I think there's a better way to handle the removal of the skirts on old velvet chairs. It involves upholstering but don't be scared. The skirt is most likely two layers of fabric with a stiffener (stiffner?) in between. Cut the skirts about an inch below the bottom of the chair. Remove the stiffener and back layer of fabric if its a thick fabric. Leave it if its a pain and you can get away with leaving it. Turn the skirt under and staple it all around. I would remove and replace the dust cover on top of the (former) skirt staples, but you don't have to. Use hot glue if you need to around the legs. Doing it this way takes care of alot of the problems left behind by simply pulling skirts off. Pulling them off leaves behind staple holes and uneven fading as well as sometimes a permanent indentation in the fabric where the cardboard tack strip had been crushing it for years. I really think you'd get much better results this way and would find it so much easier! It's a very nice way to finish off the bottom of the chair in a way that looks intentional. I hope you'll give it a shot, but whether you do or not, there's no wrong way to keep old furniture out of the landfill. You do great work and I appreciate you sharing your experiences and inspiring others to do the same. Oh, and give your mom the chairs!

Most of those cushions have zippers that allow for taking the cover off. I've had good success with pretreating the spots and tossing them in the washer. Air dry to prevent shrinking and put them back on the cushion. I bet you can get the stains out that way. You have a great mom, give her the chairs.
@donnasalvador678 Жыл бұрын
Watching you remove the chair skirts gave me an idea. Because the last two have those wood planks showing, you could just tuck the skirts under and staple them in place instead of removing them. That would solve the problem of hiding the wood and save lots of time also.

I loved this video Lauren. I have great difficulty finding such wonderful chairs in my area, but I keep looking. One year ago, you flipped two French provincial end tables for one of your customers along with 2 sets of pink chairs. You used Rustoleum white chalk paint and on the top Rustoleum gray. AT any rate, I was out looking today and saw two exact end tables, but they were $25.00 each. They were solid Cherry. I thought about buying them, but since I am just beginning to flip furniture, I decided to try something a little smaller. Thank you for the wonderful videos that you do. Great job on the chairs. So glad to see someone your age willing to put in the work. I know you think the skirts date the chairs but isn't that part of the charm of the "vintage"? If they have nice wood legs under them then getting rid of the skirt is Ok but those ones with the metal swivel mechanisms showing under them might be a turn off for some people. I'd rather see those covered up! Also those cushions that have zippers can usually be machine washed and air dried. If not it still might be easier to do some scrubbing without the cushions in them.

Do you have a fabric steamer? It is a trick of the trade. I worked at a high end furniture manufacture. If a designer came in and said... they love the sofa and don't want to replace the foam... we steamed it. It puffs back up into OG shape. Second tip would be to run your own trim around the base "IF' it shows. Hot glue works to put trim on. Sometimes you can use the tacks that get hammered in as well. I know that is spending more but it also may up the value. (Trims show up at thrift stores.)

Great project. ❤️ I found that swivel or rocker chairs don’t sell as fast as legged chairs. I was told that people with young families regret buying those type of chairs because the children use them as indoor playground equipment. Hey There, Love your show. I use Carbona carpet cleaner for tough stains, it works most of the time for the stains my 12 year old grandson leaves on the fabric of the dining room chairs. It is best to cover the entire surface with the cleaner, if not there could be a color change in the fabric. Hope this helps.

My dad is an upholsterer. I’ve seen many skirts go on. 😂 Funny to see them come off. He did sometimes fold under skirts for clients if they wanted a different look or the skirt was damaged. Gave them some new life. He made feet for the ones that didn’t have nice feet too. So that might be something that you can do with the one with exposed wood. It requires an investment in buying feet and hardware. Remember to dry vacuum all the dust first before steam cleaning. And check for treasure! Sometimes you find more than spare change!😊
@melindainglesby1922 Жыл бұрын
If she puts feet on the pink chairs, they won't be swivel rockers any more. And all of that mechanism would have to be removed, since it's now exposed without the skirt
@tessaend Жыл бұрын
I also suggested trimming and turning the skirts under. It could also be done on the swivel rocker by first attaching a 1×2 frame around the bottom (or whatever size wood it takes to make the bottom of the rest of the chair even with the wooden supports for the rocker mechanism. Some people might think that the metal mechanism is too ugly to be exposed but I find they're really not too noticeable after the old skirt is removed. And if it's noticeable, I bet she could use those painting skills to make it a fun feature.

Get with us pros. I think you've done more than enough of these to qualify. We will put any removed upholstery up inside the thing by disconnecting a little bit of the dust cover, rolling up the fabric and putting it inside. Tack it up in there with a couple of staples along the edge of it somewhere and if someone needs to reuse it, they have it. If you need fabric, look there. If you need to replace that dust cover, the factories use the same fabric as garden fabric. If you buy it in the garden department, it is a lot cheaper and you get a lot. I bought and sold antique furniture for about 40 years and worked for furniture stores as a technician for another 15. I was also a consultant for Lane furniture for a while and a tech for Furniture Brands International, which is brands like Lane, Broyhill, etc.
