The motor on my vintage Dometic furnace reversed rotation direction out of the blue. The polarity wasn't reversed. It happened spontaneously. Ordered a new motor from a company in Canada and fixed the problem.

RV tech down in Omaha here. Literally just had a call identical to this but on a SF-Q35. Ultimately I took the old motor case apart and found that it was full of dust from the brushes wearing the armature halfway through. It worked normally most of the time but occasionally would fail to start. Usually at 4am when I was not watching it😂 New motor and a happy customer now. I'd love to see a video of you opening that blower motor and inspecting the guts. Side note, customer is a full-timer and the furnace is 5 years old.

We have the same business model. It’s not the customers fault I don’t know what I am doing! Good video and once I am back at it after my shoulder surgery I have two units waiting and one is like this one. Thanks

Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if you flired the fuse panel to see if the heat dropped on the fuse? I would love to see you do a review of your trailer, as you do with what is in your tool bag.

If you still have the bad motor, do this test. Put the DMM on ohms. Measure the resistance between the 2 motor leads. If the motor has a dead spot, the ohms will go up. The dead spot could be caused by armature wire broke or bad brush contact. Measure a good motor so you know what good brush contact resistance should be. An oscilloscope is a easy way to show if the motor is good or bad if you know how to use one. Good job trouble shooting.

I agree using the ohm meter on the motor leads and rotating the motor very slowly, should find the dead cuntact on the armature. That is the intermittent nature of when it stops on the bad spot, power but no rotation. Mine a (Suburban) is doing it now. I found when it happens if I ago outside and carefully inserting someting small to touch the cage inside the heater air intake tube above the exhaust port, the motor starts up no problem. Next is replacing the motor. Thank you

Might be some gremlins in that RV. I'm guessing you were on shore power? You mention convertor and ripple. Did you test the furnace on battery power?

I retired from the industry quite a few years ago but I do the odd repairs to kill off boredom lol, as well as help out a few folks who are in dire straights. One thing I noticed was when you were testing the voltage at the furnace before removal and after removal and at first it was low below 12 volts then jumped up to where it should be with the converter working (up in the 13.6 volts range). Now after reinstallation it was below 12 volts, that would have me concerned especially since it remained at below 12 volts when your meter was connected and showing it's reading to the camera. Most RV appliances don't work well if at all below the 12 volt range and I would be looking into the battery/converter if I found it below 12.3 volts. Being that low would also cause the cabin lights to fliker/go dim with a heavy amperage draw (furnace motor) if the voltage supply was so low. I'd like to know how things worked out with this call for you, did it solve the issue, and did you also find the voltage supply issue a bit odd as well? Cheers

Hello, Great videos. Havent seen any and wondering if you have any videos or where I can find some on trouble shooting an older furnace. I have a Hydro Flame 2916 furnace that I get a click and a buzz for about 20 seconds and then it blows the breaker. I suspect its the motor or the relay but would love to find a video on what and how to test it before throwing money at it.

You may find that the motor is bad. Check out our furnace playlist. We've got quite a few videos on furnaces. Here's a link on a furnace repair, it's not a hydroflame, but the troubleshooting procedures should help you. But in the playlist there's several more that go into different aspects of troubleshooting the motor including how to swap out the motors. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gHeoi6WpacSnbKs

@@MyRVWorks Thanks for the reply. I've already watched all your furnace videos and did get some ideas how to test it but was hoping there was one for older style like mine. There isnt much on you tube for my style unfortunately. If you want to take a trip to Baltimore to shoot a video on testing one let me know....😁. I'm sure I'm not the only one that could use a good video on it. They arent accessible from the back so I guess i'll be pulling it out to test it.

I still would’ve had the battery load, tested and check the charger output for the ripple Anything more than a quarter volt of ripple is high like to see less than a quarter volt of ripple Still very nice job and video. Keep them coming. Just my thoughts.

Wondering if you could give me some ideas as to why my rv furnace would run like normal, then once it cycles off. It’ll never turn back on until i power cycle the thermostat. Thermostat set to 68, outside temp is less than 68 but above freezing. At this , I do not have make and model #’s. Inside temp have dropped to 54 degrees, but most of the time I notice it between 60-66 degrees. I’m not 100% sure of the cut in-out temps. From what I notice the set temp is the cut out and 2 degrees less than set point is cut in . Some additional info…. Furnace cycles several times before it shut down or possibly lock out . As far as error codes, I don’t know where my display is to verify code. … there have been a few times when the temp dropped 4-5 degrees below set point and the furnace hasn’t started until i lower temp setting then raise it back up. Most times I have to power cycle. Thank you in advance.

Need to determine if the issue is with the thermostat or the furnace. We have a lot of furnace troubleshooting videos in our furnace playlist. You may have an issue with a sticky sail switch but need use a meter to verify the 12 V signal is making it through that switch and to the control board. On one of our most recent videos we demonstrated how to test for this.

@@MyRVWorks thanks for replying. I’ve watched several of your videos. None of which ( so far) has helped with my issue. Im arming myself with information so when my warranty run out in a month or two I can investigate myself. The service people that’s working this for me can’t reduplicate the problem. I do suspect the thermostat at this point. Again thank you very much for responding to my question. I do love your furnace playlist.

@@pqqhpqqh I've developed a diagnostic tool that you connect to the different furnace wires and it will data log all the different signals. The program that I wrote to go with that will diagnosis the furnace signals and shows on a display what the fault is. I've used it several times in the field and it's 100% accurate. It's just kind of big and ugly right now as it's going through its development stages. This tool I will be working on over the next many months to get ready for production. Our idea for this tool is to make it available for rental for situations such as yours (it's not going to be cheap to make or buy. So anybody who wants to buy it can, but we feel a rental for these strange one-off furnace issues would be a better business model). You would rent it, connect it to your furnace, run your furnace and it will tell you all the things that are wrong with it. But give me some time to get it ready for production.

Would it ever be a good idea ? If you never really had a problem with your RV furnace but due to the age of the unit a problem occurs, it would probably be a better choice just to replace the unit instead of repair.
@jeffreyengle2762 Жыл бұрын
In this particular case, you just might replace the whole furnace and still wind up not solving the problem…. Very expensive. Something else you have to consider here is that these furnaces are made up of particular parts that may or may not break down or wear out so that being said you may only have one piece of it that is actually bad if that makes sense, replacing that one piece is a whole lot cheaper than replacing the whole furnace, as for me and the novice that I am, I am learning constantly on these videos and my wife and I being on a somewhat limited income these days I find that it’s important for me to learn as much as I can so that I can take the $150 an hour charge away from the technician and put it in my own pocket. As I am a slow learner, I find that watching these videos over and over. I end up finally getting the information I need.😂
