because many looked after older cars have a lot of life left in them.

I'm in a position where I could acquire a new car (middle-aged and everything paid off) but I choose to own old cars. At the moment I have a 2008 Mazda that is almost in showroom condition. It only does 26mpg but while it remains reliable the monthly fuel bill is still way cheaper than a loan repayment. The government punish me with extortionate road tax though while my leased car colleagues get away scot free. The government has never liked thinking people who are careful with their money.

I purchased a 2.2d sport 10 years ago for a cheap daily work horse and it’s been nothing but rock solid reliable. As for it being a mondeo in drag. It’s a heavily modified floor plan of the mondeo just like the Mazda 6 and the freelander but the jag has a different wheelbase to a mondeo. Then again it’s no different to V.A.G group cars nowadays so I don’t understand the hate.

Blame that idiot Clarkson. Trouble is that there are loads of other idiots who just copy him.. Every and I mean every automotive organisation shares components across model lines from floor pans to reversing light bulbs and anything in between. He was just part of Thatcher's cult who just wanted to trash the UK car industry because "people didn't want to work in factories any more". They would much rather stack shelves in Asda. Destroying things is so easy when compared to building them.

@@CMS-qo3wz Much maligned, especially the diesels (even in this video he tell us to avoid them) but my 55 plate 2.0d SE is immaculate with just 60K miles. I wanted a manual X Type and one without a DPF so I was lucky. It could do with an extra 20bhp which can be resolved by a retune or chip but I'm happy enough to keep it standard. It has its foibles such as a stupid boot mechanism that has no key slot and mine doesn't have fold down rear seats; the door handles are not 'c' type and can get broken when the doors ice up in winter if you pull too hard. The bollocks about a Mondeo in a dress grates with me, many executive cars have humble proven platforms from other models and the dynamics of the Mondeo are good anyway. Only around 30% of the car is shared with Mondeo, it's just a popular myth to slate it for the commonality.

I like the fact you're open about the purchase price and the spend. As a dealer you have to make a profit and give a warranty etc. Recently purchased a first car for the youngest and the amount dealers that have clearly taken a part ex and done nothing to it is shocking. Garages in Bristol wanting £3.5k for a 2006 Polo with 2 months MOT and a million advisory items, terrible bodywork, high mileage, crap service history and needing money spent on it straight away. Ended up with a 2009 i20 1.2 for £1900 from a part time trader and paint sprayer. I serviced it myself, replaced a CV boot and got tracked, it had 6 months MOT with no advisories. Body work is spot on for the age, loads of history a sensible number of previous owners. Owed us £2200 after doing the jobs on it. Youngest quickly took a huge chunk out of a tyre side wall, reversed into a low wall damaging the back box, then scraped the bumper and wing on the garden wall. But if I didn't intervene he'd have spent £2700 on a 2008 Swift in terrible condition, with 6 weeks MOT and complete f'd brakes all around.

Drove and sold heaps of X Types as a Jag salesman for 8 years. In my experience all versions both petrol & diesel were very reliable. As you say Matt, sill corrosion was a common issue, clunking due to drop links and auto boxes with a mind of their own were also quite common along with the occasional transfer box failure. Like you, much prefer the estate. Best one is the 3.0 (231 bhp) Sport Premium , especially in facelift form from 2008 onwards, which had no chrome, diamond stitch leather, or alcantara in earlier versions, carbon fibre dash trim and lovely 18” 5 spoke Proteus alloys. Although I’m a big auto fan nowadays, the 5 speed manual in the 3.0 was superb and made the car much more responsive and much better fuel economy. Very scarce nowadays but worth it to wait until one pops up. 😊

Loved this video Matt. My first Jaguar was a 2004 X-Type 3.0 AWD SE manual. Awesome car. It's true the X-Type had 22% parts commonality with a Ford Mondeo, but that was no bad thing anyway. The AWD was great for stability on country roads, you didn't have to wait for snow to enjoy the benefit. V6 is creamy although I must say I found the 2.5 litre underpowered: the 3 litre was awesome at 6.6 seconds 0-60 mph. I definitely recommend you try out a 3 litre, Jaguar still made the 3 litre estates after stopping production of the 3 litre saloons. The Queen did run a 3 litre AWD Sovereign estate. Apparently she had previously had an XJ and the centre armrest had a special extension to hold her handbag - that may be where the hand bag story came from. You didn't show it, but the glovebox catch on the X-Type has an extra hook. You can use it to suspend a handbag, or very handy for a takeaway when driving home! Also it looks like your car has the split fold rear seat. Not all Jaguars had that and it's a welcome practical option. Worth a mention in your advert, if the car hasn't already sold! Also looks like it has a CD player in front. That's worth a mention. I wouldn't worry about no Satnav, the Jaguar Satnav from that age would be well out of date anyway. I would just have mounted my phone on a dashboard holder and used Google Maps.

I am totally amazed by how cheap cars are in the UK. I bought a 2006 X-Type 2.2d in South Africa for the equivalent of £4000 a year ago and have spent a further £2000 in repairs to date. About to spend another £500 next week. Hopefully it will be perfect thereafter. It's my 2nd X-Type. Bought the exact same car new back in 2006. You guys are really spoilt 😀

@@robertavadani5946 that’s fair enough, but the question asked was has it got xenon headlights, or has it not as you can’t tell by the shape of the bulb diffuser in the light? If a car left the factory with xenon headlights it was also legally required to have a washing system installed. If it left the factory with halogen lights then there is no legal requirement to have washers. Maybe there was an option to have washers with halogens or maybe the washers automatically came on a certain trim level, who knows? All I do know though is that xenon’s always come with washers from the factory by law

The X-type was essentially the jag equivalent of the 3 series and it has a lot of character, on the exterior at least. The interior dates this car with that wood finish. Would look so much more modern with something like a carbon wrap or a dark paint finish on the wood panels. 90,00'ish miles on a car of that year is a little over 5000 a year which means it was probably the tool of choice for the short drive to the train station for the owner before he bought his copy of the Telegraph and hopped on a train to work. it might also have come out for a leisurely weekend drive once in a while to Lytham St Annes or Matlock or anywhere where you can get a nice afternoon tea Performance wise it matches a 3series onhorse power and top-end but only when you compare it to a 2litre diesel... With petrol now at a pound a pint it's an expensive daily if you are doing 400 a week given that the same 2litre diesel will, on a decent run give you close to 50mpg as opposed to 29mpg for the Jag. Still as a weekender for someone who always fancied having a Jag. I have to say you've given the old girl a new lease of life and you could ignore the reg plate snobs by playing the "British classic motoring icon" card and you'd still be welcomed at your local golf club. You'll have no problem shifting this one Matt. A nice low mileage example like that deserves the TLC you've given it !

I see a lot of X-Types around where I live, bought by people who have to pay for their cars with their own money, so they have to be pretty reliable. The 'Mondeo in drag' was meant to be a put-down, but the X-Type brought Jaguar into a market they had neglected for far too long and I think the styling has faired better over time than the S-Type.
