Safety tips: Leather moccasins are probably not a great choice of footwear around that much molten metal. When things go wrong with that much metal, they go very wrong, very quickly. But the biggest suggestion I can make, is to use a different type of tongs to pour the metal out than the type you use to pull the crucible from the furnace. See KZbinr BigStackD's channel for lots of examples, and even directions on how to build your own on the cheap. Having a separate set of tongs that grabs the crucible from the side will aid you a lot in pouring, especially when you're making the big bar. All that being said, thank you very much for your videos. Once I get some property of my own, refining metals is one of the things I intend to do, though around here it will probably be more copper than anything else.

I started off using 2 barrels and pumping the water over to the other one and rotating them, but swapped to a giant strainer last year. Saves a buttload of time and the metal is practically dry when you remove it. Saves loads of time on smaller runs too.

Great comment Joseph! I was also thinking about that exact point.. my thought dude.. How about 1/16” hole 1/16” thick punch plate. Cut slightly bigger than the top barrel circumference, 1/2” or so (would be best to make a template out of cardboard to test) anyway.. cut a 1/2” hole in the center and a straight cut from the edge of the center. The final shape is slightly coned shaped bolted together at the cut edge with a threaded 1/2 rod for the removal handle. Minds linked ☑️ ✌️PT

If your burner tip is getting too hot, try wrapping the end of it in a layer of the wool. This will work 2 fold: first it will protect the burner tip from becoming damaged and it will also better seal the entry hole resulting in faster heating. Also make sure to not push the burner too far into the furnace. The tip should be flush with the inner wall of the wool. This is something I learned when making my own little furnace. Hope this helps, love your videos. 😁

That's very nice, man! I always enjoy your videos. Pre-Ignition is symptom of air/fuel ratio being off, with those big wide open air ports you require a lot of fuel. Try putting a plug in one side of your tee or adding more fuel and see where the ignition happens. Close to burner tip is too lean. Much like your map gas touches, you lower the fuel and your tip of the touch heats up. If you're having sputtering flame while the lid is on, you're having an exhaust issue. Love the videos. Hope this helpful information.

You’re well on your way man! You should get some pouring tongs. You don’t want your crucible slipping out of those lifting tongs I to the water. As stated in a comment below check out some bigstackd casting videos. Temper the crucibles you draw out any moisture and let them cool completely slowly inside furnace before use. Nice experiment mr Sreetips. However, if you want to use the generated heat (and the consumed gas) to its optimum you should add more powder while the initial batch is starting to melt. That way you can further reduce the time to wait to hit your target weight of molten silver and use even less gas to do the job. Also, you could have your tongs modified slightly so that the bottom end can pivot 90° making the pouring a lot easier for you. It wouldn't be a bad idea, by the way, to wear cotton or woolen fabric around a furnace, since synthetic fabric can melt or burn on your skin with horrible consequences. Wearing a mica or glassfiber "skirt" while pouring wouldn't be a bad idea either. By the way, why don't you use a "heat-gun" thermometer to check the heat of the melt? Either way, it's a commendable effort with great results :) Congratulations

If the lining of your furnace is Kaowool when you heat it up it releases fibers that are very bad for your lungs. Putting some rigidizer on the Kaowool will stop it releasing fibers. Or you can wear a respirator. But effective home build and great it saves you so much time!

Nice work, as suggested already, bigstackd casting is a channel worthy of many great tips. Just a couple of points though. I'm surprised at your lack of safety, considering how well you execute it when refining. I don't think that moccasins are the best footwear when handling molten metals. You will suffer severe burns quicker than you could kick off any spillage. Also, if you loose your hold and drop the crucible into the barrel, you will have a nasty steam explosion, also the crucible could explode showering you with red hot fragments. Stay safe, and keep making great videos.

over all an excellent video. It is great that you preheated your new crucible as they tend to absorb moisture from the air. Some suggestions: The hole in your top is a bit small. maybe bring it open another inch and a half in diameter. I am scared to death that you will get water splashing onto your hot crucible. If you can stand on a stable platform of some kind so you are pouring from a greater height that would take away the possibility that water would reach that hot crucible. Lastly, because we like your content and love you, please rethink your choice of footwear. Most molders wear high top boots and canvas spats to prevent molten metal from contacting their feet.

