The first thing you need to know about railroad crossings are the things that actually use the railroad which are trains. Trains, on average, can weigh 200 tons and move fast enough to crush your car into scrap metal and turn you into a cannibal's smoothie. The last thing you want to do at a railroad crossing is be on the tracks while the train is coming. The best way to do this is by following the rules. Always slow down when approaching a railroad crossing. Do not park within 50 feet of a railroad crossing unless explicitly stated otherwise by law or by signs. When you stop at a railroad crossing, make sure to be within 15-50 feet of the crossing. Turn down your radio so that you can hear the train screaming at you that it is approaching. Never pass a car that’s going your way at a railroad crossing. Take every railroad crossing seriously. Those rusty tracks could be your funeral if you decide that they look too old to still be in use. Never ignore the crossing guards. I should not have to tell you this, but I have seen many people decide that the guards being down is their sign to go through the crossing as quickly as possible and end up needing a closed casket at their funeral. If the lights are flashing, you need to stop. The only time you can ignore the lights is if you believe them to be malfunctioning and can see a mile in either direction. Don’t cross the rails at night just because you don’t see the train’s lights. Don’t be the idiot who drives through a railroad crossing just because you didn’t see the train, because now some poor soul has to chisel what’s left of you off of the rails. Don’t walk on the rails, as not only is it trespassing but also a death wish. You don’t even get the warning that a train is approaching. No lights, no bells, no crossing guards, and no horn. The only thing you get from walking on the tracks is a Darwin Award. You see the train coming at you at 90 mph, and the next thing you know, you’re a splash of Alizarin Crimson. If your vehicle gets stuck on the rails you should get out of it as quickly as possible and find a blue sign. The blue sign gives you a number that you can call to warn the operator. The long and short of it is that if you don't mess around you won't find out.
