I live in Oregon and we have a 10 cent deposit on all soft drinks, beer, individual juice containers, water, etc. We've always had it, but used to be 5 cents. Used to love collecting the bottles and cans and taking them back to the store to get the deposit back when I was a kid. It helps keep the state clean

FYI, white distilled vinegar gets rid of cigarette smell, along with pet odors. I use my carpet/upholstery cleaner to clean main structure, and throw covers in washer on delicate with vinegar first, before regular detergent. Just beware not all covers can be dried in heated dryers, (shrinkage) better to be safe than sorry but just running dryer on air fluff, or line drying.

You need to join estate sales website and start following the estate sales in your area. You could also get to be a companies clean out person that gets everything left after the estate sale is over. You may end up with some trash but the treasures can pay off in the long run.

Not as successful as the last trip, but with the rental... less trips to pick things up the next day. Happy flipping! btw: I think the 5cents was deposit... it dtarted here in Oregon in 1974! Now its 10cents, we're very proud of how litter free our state is.

I would have taken it and used a handle off one of the nite stands as everyone doesn't want two nightstands per space. Gosh Thomasville is good furniture and it looked in pretty darn good shape! Wow

You made the right choice passing on the furniture set. The seller didn't accurately describe the items and seeing you were committed (with a literal rental truck) he should have been open to negotiating.

You might want to consider going to farm auctions. I’ve found lots of cheap furniture at them. Just a thought.

I haven't gone to Goodwill in forever cause they hike their prices for pretty much junk. We have other thrift stores here I frequent more. One called Savers. They give you points and discounts on already discounted items. Doesn't help its 1 mile from my house lol

My suster in law has a very similar set to that set you bought ans she striped it and bleached it and white waxed it and it turned out so good!!! Very European vibes. One of the pieces she uses as an entry table and everyone that comes over asks if she would ever sell that piece cause its just that good!

Yall, in my area the St Vincent de Paul has an actual separate furniture store. Maybe ask your local store if they have something similar. Ours is in a warehouse

It takes great discipline to walk away and not get attached to the "well we drove this far and spent money on a rental so might as well do it" when a deal does not make sense it will not make money got to trust the gut.

I think I’d bought the set you came for “IF” the hardware from the tall boy fit the low one. You could have used hardware from it and set that tall boy aside and done something with it later down the road. Maybe would come across the hardware it needed that you borrowed

Hey! Welcome back to Iowa! Yep can return tax is an incentive to get people to recycle cans and bottles. Unfortunately I think its becoming less common for people to use anymore and I think there's been talk of doing away with it. ANYwayy! Love the thrift vids! Keep up the great work! Yes your 20 cents is worth it too keep the cans out of the landfill. The $ return is an incentive to return and recycle your trash, not make you money or waste your time.

How much did you spend to rent the truck, for gas, food for 2 ect.. you do know that GOODWILL puts the good stuff on line.. I think you could find good stuff on garbage day or yard sales. I have gone around dumpsters where they put funitue beside the dumpster- not in it. Especially around apartments.

It’s not a tax, it’s a bottle deposit. We have a $.05 deposit per bottle/can of soda, water, etc. Then you return them for your deposit back. It’s a recycling thing. Michigan pays $.10 per for their deposit. California has something weird so I don’t know what their deposit is. It always just says CA - cash value on the tops of the cans or on the bottle somewhere. Lots of states have the deposit but majority of them don’t, which is surprising since all those cans and bottles typically end up in the trash. When we lived in NC, there was no deposit and I used to just put them in the recycling bin but then they started charging to recycle so people quit recycling!

The set for was a MUCH better deal. I can't believe that guy wanted 400 for that set! Sadly, thrift stores are getting less quality and higher prices. I live in Wisconsin and it's tough finding cool furniture much less vintate smalls. You might want to start hitting some estate sales too. Oh yeah, paint the dresser set!

I went to a places years ago in Bangkok and Australia that was like Rube’s. You literally walked around a selected your food like a grocery store and cooked it. Never saw one in the US

I would have gotten the Thomasville set anyway and changed the hardware. Bummer Goodwill was bought out by a few company a few years ago and maybe that is why they don’t carry furniture anymore. Maybe demographically there are some stores that don’t get quality furniture and hard to resell.

OR has for years had bottle returns....set a standard for other states. Now we have 10c on cans & water bottles & other drinks. Started with beer bottles at a penny, next came cans for 5c & kept going.

Anymore most thrift stores are more expensive than buying things brand new. They're big rip offs.