Nice Video. I don't know how long the lid to your furnace will last, though. That rock wool looks kind of delicate and might not last too long being lifted off and place back on the top of the furnace too many times. You could do with a metal lid of some kind with the rock wool lining the inside of it, (perhaps with a handle and a hinge?), so you can open and close off it much easier. It might also help retain some of the heat, too.

For long runs with your klin is better to use a blower and steel pipe. Use 2 inch pipe for the air and half inch pipe for the propane. Connect with 2 inch to 1/2 " bushing. Use a 2 to 4 ft length of 2 inch pipe for mixing. Then an elbow then another 2 to 4 ft length of 2 inch pipe to completely mix the fuel air mixture. I used a 2 inch gate vale to adjust the air flow rate.
@richardbeee3 жыл бұрын
Now you got the angle right, but mixture is still igniteing in the pipe. Fuel line should be taken off and moved closer. OK, I see what you are talking about. Another idea we did was make the pour barrel shorter, put a crucible "tilter" on top of it and have the water swirl around likea whirlpool. Then place the crucible into the tilter while hot grab the handle of the tilter and pour. We had a broad hook, about 1" that we'd flip over on the crucible to hold it in place while pouring.

I love any metal molten it’s just beautiful man🤩 I would suggest a hard lid and a second layer of insulation and an additional pouring tool for ease of pouring. Definitely make a tight seal around the burner, also a gauge on your feed line, knowing the pressure of the gas will save you time and money. 1 Mpa would be a good pressure for Silver. 1.2 for copper, .6 for brass and .3 for aluminium. These pressures will vary depending how insulated your furnace is. Personally I would just weigh out a couple of hundred grams more than you need for a full bar and just pour bars. You will be able to ascertain very quickly how much you need to add to fill it, or just weigh out an exact amount. The reason I say this is you will get small amounts of the crucible impregnated within each bar. So putting it through your silver sell will get high purity indeed but some level of contamination will be present. That silver cement you have is by far pure enough to smelt as it is. You done well my friend, I been hanging out to see how you went with it all. A good first melt 👏 🇦🇺
@Navschannel39083 жыл бұрын
When you are inquarting gold for refining, do you ever use the cement silver as the silver source, or just the spoons and other silver you're haven't recovered yet. Just seems that the cemented silver would be much easier to weigh for the process. btw... nice sugar scoop.
@sreetips3 жыл бұрын
Using cement silver for inquarting is not recommended. It’s already been dissolved and most of the copper removed so using it would be taking a step backwards in the process. Also, palladium would have a tendency to build up in the cement silver if we used it for inquartation. In my case, because I refine silver also, sterling/925 silver is the best option. But if no silver is available then clean copper or even brass could be used for inquartation

@@sreetips in your opinion does silver plated items have value? So if I get let’s say a tea pot that test positive for silver on the outside and weighs 4oz and costs $2, I feel like it is worth it. If I can get 1oz of silver from it and silver is $20 an ounce then I feel like it isn’t a loss. On the other hand, if I take it home and then file it then test it and it actually is solid silver then it is worth $80. Plus you are the most experienced white smith I know and if you have to file something to know if it is silver then I don’t think the seller has any idea what it is made of. So if someone is selling something that he says is plated silver, I don’t think he really knows what he has. Unless he actually Filed the metal and tested it himself.

Here’s what I do: first, I became convinced that gold and silver are money and they are NOT investments. If you want more paper dollars then you want to invest in paper, not gold and silver, because you wouldn’t invest in money and gold and silver are real money. Paper dollars are a money substitute. Next I convert any dollars that I earn into gold and silver. I don’t want to hold my savings in dollars that can be printed into existence out of thin air. I want my savings in gold, and silver, because those can not be printed into existence. I’m not holding gold and silver for a “big bump” in price. I’m holding them to protect the value and purchasing power of my savings from being plundered by the money printers. If I need some paper to pay bills or buy food then I can always sell a little of my metal. Hope this helps.

Hello Mr. sreetips. it's great to watch them get bigger and bigger. As far as I know, clay / graphite crucibles must also be glazed with borax. only pure graphite crucibles do not have to be glazed. I think after that the problem with the dirt should be gone. All the best for the future
@sreetips3 жыл бұрын
Didn’t think of that. I’ll try a fine graphite crucible for my next pour. Thank you

It might be interesting to examine the outside of the crucible to see if proximity to the input flame affects its strength at the closest points. Also, a second burner might ket you smelt fir longer. You could just swap a second one in while the first cools down.

Good video, seems as though some people have left you some very good suggestions especially on Footwear. I do like the suggestions without watching the the big stack videos oh, that guy melts lots and lots of different Metals pouring them into bars and blocks and Bricks and all kinds of different designs LOL personally I have had to deal with molten metal plenty in my life, I would suggest that you get heat proof gloves, I also noticed on your video that your furnace is a little bit shaky, I would suggest trying to stabilize it just a little better, I would suggest that when you go to melt and pour some of those bigger bars that you weigh out the exact amount that you want the bar to weigh before you put it in the furnace, Looking forward to more videos and the waste bucket refining videos Be smart be safe and have fun

Hi sreetips, You should recharge Your crucible in b/w the melting with cemented silver after 1st melting as it creates space when it melts. It also saved your pouring time in water which has to be performed 1 time instead of 2 times Or 3 times.

That is AWESOME! Can’t wait to see you pour that big bar my friend. I’ve always wanted to build one for so long but I’ve been trying to collect enough 925 to start the cementing process first but I only have maybe a couple ounces of jewelry, even though I’ve been keeping my out for over a year. Even posting on Facebook that I’d buy if anyone has any to buy but every try’s to sell it as a jewelry piece instead of the weight so I’m SOL. All the thrift shops around me are the exact same way. They watch for sterling silver like a hawk on anything that moves through that place so there is no finding anything there that is it even worth it since they charge way passed the weight 🤦🏼♂️😭

Get up early, go to yard sales. Quietly, ask the seller if they have any jewelry items for sale. You might be surprised.

@richardoconnor71623 жыл бұрын
You need a higher lid, there is not enough volume in the furnace causing the flame to back up instead of come up the hole in a chimney effect. Simply cut another layer of wool to go just a bit higher than the chamber walls, the same lid will then work still. You will need to get pouring tongs before you can pour a clean bar, you have to be able to pour it all in a second in to the mold.

You might want one of those horizontal tongs so you can pour more comfortably and safely. it seems that pouring with those vertical tongs is a bit awkward and risky.

Tiny suggestion: don't bother with the newspaper to light the furnace. Just use the torch. Both in part 1 and part 2 the flaming paper has been blown out of the furnace and I worry it could cause damage if it lands on flammable material.

Put a screen basket at the bottom of the stainless barrel, round, almost as large as the barrel. Fashion a handle so you can pull the basket out without dumping all of the water.

I store the barrel indoors. I’ll only use it once or twice per year. It’s my hobby

See about rigging some sort of screen at the midway or bottom of your cooling barrel so you don't have to break your back dumping water and keep refilling. It'll save on your water bill too..lol. Ya do that all you'll have to do is dump your granules in your drying bowl

Hi Sree. Just some info if interested. "Devil Forge" makes some real nice furnaces and not so expensive as some. Different sizes as well. You may have heard of BigStackD. You also may want to get a second tank of propane or a bucket of warm water to set your tank in to keep it from freezing up because the propane is coming out of the tank rapidly expanding makes the tank freeze and lose pressure. I run 3 in my forge and alternate as they freeze.
@sreetips3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t have a problem with that. I had to throttle the flow back to get it to work right. I thought that it would use way more propane than it did. I have a second tank as back up.
@chrish15853 жыл бұрын
If you were running for a few hours, they will freeze up. I'm getting a smaller crucible to use in my forge to melt sterling into bars. I get a bunch from my storage unit buying neighbor who has an anteque shop.
